“I don’t. They are Thomas’s friends.” if Thomas was no longer around, she didn’t know how they would react. She really couldn’t tell. She didn’t have any experience in that department, just like he had accused her of not too long ago. It hurt, but… Juliet looked around to the two men and smiled softly. Why was she even afraid? These two were so gentle, so kind, of course they would remain caring about her, they would remain being friends. They had to be the least of her worries, though her insecurities came out. Maybeit was because she was truly terrified of losing Magnum. Truly terrified didn’t even cut it. She was downright panicked.

“Thing is, I always worry about him, no matter what he does.” She cared about him. She cared about him a lot, much more than she could put into words at this very moment. But maybe Danny understood. Or maybe not. She didn’t even understand herself. She just knew she was very, very grateful for Danny to be there for her and her friend. And for his team to do the same. He was probably true. Hip and lung surgery always took a long time, they should get comfortable. Juliet looked aroound again as he offered for Lou or Tani to bethe ones to offer hugs, but as he had pointed out, she had theboys. She had two men, who would probably hold her until Thomas was out of surgery, no matter the outcome and way longer. “I think I have two of those good huggers myself…but yeah, food and drink sounds like what we need and maybe, if I dare ask it, a change of clothes? I think once Rick and TC catch up to the fact that they are still covered in blood, they will need a change desperately.” Any clothing would do, really. She knew they wouldn’t be picky in the slightest.

“Let’s…. sit down with everyone.” As she turned around, she all but froze in her track as it hit her like she hit a brick wall. It was one single feeling and a single realization. She had feelings for Thomas. Shit. Shit, that was unplanned. That was really, really not part of her plan at all. She couldn’t have feelings for Magnum. She reached for Danny’s hand again, turned to have her back turned to Rick and TC. “Danny…what….what if I have feelings for him?”

danny, in many ways, could relate to juliet always worrying about magnum. he was just like that with steve, even more so since steve was prone to doing really dumb and life threatening things, the situation they got themselves in included. though perhaps both him and magnum would have been just fine if there wasn't for junior's downright rookie mistake and blatant disobedience in following orders from everybody who outranked him ------- in that case, everybody. one would think that in a group of former SEALs and marines, there would still be at least some form or hierarchy, even if not on active duty anymore. the detective made a mental note to sit down with junior once the guys would be out of immediate danger and set a thing or two straight with him. though it was a matter for another day. right now magnum and steve would be the main focus, as well as taking care of rick, TC and juliet, who seemed to be very distraught by the whole situation, which he couldn't exactly blame her about.

a short call to lou to see if he could get some clothes for the guys later, and danny gave juliet a small smile.

❝ at least your SEAL doesn't go jump off tunnels onto trucks on a busy highway. and he doesn't really serve you with a heart attack when he calls in he was attacked and there's blood all over the kitchen, but he plays it cool while he sits in the armchair, gun in hand and pretends as if nothing happened at all. ❞ and that barely even scratched the surface. there was the liver transplant, the radiation poisoning, PTS that steve downright refused to acknowledge, though danny knew it was there. there was a substantial list of things that ailed steve, and it was ever growing. maybe this would finally make him realize that he wasn't in his prime anymore ------- neither was danny, while at it --------- or it would be just another thing danny would mentally have to add to the list to rub it under his nose later on. with steve, it could really go both ways, though he did hope for a more positive outcome of the two.

as juliet stopped him on their way to rick and TC, he gave her a confused look that only turned into a soft smile once she revealed what it was all about. ❝ i'll just be that guy and ask if it really took you this long to realize that? ❞ the detective chuckled softly. ❝ that's--- that's really good, actually! there's nothing wrong with that at all. ❞ obviously had had noticed the puppy eyes thomas had for juliet whenever she was talking or just doing things. danny at that point had been convinced that he felt just the same about her, though that was on magnum to say, not him throwing out speculations of his own that might not come true. ❝ are you scared about how it--- it might affect your partnership with him? ❞

He walked passed all these people dressed in black, people crying. Chin and Abby were there with Sarah, Abby holding a newborn. Kono and Adam were careful to stay on other sides of the room. Tani was nestled into Juniors side, her hair shorter than he remembered. Joanie was petting Eddie, who seemed almost depressed. Mary was hugging Lou as he passed. Grace held Will. She cried as she looked outside, through Steve, to the man sitting in his usual chair looking at the beach. 

“I’m sorry I’m never coming home,” he spoked softly as he walked up next to Danny. It was their spot. It was the place they envisioned growing old together. It would never happen. “I guess my luck finally ran out.” He looked back at the house, at all their loved ones. Honestly, he never expected to see so many people. Magnum and friends were there, Kamekona, Duke, a lot of HPD officers, Nahele and his brandnew wife.

he couldn't stay inside. his heart ached too much, tears threatened to fall every so often. even being in the house felt wrong. it wasn't the same. no matter how many people were there, it felt empty, and it felt big, bigger than what he remembered it to be, almost so big that it threatened to swallow him whole. he couldn't stomach the sight of steve's framed image with a black ribbon around a corner, all the flowers, the people who came to say their goodbyes to probably the best man he ever got the chance to meet, the fact that he'd have to sit down with charlie and tell him that uncle steve would never come back home.

for the sake of the good old times, when both were sitting where he was, sipping beer, watching the ocean and bantering, the detective held a bottle of beer in hand, taking a sip from it but ultimately grimacing -------- it felt bitter, it felt wrong drinking the beer at their spot without steve. nothing would be the same without steve, and it would take a really long time to get used to not having him around, if that would even be possible. danny couldn't even describe just how he felt, how much it hurt. a part of him was missing, his other half was missing. but somehow, he was still here.

the voice. it was his voice, steve's. through tears, he gave a small, barely there smile. it was like he was standing right next to him, talking to him. except, that couldn't be. he was dead. steve was dead and he was not coming back.

still, despite thinking that his mind was simply playing tricks on him, he turned around, expecting to see nothing there. except, he was wrong. steve was there. he was there, talking to him. ❝ what the---? ❞ mouth agap, thinking he was going insane, danny quickly stood up, getting caught in the chair in the process and toppling over into the sand. quick in reaction, he turned around, now sitting on the ground, staring wide-eyed in shock at him.

❝ y-y-you---- ❞ words decided to dip it, nothing coherent coming from danny's mouth for a few moments. ❝ you're... here? but you... a-and... ❞ what even was happening? ❝ am i going crazy? is--- is this it? i officially went insane? ❞

“Tani, at times, is very much one herself,” Juliet pointed out with a small smile. She fit right in. TC, Rick and Thomas all basically adopted her into the family and were all protective of her, which was the one reason why they did not cut out Junior as hard as Juliet mentally had. That kid better not show his face around here anytime soon, but according to the boys he had planned to and as Danny just confirmed, he truly had. That in itself made her slightly furious and only ensured that Junior’s mental banishment should remain longer than it had been. 

Juliet was glad for Danny’s presence in all of it. Watching Thomas go about his things as usual straight away gave her more than a little concern. But with TC and Rick around she knew he would be as fine as he could be. They did not want to let anything happen to Thomas. He was as safe as could be with them. Adding to it Steve with his knoweldge of field medicine, who kept him alive in the first place, well he was safe and they were only going out to paddle. What could happen when they were out paddling? Not even a match could with Steve hopefully staying on his knees…which he probably never would.

“The boys mentioned something like that. I hope he is aware that the dangerous one here is me, not them. Me and my lads.” And she would give him a piece of her mind and if he dared to attack her, her lads would be the least of his problems. There was a line he could cross with the boys and one he couldn’t and that was the one in attacking her.

“He behaved. He…. he came in only dressed in a towel the other day and I had a rather strong reaction to seeing the multitude of scars. I think that spooked him a little and encouraged him to take care of himself. So there was no protest.” And there hopefully wouldn’t for the next two weeks. “I take it Steven has been stubborn?”

❝ i take it it's the first time you've ever seen him like that? ❞ the detective asked with a soft smile. it could be very scary, seeing the person you deeply care about sporting a multitude of fresh scars and injuries could be incredibly scary, especially if said person also decided to go against doctor's orders and do things his own way because field medicine was apparently more superior to the opinion of a professional. ❝ i had to learn it the hard way with steve, but you get used to it. at least your idiot SEAL is much more sensible when it comes to that and--- and, you know, he takes how you feel into consideration. with steve... well, he's special. ❞ he went with the line of thought that it was the most natural thing, and for most it was, danny most of all of them. he'd seen steve at his best and his worst, and the situation that played out weeks ago definitely fell into the latter category. danny understood that it spooked juliet, just like it spooked him. it was, after all, rare that steve got this close to dying, and all because of junior.

❝ steve... was something. half stubborn, half willing. he's the type of guy who wants to leave the hospital when he isn't allowed, and stays when he is allowed, and don't get me started on therapy. he wants to do it, but his way. he always knows best. ❞ the detective rolled his eyes a bit at that. ❝ it--- it takes a bit of benching him down every time something like this happens. i moved in with him, pretty much kicked junior out of the house for now. i almost feel bad for--- for having tani take him in for the while, but i think it's for the best. ❞ and he didn't even had the chance to talk to the kid about what happened and what the consequences of his actions were, something that was beyond him how he wasn't able to simply grasp onto it on his own. how did he even get accepted in the navy to begin with? questions upon questions, and danny at that point felt a rising headache just from thinking about it.

his eyes fell on the dogs that were resting in between them, and it had him think. it wasn't a secret that them and magnum weren't exactly getting along, and if juliet perceived junior as a threat, it was sure to say that they would see him as threat as well. 

speaking of the lads. ❝ how are the boys behaving now with thomas out of it? are they still behaving like before or did they take a more protective approach towards him? ❞

i’ll never understand why people shittalk hawaii five-0 seasons 8-10 or the new characters they added. season 8 is literally a rejuvenation and renaissance for the show who had a stalled narrative with chin’s and kono’s storylines.

Juliet was always impressed with how easy Danny could read people. It felt a bit like a superpower that he and Magnum actually shared. She didn’t have a superpower like that. She was a person who could really hold her own, but she lacked in the department of reading others. The way he shifted closer so Katie was always within arms reach, told her that he was very aware of how nervous she was of handing her beloved child over to anyone. Katie herself was unaware of all of that happening, being happy to play with Dannys fingers and getting to know yet another new person in her life. 

“I know you can handle it, but that doesn’t mean you don’t feel bad, you don’t miss him or struggle with healing.” Both Danny and Steve were able to exist without the other, but they had chosen to be each others friend and they were to a certain extent used to the precense of the other. With ten years, of course Steve not being here had its effects, which were perfectly normal. Also normal to Juliet was that Danny was aware of it being a good thing that Steve had left. Juliet felt that way, too. After everything that happened, Hawaii held bad emotions for Steve, triggers, things he needed to work past first. But she was also sure it wouldn’t be forever. He would come home. She was glad that they kept in contact, too. Missing him physically was one thing, but at least he didn’t have to miss him emotionally.

She let him steer into the other direction, her captivity. It was hard talking about it, even just with Thomas, even harder with his best friends and now…Danny. At one point Danny had become a very close confidante to her and so she decided to let it happen.

“I am doing okay at home. I am still having a hard time letting someone else hold her or just putting her down, but everyone is very mindufl of that and helping as muhc as they can. I think Thomas loves that it’s a valid excuse for him to just hold us both at nights. She is having the best time now. She has toys and she gets super excited about new things. I’m less jumpy than initially, but the space we hav enow is still abit disorienting.”

danny was far from okay. he never conveyed that to others, even though he had a sneaky suspicion that adam, tani and lou were slowly catching up to that. he wasn't fine, emotionally or physically. everything hurt, at times to much he felt tears in his eyes, the painkillers only ever helping so much, and there was this emptiness, just a deep void that slowly filled with pain, anger and sadness. he wasn't himself, as much as he tried to mask it and play it smooth. it wasn't even as much of a fact that he was kidnapped, tortured and almost died as was the fact that it all caused his best friend, his brother, to leave the island. it wasn't for good, danny knew that much, though it still left a trace on him --------- on everybody, really.

ten years of deep friendship felt like they were gone now -------- his mind playing that evil trick on him --------- and he missed it all. he missed their arguments in the car, their arguments about food, losing his mind and getting grey hairs whenever steve would get himself in a stupidly dangerous situation. driving his own car felt weird, having a beer by himself felt weird. there were many things danny missed with steve being gone, but most of all, he missed steve, steve as a person, as the one man he could go to with any problem and talk to him about it with the fear of being judged, the one man he'd tell his deepest secrets to, knowing he'd never spill them, the man who embraced him into his family, who learned what chosen family meant, who showed him the true meaning of ohana and allowed him to discover all the beauties hawai'i had to offer.

❝ i... do. ❞ all of it. he struggled with healing, struggled with not having steve there. it hurt to admit, the proud jersey boy he was, but danny also knew that juliet would understand. they had a good communication like that. he, however, wouldn't discuss that now. his focus was on her and her adorable baby, who decided that his fingers and the buttons on his shirt were the most interesting thing in the world. it had the detective smile softly and cuddle katie a bit closer, but still keep her within juliet's reach should she at any point want to have her baby back.

❝ i don't blame you for that. you went through a traumatic experience and---- and were threatened to have her taken away from you. i can imagine you feel overwhelmed, too? ❞ because thomas could be a real handful, though danny had a sneaky suspicion that juliet welcomed that kind of overwhelming. ❝ i think your boys understand that, too, and if you want, you can count on me and the team, too. we'll keep our eyes open and try to catch whoever did this and---- and shut them down. ❞ it was a promise danny had the full intention of keeping, and whoever was the head of all that would have the unpleasant pleasure to meet him. ❝ it's a good thing katie's this small, she'll probably have no memories of what happened. she'll just remember the good things, all the cuddles she got from her mommy and daddy and uncles and aunts. you two made an adorable baby, she's a perfect mix of you both. ❞

“Uh huh.” Tani shook her head. She knew full well just how stubborn Danny could be at times. “Oh so you do like pineapple. Have you ever even tried a slice of Hawaiian pizza?” The brunette couldn’t resist teasing him playfully. She slipped into her tank top then glanced down at her leg. “Hmm? Oh I’m fine.” Her shoulders shrugged as she moved to put on her denim shorts. “What? Don’t give me that look.” A sigh fell from her lips. “It’s no big deal. Casualty of work. Already got checked out by doctor. Nothing broken or torn. I’m fine really.” Being one of the few women working on the team, Tani hated appearing to be weak. It was a trait instilled in her by her late father. Never let them see you sweat. Sure she had a few moments where she did, but for the most part she tried to be strong. “I think the surfing just aggravated it a bit and hey don’t you say it. It’s not your fault. Worth it just to get to spend time with you doing one of my favorite things and it barely hurts anyway.” Tani gave him a reassuring smile.

❝ of course i like pineapple, i'm no animal! i just have a strong opinion that fruit has nothing to do on a pizza! pizza is---- it's sacred and shouldn't be defiled by---- by fruit! ❞ it wasn't just his jersey pride and stubbornness talking, but the italian side of his family, too. there were simply some culinary adventures that danny couldn't stand behind, or even figure out why they existed in the first place, and pineapple on pizza was definitely on top of the list.

❝ look? what look? ❞ ah. it took him a few moments to realize that he was probably sporting the look of utter disapproval, one usually reserved for steve whenever he'd do something stupid or go against doctor's orders. he shook his head as he moved to get dressed himself, still making sure to keep an eye on tani. ❝ you know why i'm giving you that look? because you're stubborn! you're displaying prime symptoms of stevefication ------- no--- no, don't look at me like that, that's an actual phrase now and you're a wonderful example! if you hurt yourself at work, the last thing you have to do is make things worse because---- because i wanted to go surfing! that's not how things work, kiddo! ❞ danny, as much as he wanted to give her a scolding look, couldn't. scolding her, as he learned the hard way with steve, would only want to make her do it even more.

❝ you could have told me, and we'd do something else together! watching tv is a nice option! or just--- just going to kamekona’s for food! it's---- just... please don't turn into a female version of steve. i can't handle another person like that giving me greys and trying to put me in an early grave. ❞

This guy reminded him of tornado season back home, the calm before the storm when the sky darkened and the winds died down. Most times it wasn’t the matter of if but when Mother Nature was finally going to drop that funnel down and all Hell broke loose. He regretted the words the moment he let ‘em slip. The other man had a perfectly rational reason to be upset even if Raylan meant no harm and really, it was an honest mistake of sorts. Still he stayed put with his hands still up, not so much worried about what he’d do so much as provoking a somewhat fair assessment of the situation that he’d find further difficult to dig his way out of. 

Also he kind of reminded Raylan of Art, his chief back in Lexington. Well, more like if Art had a nephew that came from out northeast. Now he was going to have to ask after he got the guy’s name.

“That is entirely fair. I admit this don’t look good on my end,” Raylan replied as he slowly lowered his hand to his back pocket, keeping the other in sight, “but I promise I have no desire to take any of this away or step on any toes.” He withdrew the ID wallet, tossing it over to land on the counter next to the other man. “Raylan Givens, deputy US Marshal. I’m tracking a fugitive, that’s all. Also I just got here yesterday so don’t take it personal that I’m asking…Five-0 an actual agency name or just a catchy name for somethin’ duller soundin’?”

so it was what he had suspected all along: another party getting involved in the case. another party getting involved in a case without them knowing. oh this would be a field day for him, for sure. not like he could do anything about it at this point in time, anyway. the ID tossed his way, the detective reached for it, inspecting it thoroughly to make sure it wasn't forged. the guy was legit, in every way he decided to look at it. a US deputy marshal -------- so from the mainland, a haole, even though he was one to talk, being a haole himself. it explained a lot, too, and obviously danny couldn't truly be angry anymore if the poor sod only arrived the day prior and had no clue how things worked. then again, any US agency five-0 had to deal so far brought nothing but trouble, so one couldn't really blame the detective for reacting the way he did, either.

They were really doing this then, fostering these little twins, committing to them, not just to these babies, but also to each other. And Danny even said it, getting married to ease the entire process along. It made sense. They were not a traditional couple by any stretch. Sure they were a couple, they loved each other, but they were nowhere near traditional, so he felt like getting married to ease the process of welcoming their kids into their lives was just so very typical for their unconventional love, marriage at times. They could still have an actual wedding, a party later, but…a signed piece of paper didn’t change how they felt about each other. 

“In the long run, yes. But all that can be acquired and our savings are more than enough to cover it. For the beginning.” For the very beginning these twins just needed two loving parents, food and safety and that they could easily provide. The bottles and formula had to be priority, though. But more than doable. They could go and get some first thing tomorrow morning.

“These kids need a stable home, with the paperwork being a formality we can handle easily with that, there is one more thing that just speaks for us. We already have a little bond with the twins. They trust us already. We were the first positive contact after they cried for hours. We held them and comforted them through a lot of stuff. I know that counts for a lot. I think we will be allowed to foster them from tomorrow on. It is soon, but it is just fostering for the beginning. Adopting naturally takes longer.”

the detective knew how a bond that tight and strong spoke for more than words could ---------- quite literally so, as the twins were just babies. but the two of them did everything the could to make sure the babies would feel safe and sound, they soothed them, rocked them, cuddled them close to let them know nothing bad would ever happen to them. danny knew it was a heartbreaking sight, two basically newborns being without parents, learning how the system would most likely just separate them without thinking twice. they just had to foster them, adopt them in the long run, offer them the warm and safe home filled with love and security. the fact that danny already had experiences with babies and steve being a natural with kids from the get-go spoke highly for them, too.

danny gave a soft smile, taking a sip from his beer before once more leaning against steve. there was something else they bad to discuss concerning the fostering and adoption, and he wasn't just quite sure how to address it just yet. at a loss for right words, obviously not wanting it to come out a very wrong way, he took another sip, turning words in his head and trying to formulate something that would make sense, but also don't downright scream 'please stop your suicidal stunts at work'. ❝ you know, babe... handling a baby is lots of work. twins especially. ❞ and there it was, the beginning of a long winded speech in which danny williams would try the impossible: bench steve mcgarrett.

❝ taking care of babies is a hard job and it---- it takes a lot of time and patience and you have to be around them all the time. you know that, you took care of joanie, we all did. and---- and iolana and koa are still babies, practically newborns compared to joanie, you know? they can't tell you what they want or---or need, they just cry and coo and you have to figure out what they want! what--- what i want to say here is... we have to be around them all the time. literally all the time. watch over them, feed them, change diapers, cuddle them, play with them. there's no leaving them for a few hours to go solve a case and--- ❞ he stopped himself for a bit, taking a deep breath. ❝ one, if--- if not both, will have to stay at home with them. or we at least take them to work and one stays on desk duty, but what--- what i want to say ------ well, ask ------- is if we could, you know, tone the action down a little bit? ❞
