It’s wise to remember, as a creative, that the world around us is truly your canvas.

During a recent photo session this past week, I experienced one of those moments where you take lemons and make lemonade.

With the recent hurricane that swept through Florida, many of my outdoor photo locations—places I’ve frequented for years—suffered unforeseen damage. It was expected, given the sheer magnitude of the storm that tore through Tampa Bay.

But as creatives, when do we let small challenges, like background or location, stop the show? No different than on Broadway, the show must go on.

My client’s mood board was clear: he wanted an image outside the studio, among flowering trees. It was a non-negotiable.

I firmly believe there’s no such thing as coincidence. And wouldn’t you know it, right across the street from my home studio was everything I could have hoped for—a big green plant with pink flowers. Won’t He do it?

So, I grabbed one of the chairs from the studio and got to work. I couldn’t have planned a more convenient opportunity if I tried.

When will we collectively rise to say, “No more”? When will we have the courage to acknowledge that war—no matter the justification given—often serves the interests of a few at the expense of many? I’m not naive enough to believe that conflict can always be avoided. The right to self-defense is fundamental, whether for an individual or a nation. But that right does not extend to the needless taking of lives, the destruction of homes, and the suffering of innocents to serve the ambitions of those who have never known the front lines.

We must ask ourselves: when will we have enough of the bloodshed? When will we refuse to allow warmongers and special interest groups to invoke our names to justify their conquests? The blame rarely falls on the powerful; it’s always the people, the “Americans,” who are left with the blood on their hands while the corporate giants like Lockheed Martin and Boeing profit and escape accountability.

From where I stand, it’s clear that those who are most eager to send a nation into battle are often the ones least likely to suffer the consequences. It’s not their sons and daughters on the front lines; it’s the children of shopkeepers and workers—the ones with the least to gain and the most to lose. And when they return, if they return, they are met with empty gestures and a society eager to move on, leaving them to grapple with the trauma alone. We must ask ourselves: how long will we allow this cycle to continue? When will we demand that our names not be used to justify the unjust?
