i’ve been rewatching this season over the past few days and controversial opinion, it’s actually decent. crazy, i know, just bear with me. the main issue with this season isn’t the material itself, it’s how the material has been presented/developed.
examples:
love triangle to help ismail understand the difference between platonic admiration and romantic infatuation? brilliant. making it last five weeks with little to nothing else in the background? unbearable
sascha being neglected by ismail to highlight their tendency to be a bad friend and connecting this to a toxic friendship where ismail is the victim? big brain. only focusing on it properly seven weeks in? painful
presenting a non-binary main who feels like they have to fit into multiple different boxes to please people around them? never done before in the skamverse. not taking time to continually develop this (even if only in the background) so it would make more sense later on in the season? no words.
ava apology? fucking finally. making it a single sub four minute clip? rage inducing, ava bby u deserve sm better
ismail finally apologising to sascha for all they’ve done to them, recognising that they need to change and making a conscious effort to do so? brilliant self awareness. doing this but neglecting to properly focus on the beautiful black girl who’s gone through the same thing and been hurting for over a year? will piss me off forever
bringing back an old gen non cishet character to help a new gen non cishet character? probably the sexiest idea they had in that writer’s room. not following through with the queer party clip and not coming back to it since episode 6? when they catch these hands-
highlighting the struggle of umut understanding the changing identity of ismail especially when he’s constantly in a toxic masculine environment (football)? so so smart. solving it in one conversation after a sudden character development from ismail? frustrating.
potential childhood friends to lovers between sascha and ismail? bro sign me up. developing it properly at a time where sascha is barely on screen? no one hmu im mourning
my point here is, the writers genuinely had the right idea when developing this season and if you rewatch the season from beginning to now, especially episode seven, you can see it.
these writers have clearly never written for skam before and we’re so used to the format but it’s actually very different to all other forms of tv writing because content has to come out constantly and you have to think of social media and how these characters’ relationships change all the time.
i just dont think they realise how short ten weeks is: in under three months you have to constantly present and develop stories for the main to make the season well rounded and hope the audience feel like they’ve learnt something. but also how long ten weeks is: focusing on one thing (eg the love triangle) is fine, but you have to have something(s) going on in the background too that are being equally developed so your audience doesn’t get bored/tired of constantly seeing specific characters.

IMO the reason why Sascha was allowed to reject Isi’s half assed apology and Ava wasn’t is simply because Ava’s contempt for Isi was a barrier to the Ismail’s story arc (i.e. being able to have Isi and Ava on good terms when Sascha and Ava reconnected).
Tbh when they made Ava be horrendously bullied by the instas, it was to create conflict in Fatou’s season. I don’t think the writers considered the implications of this beyond Ava’s anger at Fatou for pursing Kieu My.
I don’t believe the writers were in anyway trying to meaningfully explore what reconciliation would look like between an ex-bully in their victim. They just needed to get Isi to apologize to Ava and her to accept it as a way to get rid of that plot.

the instas being shocked they were caught after posting everything online might be funny if the show hadn’t already established last season that the teachers check students’ accounts. so now it just feels like a super lazy reason to write them getting caught and for drama to happen, as well as making it seem like the writers didn’t even bother to watch their own show lmao

Hate that Sascha got to be angry with ismail but ava only gets one clip where she barely even gets to be upset. And yeah I'm still talking about that because these writers don't give two shits about any of these characters

okay but i actually loved that david’s cameo wasn’t just for cameo’s sake but it actually drove the plot forward and made sense (surprisingly lmao)

Finally a clip that recognizes the fact that constantpain and Ismail are literally best friends and have been for a while. I’m not invested in their friendship at all but it was getting on my nerves how the writers have been trying to ignore the preexisting dynamics of all of Ismail’s established friendships this season

Isi avoiding a real conversation with Constantin out of fear? We’re all shocked. Will this bite them in the ass later? I’m pretty sure.
They could’ve easily said that they kissed Lou but realized it’s just a friendship between them. But that would mean admitting that they kissed Lou without taking into account that Constantin likes her in the first place and I’m sure they didn’t want this to escalate into a fight. Everyone but Constantin knows now that they kissed though (even if it doesn’t mean anything) and…..that’s just shitty lmao. But it’s also the easiest way out and it’s definitely in line with Isi’s hypocrisy.
So judging the two clips so far, this week is probably a friendship-heavy week. (Maybe Zoe/Kieu My/Isi clip tomorrow with an apology and Zoe’s recap of her conversation with Finn?)
I could also imagine Sascha and Isi talking about this: Isi telling Sascha “Yeah, we kissed, but it doesn’t really matter anyway because we’re just friends” and Sascha is like “but it’s still kind of bad to lie to Constantin, right?” (because he’s the moral compass of this season) and Isi will try to deflect (and maybe lash out?) and say it doesn’t matter and it’ll be really tense between them because of that.

Someone on Twitter pointed out the double standard of Ismail asking who the top is in Kieutou’s relationship yet getting out bent out of shape when Zoe asks something personal pertaining to sex. Sure, we can make excuses and think it’s funny when you do it but when someone does it to you, it’s a fucking crime. L. O. L.
