he hadn’t fed in ... how long was it now ?  the circles were dark under his eyes , matching perfectly with the abyss of his gaze . he thought he’d been preparing himself for this as he came back to her , but it still made his head spin . watching her cheeks swirl with color from her rage had the monster attempting it crawl back to the surface , whispering how easy it’d be to be satiated again . at the same time , the feeling brought immense relief . there was more than just emptiness in his chest again , though elation and shame were rising between his ribs in equal measure . he remained where he was , kneeling by her bed as though seeking penance .  ‘ i know , ’  he replied , velvety voice holding an unusual roughness from lack of use .  ‘ i know i have no right to be here , but ... i couldn’t stay away any longer . ’  his gaze was intense as it lifted to meet hers , forcing himself to move slowly as he stood , lanky form seeming to make the room smaller .  ‘ i ... understand if you are unable to forgive me , but i was hoping you could find some kindness in your heart to hear me out . at the very least , i want to tell you the truth about why i left          and why i felt it was necessary . granted it didn’t take long for even me to think i was stupid for what i did but ... i thought it was the right thing to do at the time . ’  he was rambling , something that wasn’t normal for him . because he feared her rejection no matter how justified it would be .
it was difficult to remember the reasoning behind his decision as the months went by , losing himself more and more to the sorrow that filled his life . he’d never known before her that he’d been so lonely , surrounded by a full coven of mated pairs . but having and then losing his own mate made him aware of how awful his former reality had truly been            leaving him unable to be around his family . while a large part of of him missed them , he couldn’t handle being around their thoughts . a jumbling mass of endless love for their mates and pity for him , that he no longer had his . it was such a thing that a vampire couldn’t survive , and only the fact that she was still drawing breath kept him from ending it all . however , despite all his resolve , he’d been drifting north again . it was like she was a flame and he was a moth , as he was unable to ignore her pull . it was night when he came upon forks again , the situation somewhat surreal . he had no right to be here , yet he effortlessly scaled the side of her house , silently opening her window and slipping into her room . her scent hit him like a truck , fire long dormant licking at his throat . he welcomed it , kneeling next to her bed , blackened gaze trained on her face . he froze when she suddenly awoke , barely managing to quiet her . but he found himself unable to speak , simply staring at her immobile , akin to a marble sculpture .
it was still surreal , the situation she found herself in . it was like she was in a fantasy world , seated upon the soft grass of their clearing , unabashedly studying the impossibly beautiful boy across from her . the slender digits dwarfing hers were cool , making the differences between them unforgettable . she had begun to believe he was a marble statue before he suddenly moved , nearly startling her and causing her heartbeat to pick up a touch . she chuckled softly , voice slightly breathless .  ‘ i’ve forgotten , ’  she admitted , dark gaze dropping , unable to meet his any longer .  ‘ but if i had to guess , probably about this meadow          and you . ’
she’d sensed them the moment they’d hit town , their reputation certainly proceeding them . she’d been following them for quite a while now , unable to resist the scent of winchester blood . thus far , she’d yet to reveal herself , simply stalking the poor boys . what ?  couldn’t fault a girl for wanting to have a good time ; especially with such pretty prey . still , she wasn’t in the mood for a threesome at the moment , and waited in the wings for them to separate          they certainly were attached at the hip . finally , the eldest left the motel , and she appeared on the other side of the impala .  ‘ mmm ... you winchester boys are even more handsome in person . ’  her honeyed voice was deceptively sweet , a complete opposite to the harshness of her being .

weak mortal eyes turned to stare at the newcomer, obviously fascinated by the subtle glow the clung to her skin. ‘ la sangre humana debería hacer un trabajo suficientemente decente. ’ she pointedly avoided the gaze of those around her, near silent hiss slipping past her lips. ‘ nu te mai holba. ’ the words were growled faster than human ears could catch, but her red glare seemed to do the trick. ‘ i have no need for alcohol. ’ still, she perched on one of the available stools, manicured nails tapping impatiently on the bar’s surface. ‘ tu eres maria, si? ’

she nodded . ‘ i know ; you’ve suffered and lived through things i couldn’t even begin to imagine . but why should that mean you can’t enjoy life ? that’s like saying humans should just give up when they reach ninety , saying they’ve lived long enough . there shouldn’t be an expiration date on loving life , elijah . we just have to keep finding reasons to go on . ’ a cautious hand reached out , resting on his elbow and giving it a gentle squeeze . ‘ i can understand to an extent wanting to keep an eye on your brother ; but he’s just as old as you are . it’s not right that you have to essentially be a chaperone to him . why is that your responsibility ? ’
she couldn’t help but sigh , though her expression remained kind . ‘ yes , of course . learning from mistakes and become a better person is important . but not losing yourself in the past is important too , i think . ’ she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear before continuing , dark gaze on his . ‘ the past is too painful to dwell on . why don’t we focus on having a good future instead ? or something cheesy like that , anyway . ’
brown eyes were warm as she offered a gentle smile . ‘ traditions are nice , and i love history as much as the next girl . but couldn’t you also argue that putting too much emphasis on history could make it difficult to move on ? the future’s important too , right ? ’ she paused for a moment before speaking again . ‘ and with a history as long as yours , there has to be a lot of things you’d rather forget . ’
again , the girl found herself at a loss for words . centuries of bitterness and hardship were easy to see in his gaze , making her heart ache for him . dark eyes moved down to study her fingers as she fidgeted with the hem of her shirt . trying to help people was an integral part of who she was , but how could she compete with numerous lifetimes of experience ? ‘ but one worth having ; what if it comes true ? ’ slender fingers tucked a lock of hair behind her ear , gaze lifting to meet his again . ‘ isn’t that all the more reason to think things will end the same way for me ? ’ it wasn’t difficult to imagine history repeating itself yet again rather , it’d be smart to expect the worst . still , a smile softened the lines of her face . ‘ does that mean i should live my life never hoping for better ? ’
ghosts lurked seemingly in every corner of this town , and it was like he could feel their heavy stares digging into his back , no matter where he went , where he tried to hide . but … he’d been unable to resist the draw of her light . he didn’t regret coming back , at least not entirely . it was easy to forget the things in the past that haunted him in her presence , a reprieve perhaps he should feel guilty for taking advantage of . he was almost startled out of his thoughts when she spoke , turning his attention back to her . her words forced him into some self reflection , the graves at their feet providing him a solemn reminder of his own family . hands slipping into his pockets , he shook his head .
‘ … it’s been a while . ’ his voice was soft , as though he were ashamed to make such an admission . ‘ maybe it’s foolish , but a part of me feels like i don’t have a right to visit them , after all i’ve done ; or maybe i think they’ll be disappointed in me . either way , i can’t seem to face even their tombstones anymore . ’
the distress in her eyes and the panicked edge to her voice were like daggers to his heart, and he couldn’t help but reach for her, arms wrapping around her shoulders and pulling her against him. resting his chin on the crown of her head, one of his hands stroking her hair down in what he hoped was a soothing manner. ‘ because there’s no point in crying over split milk, ’ he replied quietly, wondering how in the world he was going to comfort her without completely trivializing how she was feeling. ‘ we can’t focus on past mistakes or slip-ups; all we can do is work on not repeating them. you should be proud of even having the desire to not kill humans - so many of our kind don’t give a damn about killing. ’ he hugged her tighter. ‘ never say that, ’ he stated fiercely, soft growl rumbling in his chest. ‘ we can learn to survive without feeding on people. ’
his expression was calm, though sorrow tinted the planes of his face. he reached down to gently place a hand on the crown of her hair, not even a single hint of judgement on his face. ‘ sometimes it just happens, little one, ’ he responded, deep voice soft. ‘ we’ve all fallen off the wagon a few times. honestly, i’ve lost track of the amount of times it’s happened to me. ’ his hand moved to rest under her chin, tipping her face up. ‘ it’ll be okay. ’
his reaction was pretty mild, all things considered. perhaps he’d become desensitized over the years? he knew he should’ve been concerned about the corpse, that the death should’ve given him pause. but he was used to seeing the end of life, so it didn’t. what was different was her response; he’d never met a vampire that so clearly regretted what they’d done. ‘ clean, ’ he repeated. ‘ don’t want to leave any potential trail a different hunter could follow. ’ the words were said so naturally one might think he was talking about the weather, rather than covering up a murder. said a lot about him, probably. she seemed flighty, making him grateful he was currently blocking her potential exit, though that hadn’t been intentional. ‘ yeah, i do kill monsters. which is why i’m not killin’ you. ’ he paused to let that sink in before continuing. ‘ the rain should do most of the work for us, but the body’s still gotta go. ’
he’d been watching for a few moments before she noticed him, instinctively cloaking himself in the shadows. had she been paying proper attention, he was certain she’d have noticed him right away. he probably shouldn’t have been spying, he’d admit. but he’d needed to know for sure that she didn’t kill with intent; that she would simply lose control. and by the looks of things, she’d been truthful in that claim. most would say a hunter shouldn’t give a shit about that, but he did it mattered to him. intent separated monsters from those with humanity, and determined if he would hunt them or not. he approaching cautiously, not wanting her to turn on him, nor to run. ‘ guess i’ve gotten pretty good at trackin’ you, ’ he responded, deep voice soft. he watched her closely, stopping about ten feet away and getting down on one knee. resting his forearm on his thigh, he leaned towards her. ‘ …we should clean this up. ’

yes , she was used to that now . her normal and safe life was lost to the sands of time , as though it had never existed in the first place . and perhaps it never had ; the thought wandered through the back of her mind as it kicked into high gear , searching for an escape . maybe things like this had been around her the entire time , and she’d simply been unaware . ignorance is bliss , she thought , bizarrely feeling the urge to laugh . even so , her frame , which felt so much smaller than it was when faced with the creature before it , was leaning and pulling away . she felt like a trapped bird , metaphorical wings rustling against the cage she was in . ‘ what could you possibly hope to get from this ? ’ defiance laced the melody of her voice , almost masking the way it quivered . ‘ why would you care about why other people want me ? ’
her heartbeat fluttered anxiously against the cool grip on her wrists , though it was clear she was trying her best to not let her unrest show on her face . such a strange mixture of shyness and unease blooming in her chest was new to her , something she hadn’t experienced before . he had a presence that was nearly suffocating her , one that made him impossible to ignore . she found herself unable to meet his gaze as a result , dark eyes drifting away from his face . ‘ then - then let me go . ’
yes , death seemed to cling to him like a shadow ; did it see him as old friend , or was it simply waiting for its time to take him ? the boy didn’t particularly care either way , ready to go at any time . some might call it morbid , but he preferred deeming it realistic . he didn’t typically draw any attention however , so surprise rose within him when he felt someone’s gaze locked on him . hazel gaze met azure , curls brushing his forehead as his head tilted with inquisitiveness . ‘ no problem , you didn’t offend me . but is there something on my face or what ? ’ the timbre of his voice held a teasing edge to it , making it clear he was the opposite of bothered .
perhaps he was just a coward . why else would he avoid graveyards to the extent he does , if not because he can’t handle facing the reality of his past ? he had no excuse to hide from the things he’d done he wasn’t a child , and should have to live up to his sins . he’d been trying to atone for them for the entirety of life thus far , and would likely continue doing so until he met his end . still , this was nothing to be telling her , especially in this setting , so he kept his thoughts hidden , tucked safely away behind the stormy green of his gaze . he hasn’t even put these swirling thoughts to paper , much less giving them a voice . why would anyone want to hear them , anyway ?
an answering smile tugged at his lips , one of his hands leaving his pocket to accept the flower from her . when was the last time he’d left flowers on a grave ? ‘ thank you , ’ he replied gently , gaze automatically drifting in the direction his family was buried . perhaps it was about time he visited them , but … ‘ we’re here for you , i don’t want you to have to deal with my stuff as well . ’

fate was a cruel mistress . the petrova line seemed to be cursed , and the newest descendant appeared to be no exception . were they perhaps being punished for the sin against nature their progenitor committed ? in the presence of yet another vampire who wanted her because of her blood , she was certainly tempted to believe such an idea . her brow furrowed at his words , scrambled thoughts struggling to come together coherently . ‘ do you mean klaus ? ’ she finally asked , unable to ignore the niggle of curiosity that resided in the back of her mind . was it not normal for a hostage to want an explanation ? strangely , she almost found herself wishing for the mikaelson’s company ; he did not make her nearly as uneasy as her current companion .
the more space he put between them the more her mind cleared and the more she realized just how much trouble she was in . even with that knowledge , she knew better than to try anything . she was incapable of doing anything effective in this world , always having to rely on those stronger than her . she had never thought of being anything other than human , but now she wondered vaguely how different this situation would be if she weren’t so weak . her body shifted , worn boots shuffling quietly against polished floors . her instincts told her to run , but with that heavy gaze resting on her , she felt as though she couldn’t move an inch . no one had inspired such a response in her before , leaving her to wonder again ; what was he ?
he was different from the others she’d been around , that much was clear , even to a little human like her . ‘ i can tell . but … you’re still a vampire , right ? ’ she was hoping the answer was yes , because she doubted she’d be able to handle learning about another species in her current predicament . the light around him lit him up beautifully , and the girl had to acknowledge the irony of such beauty being bestowed upon something so malevolent . such an advantage had surely aided him during his life , while she was anything but amused by it .
was she being invited to touch him ? dark gaze observed the outstretched hand , trepidation spreading through her veins like ice water . the girl didn’t believe him for an instant , a long way from trusting any words that left his lips . still , was she in a position to disobey him ? a dainty hand reached out to his , the girl closing crossing the space between them and resting her fingers on his . ‘ you won’t hurt me , but you won’t let me go , either . is that really any better ? ’

the touch was as icy as expected , matching the aura around her captor perfectly . she found herself wishing this farce of kindness of his would end ; it could make her forget his true intentions , and the fact that he surely couldn’t care less about her as a person .  ‘ what do you want with klaus ?  ’  she wondered , not pausing to consider perhaps she shouldn’t ask questions . for all she knew , he could choose to harm her at any moment , despite the promises he offered . but she had to know , needed answers . hopefully curiosity wouldn’t kill the cat this time …
but there were no answers here , simply words spoken in a riddle . the girl found herself strangely frustrated , feeling as though she were being treated as a child and being brushed aside . she supposed she simply wouldn’t know the truth , assuming answers couldn’t be found anywhere but from the source themselves . her mind flirted with the idea that perhaps it would be better not to know ; if he came even before the originals , and came into being in a different manner … maybe she didn’t want to know . being this close to him again cemented the idea that he was nothing like the creatures she’d met before , leaving her at a loss for words . moments later however , her eyes widened with shock .  ‘ a month ?  ’ panic shot through her , the very concept of that horrifying .  ‘ what if he never shows ?  ’  her voice was annoyingly shrill , even to her , but she couldn’t seem to calm down after such a declaration .
‘ brother . ’  she startled at the sound of a new voice , grip unintentionally tightening around the fingers holding hers secure . she turned , alarmed to find another man standing right behind her .  ‘ what have you brought home that insists on chirping so insistently ?  is it too much to ask for some peace and quiet ?  ’  though he was clearly complaining , his face showed no such emotion , instead remaining completely neutral . they didn’t look very alike , but she realized why it was easy to tell they were related          the air around them was nearly identical . he was also devastatingly handsome , leading her to wonder vaguely how many more of them there were and why they had to be so attractive . she felt no animosity from the newcomer , but she knew better than to think he would help her . two vampires were seldom better than one .
his blank gaze stared down at her , as though she were an experiment under a microscope . in a manner that almost seemed childlike , he tilted his head to the side , a touch of confusion coloring the planes of his face .  ‘ you brought a snack … ?  ’  she bristled at that , finally managing to find her voice .  ‘ n-no one’s snacking on me !  ’  he was slow to blink , as though even that took too much energy . gaze finally lifting from her face , it moved instead to the figure behind her , as though he required a second opinion .  ‘ if not for a snack , then why ?  ’  he asked , yet didn’t seem to truly care , as though someone else had voiced the question . she also turned to eye michael , her frame yet again becoming restless .
