It's so important that Tessa immediately understands exactly what Will has going on, even if she doesn't get why he's like that. Everything is "infinitely tragic" because he's been isolated in a world of monsters since he was twelve, and everything has to be "infinitely funny" because that's the only way to avoid despair. I'm reminded of a scene in MASH where Hawkeye says "I laugh because it's the only way to open my mouth without screaming," because I really think it applies to Will as well. He finds the darkness amusing because it'll be there anyways, and at least if he laughs then he can feel something other than hopelessness.
