one of the things i love about young royals is that the s1 tagline being “love or duty” leads you to believe this is going to be like all of the other cliche royal/commoner modern romances where the journey ends with wilhelm realizing he can have both

but then the show is actually an interrogation of how the protagonist cannot maintain his role within the monarchy and have a healthy relationship because no one can be a fully realized individual within a hierarchical colonial institution AND coming into queerness is a stepping stone to the self realization that ultimately frees him AND it is actually the antagonist who gets trapped within the monarchy (while also losing love) proving that upholding the power of the ruling class is a narrative punishment instead of a reward… perfect show

I find the auction scene during the sit in very interesting

On the surface it’s a great bit of tension breaking comedy, but really it’s an excellent example the show’s class commentary.

Simon is disgusted by the whole thing, not because he doesn’t want the rules lifted but because it’s a bunch of privileged snobs role-playing oppression.

The auction proves this.

Instead of behaving like a true unified protest force and sharing the small amount of food and drink equally so that everyone has something. Or prioritising the people with more need - like diabetics for example, they instead set up an auction.

Because in their lives resources are not shared, resources are a product that goes to the person willing to spend the most money.

It’s also interesting that the auction signals the point at which the sit in stops being teens role playing oppression and starts being the Hillerska teens indulging in the peer pressure and underlying threat of sexual violence that has always been there

As a kid, when your parents are poor, you're poor. If they don't have money, that means none of you have money. But if someone's parents are rich, that doesn't necessarily mean the kid is. Everything we learned about August in season 3 does nothing to diminish my distaste for him as a person. If anything, finding out what he went through as a first year only makes what he did 10 times worse because he knows what it felt like to be bullied, pushed around and made to feel small, and yet he did it to Simon and Alexander and even Wille while getting some sick sense of power from it.

August is a piss person. And all the "nice" things he says and does for or in defense of Sara is because it serves what he wants, which is to get her back. We have never once seen him do something selfless or remotely nice that wasn't motivated by self interest or to ease his own guilt.

So no! Your villian origin story means absolutely nothing, and understanding where you came from doesn't excuse your shitty behaviour August.

You dont have to answer it because I am sure i will find out about it in the sequel but i wonder if Eloise tells Pen about what happened would Pen right about this instead of her hanging out with political radicals?

Because this seems like a bigger scandal than hanging out with political radicals. Would Penelope be cruel enough to do this?

A part of me says no because she isn't that cruel but a part of me says that i dont know. Because before s2 i thought that there was no way Penelope was going to write a scandal about Eloise but here she did 🥲.
