y’all are all baby geniuses and I adore you all so my 2 cents are not necessary here but here’s the Official Linguistics Position on Latin-based spells being the only ones Jo bothered with it’s just:
-weak
-boring
-lazy storytelling
-but what else should we expect from Jo?
If magic is a part of Humanity and doing magic requires Language (on whatever level) then there should be Spells in Every Human Language That Was Ever Spoken. That’s just, Duh. That’s just Normal Basic Linguistics. But there’s another question which is, how fundamentally/inextricably linked are the doing of magic and language? Since we have wandless magic, maybe the one isn’t necessary for the other?
[It’s just like how Chomsky woke up one day and was like “oh yeah I figured out how Language works. Mostly like English and German and French that explains everything else right.” And Korean speakers and Nahuatl speakers and Walpiri speakers and Tagalog speakers were like. Oh ….. yeah….. okay……. ( @tygloch: “wow now i just want nahuatl magic”). By the way Chomskystans or Chomsky apologists don’t talk to me about this, I realize this is a broad brush and also unfair but he doesn’t give a fuck what I write about on this stupid blog and I have nothing against him personally he’s a very nice man but he can also be wrong about things but he doesn’t even think what I do is real linguistics so he can fuck off bye]
But more generally linguists always want to be careful of claims about language directly shaping culture because those trains of thought have historically lead us to profoundly racist places (see that stupid ted talk about “yeah the ‘Chinese’ language [whatever language he actually meant by that lol] doesn’t have the same kind of tense marking as English therefore the people of the Chinese culture don’t know how to save money” or something, I don’t remember what that joker said but I’m sure it was bad, disclosure he’s a Chinese dude but his linguistics is wrong; see also the historic “Hopi doesn’t mark tense in the same way as English so they just can’t understand timeliness and shit like us civilized White ppl” which led to the widespread and PROFOUND misunderstanding about the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and why all linguists are scared of talking about language and culture in a direct way now). So I’m all for like killing Latin just because it’s too boring and obvious, but personally I would also not want to automatically be like “old” language is more “powerful”, or magic in X language would be more Y, or have concept/spell Z that other languages-magics don’t have– it gets at best stereotypey and at worst deeply profoundly racist real fast. All of our science tells us that fundamentally, all human languages can do all the same things, it’s just that they all do them in rather different ways….which is IMHO the BEST part of language, the crazy creativity and limitless bananas-ass ways that languages/speakers come up with to express the same ideas!! Like just because a Word doesn’t exist in Language X doesn’t mean X speakers can’t come up with a way (via a single word, or a sentence, or whatever) to express the same concept…. so I want to see THAT reflected in Magic. I want to see multilingual creativity with spells! Spells with codeswitching??? Oh my god???? WHy not! There are more resources to draw on when making up a new spell than Latin you weak fuckers! What have colonized people had to do for centuries any time their language was taken from them?? Be supremely, powerfully, exceptionally creative! oh my god.
Anyway I’m obviously a Wonder Bread-Ass White Bitch and this world is like Magic and so make up whatever rules you and want, make it however you like, including and up to ignoring everything I say (except JO, please stop, actually call me girl we need to chat about this), but I’d be nervous to say that a colonized or otherwise oppressed people have the magic words in their language ‘in their blood’. (It’s obviously different when people of color use that metaphor but yeah I personally don’t need to be saying anything about fundamental differences between White folks and POC based on blood omg). But I would bet that they’d have creative-ass ways of using the colonizer’s magic-language that draw on and acknowledge the culture and language that was taken from them. And then they get sent to Hogwarts or wherever and hear everyone else casting spells and they go “wow how come your spells sound so goofy, mine at home sound like this”, the same spell maybe but just a lil different, unique, as a result of their family and their culture and their people adapting whatever language the colonizers forced them to use in creative, innovative ways that definitely incorporate what was lost, and then maybe it has some kind of additional effect or slightly different flavor than the “standard” version of the spell. SPEAKING of, where are the wizard language revitalizationists working to re-establish the language (and magic) of non-Latin based spell-using groups (what an awful sentence but you know). There’s something REALLY powerful in that metaphor, in thinking about academics and communities engaged in indigenous language revitalization as reawakening old kinds of magic (see, everything that @lizardwinemom has ever written probably).

You know what's a good word? Abject. Deeply horny, deeply pathetic, each because of the other. 10/10, one million words of notes.

I animated a bit from the Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban audio book, narrated by Stephen fry. Just for fun, don’t know if I’ll do any more of these.

Another clip I animated from the Harry Potter audio books for fun.
(Ps. I won’t animate the Jim Dale version. Stop asking. Half the humour comes from all three characters being voiced by a dry toast British man)

I really wanted to animate one of these scenes where Ron and Harry are goofing off, because I think it’s interactions like these that make the books fun.
Ron is my favourite character. And you can tell just from watching my other videos. The movies did my boy so dirty, this is my way of giving him the spotlight for once.

prongsfoot F1 AU where six-time world champion Sirius breaks away from the team owned by the Black family that he has raced in for years, taking the offer of team principal Albus Dumbledore, with his radical and revolutionary non-european-engine powered racecars. he wanted to prove that he could win a WDC without his family's rocketships, which upsets The Family, which is first and foremost A Company. they release a very bland PR statement and gives his seat to his baby brother Regulus, a rookie fresh out of F2 and not as smart or quick as Sirius is on making track decisions, but is aggressive, young, and hungry for approval. Sirius is the only one who sees his brother's promotion for the disownment it was.
on Dumbledore's team he gets paired with fellow british racing prodigy James Potter, whose dad was a respected racing engineer during Dumbledore's era. they became fast friends, bonding over the loneliness of being posh english boys purely bred for racing, knowing nothing of life outside of the car that they are both talented at driving at, lonely but for each other as they travel across the world forever in high stakes stressful competitions.
they pulled off insane team plays for the rest of the season, swapping podium positions left and right until it came time for the last race where they matched points to the tenths.
you hand the one you love all the food in the world, but when he is hungry for the same thing you crave- who bites first?
