i didn’t really need another reason to dislike manuel neuer but he just officially cancelled himself?! he deadass said that özil “found a reason” to retire and the dfb’s current task is to find players who are actually proud to play for germany so they can be successful again

we’re all sad that we won’t get to see özil play for germany anymore but this also speaks to a greater societal problem. the fact that so few people were willing to speak in özil’s defence, the fact that grindel has spent years as an elected official and still represents the dfb, the fact that countless people continue to face discrimination, the fact that their voices get dismissed, the fact that centrists get to pat themselves on the back for not being racist but won’t act against those who are racist, it all speaks to the same problem.
because this isn’t just özil getting attacked by german press, it’s countless people being targeted in countless ways and it’s the way society tolerates it. we need to start doing better.

“Sadly, they are yet to realise that July 22, 2018 marks a defeat that’s much more painful and unsettling for German football than anything that happened in Russia this summer. The most technically gifted player of his generation feels he can no longer represent the white and black colours due to racism. Let that horrific sentence sink in.”
— Raphael Honigstein on Mesut Ozil’s exit from the German National team

all of this being said, i’m so so proud of mesut for speaking up for himself and not letting these people get away with everything just like that. doing what he did today takes a whole lot of courage and bravery and i will support him always

mesut retiring from the gnt because he had to deal with racism, xenophobia and islamophobia is so fucking sad. but if he feels like this is the only solution, i respect him for that. he’s so brave to make this decision and comment on it. he really does deserve a lot better. people will miss him, but they will only realise what they had when it’s gone.

fyi: the ‘say no to racism’ banner doesn’t mean much when those in power are still fucking racist and xenophobic..

“It’s with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of the recent news, I’ll no longer be playing for Germany at International level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect. I used to wear the German shirt with such pride and excitement, but now I don’t. This decision has been extremely difficult to make because I have always given everything for my teammates, the coaching staff and the good people of Germany. But when the high-ranking DFB officials treat me as they did, disrespect my Turkish roots and selfishly turn me into a political propaganda, then enough is enough. That is not why I play football, and I will not sit back and do nothing about it. Racism should never, ever be accepted.” - Mesut Özil
