To round out 2022, I visited Dia Beacon to face my inner demons with Richard Serra, be enlightened by Dan Flavin and delight as always in the genius of Gerhard Richter. If you understand art history there is no need to fear AI in form of Dall-E2 or Midjourney, because surely after literally thousands of years of artists mastering their skills to render 3D reality in a 2D field or in inanimate materials, the advent of the photograph left many in the arts feeling like it was the end of days just as it can be feeling now. Artists will make the leap now just as they did then. Maybe there is a reason beyond art market manipulation and a fetish for pretty objects that Impressionist Paintings are valued so highly - they bridged the gap to a new art world. My most recent Kitchen Basic: Alignment. As I get wiser, I get clearer about the importance of acting from a place of alignment. It seems to save a ton of time and energy. But I always think of it as right angles and straight lines. I love the brilliance of China’s white paper protest, here being reported on by Reuters. The white paper says everything that needs to be said. And I take the opportunity to suggest that we in The West are increasingly subjected to our own version of control via the daily onslaught of non-art images that permeate our lives. We could do with a more emphatic protest ourselves. I have been saying “Cell phone in hand, we are all artists now.” But I meant the photo and it’s edits. Midjourney App is taking that statement to another level. These are my “works” done while waiting for my daughter to get out of her tonsillectomy. Frankly the App seems to bend heavily towards creepy. The Algo needs a lot of tweaking. I first encountered Lee Bontecou’s work in the lobby of the David H Koch theatre at Lincoln Center when on my way to The Nutcracker. The piece is titled 1964 and was commissioned for the building in 1964. It wasn’t until many years later that I discovered Lee was a woman. Then, I understood better her unique combination of fame and obscurity; power and secrecy; warning and embrace. Bontecou died yesterday at 91.
