A “fresh” perspective on Reylo

So my friend was visiting this weekend and wanted to see the new Star Wars, with all the buzz that’s been going on. I, of course, was happy to oblige. I was also very interested to hear her thoughts afterwards, as she’s a highly intelligent analytic with a knowledgeable background in the study of human communication, behavior and relationships, as well as narrative direction in storytelling within film and other areas. I really respect her opinion as she’s never been wrong in these matters.

She is also very selective in what she watches/reads, so I was pleased she wanted to give TFA a go. She’s never seen ANY of the previous Star Wars films, but had a general idea of character names/faces that have been in mainstream media. Before the movie started, I gave her a quick general synopsis of the entire series. 

Also keep in mind that I don’t talk about Star Wars with all of my friends, just those who are fellow fans. So she went in with a completely fresh perspective- only based her opinion off of basic human communication.

OK, so the movie was amazing, yet again. I still feel like it’s the first time every time for me. lol But now I was ready to “talk shop”.

In general, she really liked the movie. The plot wasn’t hard to follow, but still kept its interest throughout the film. She was also surprised how entertaining it was, especially because of the humor that was inserted. She liked the different characters, the good and the bad and how everyone interacted. Her favorite was Finn.

Now, the moment of truth. REYLO.

Without ANY context of Star Wars, she gave opinions based purely on body language, interactions and dialogue alone.

My question for her was, “So, romantic relationships… What do you see happening and where is the story headed?”

She went straight into Finn and Poe, saying she found that dynamic the most interesting. She discussed them at great depth, but I won’t get into that for now.(Unless you want me to) But I will say it made me ship them even more. :O She believes the filmmakers are testing the waters to see if this is a relationship they could potentially carry out, considering the current social constraints. It could be possible, they were definitely pushing it.

Furthermore, she thought this was the case for the entire film and said that is typical in a series. The audience is being baited, and the rest of the series often develops around what will haul in the most weight.

So that’s fun to hear! ;)

Next, I asked her, “Anyone else?”

She said it was obvious that Finn would definitely like to pursue something with Rey. He had an immediate attraction to her and that only deepened throughout the film. She also enjoyed Han and Leia’s interactions and was now considering watching the original films.

At this point, I was beginning to feel disheartened because she hadn’t mentioned it. What did she think of Reylo? So I just out right asked her.

“Ok- what about Kylo Ren and Rey???”

“Oh!” she mused, “That was the most obvious thing in the entire movie!”

My heart soared as she laughed, maybe it was my face? “So that’s your favorite pairing?” she asked. I nodded happily, unable to speak as my fangirl senses kicked in.

She went on to say she would’ve talked about them first, but thought it was just too obvious. That’s why she went chasing after Finn and Poe’s dynamic. She found it more interesting. More interesting than Reylo. lol She said Kylo Ren and Rey is where the story is headed. It is being set up, and for EXACTLY the same reasons we shippers already know- the vision, bridal carry, interrogation, the constant “girl” line being dropped, their fight, teacher/student plea and the undeniable body language and dialogue, especially from Kylo.

The most interesting thoughts she shared was that we are being given a classic dynamic of the submissive female and dominant male role of relationships. It is very clear from the beginning of their interractions. But when Rey turns the tables on him during the interrogation scene, they begin to play a game of sorts, going back and forth throughout the rest of the film. She said there is a very sexual energy to all of this that is very suggestive to what their type of relationship will be in the future. We are being set up. The filmmakers were not just testing the waters here, but seeing how far they could push this without giving away too much information in the first movie.

What she found most interesting about their interactions was Kylo’s willingness to expose himself to her, to show her his face. She still expected all other interactions-everything, but NOT this. She said from what we have been shown, it HIGHLY out of his character to do this. She was actually shocked by this. She said there is SOMETHING we are not being shown. There is a REASON for Kylo to do this, but it has yet to be revealed.

She said this reason has nothing to do with Kylo himself, but REY alone. He has a weakness for her, and in time we will be shown what that weakness is.

This relationship will be exposed in some shape or form, but right now it is completely one sided. Rey is confused and doesn’t understand his intentions until he beseeches her to be his student. And even then she is unsure. My friend believes that Kylo will go after her again and attempt to finish what he started, so to speak. She also noted that Rey is currently very clueless and innocent in these matters. We also don’t have enough information yet to guess how Rey might respond. 

Now, she said the only issue in this is Finn. He loves Rey, he cares about her. He really, really loves her and this will definitely pan out. Rey does not share these feelings, but that could change. It is possible and yes, it would be the safe route for the filmmakers to take. She warned me to be prepared for this.

But she also said that Kylo will be absolutely relentless in going after her. He is infatuated by Rey. She said it is most likely we will see Finn and Kylo battle it out once again, but this time it will be for Rey’s affections. They are setting up a classic love triangle between the three characters.

From what we have seen of Rey, she will respond to this angrily and reject both of them while retaining her agency as a strong and independent woman. After some time has passed, she will form a definite relationship with one of these two men.

She thinks we will definitely get Kylo’s redemption, another obvious giveaway. This also annoyed her because she wants him to be a classic villain, because he had a lot of potential for this. She personally doesn’t like the tragic villain trope because it’s been overused too many times to count. But that is exactly what we are getting: a tragic villain who will be forgiven and redeemed.

The main points -

Reylo is canon - in some way or another it’s going to happen.

A big REVEAL for why Kylo took his mask off for Rey.

A love triangle between Kylo, Rey and Finn

Kylo Ren will be redeemed.

So my thoughts??? I’m excited. A little worried about the FinnRey aspect… I think I’d be okay with that if they do play it safe.. but mostly I’d be sad, for myself and Kylo. 

Now, again take into account all of these are my friend’s theory based on body language, dialogue and interaction alone. She has no context of Star Wars let alone how the force works. As we know this all plays an important part.

I just really enjoyed listening to a fresh, untainted perspective on what direction the story is headed.

I’m also interested in fellow Reylo shippers thoughts on these matters!!

A huge thanks to Pantie Oaklie of San Antonio for modeling as Marie Antoinette! Oaklie didn't perform just once but twice and tossed out so many humorous poses, and pretty poetic poses.We are doing cool things in San Antonio!
