I fell asleep in my friends' arms. It was eleven at night, we were tired, curled up in a small pile on my tiny bed. I had my head buried in my roommate's side, and one of my closest friend's hand on my shoulder, steadying me. It was quiet and nothingness and peace and their heartbeats in my ears, my hands in their hair.

We pack four people to that little bed, you know. Laps used as footrests, collarbones as pillows, little lights like moonlight in rustic yellow bathed on their faces. The TV plays an anime. The words are repeated by my dear friend on my shoulder, curled close. My legs are asleep; my roommate may be, too.

The cat curls on top of our criss cross mess of legs and arms and heads on chests to absorb the warmth of us all. She purrs in contented peace. When my roommate and I are left alone in the quiet, she cries, and watches the door for our friends' return.

I will never kiss them but the top of their heads. I will never touch but the warmth of their arms. I will never take more than what's freely given, and in return I put my glasses on the bedside table fashioned from a guitar amp, and when I lean into their sides, I pick up my vulnerability and place it in their capable, tender hands.

I sing for them. I cry for them. I work and I run and I withstand the worst of the world for them, because some days I get to cradle their forehead on my shoulder and some days I get to see their shining eyes.

Maybe to you. But look beyond explanation. I love them. With my heart in my unsteady hands, with my nose pressed to the side of their head, with the buzzing in my feet and the warmth all around Iike the sunset pushing into the window.

Is it enough to say I love them? With no strings attached? With reckless abandon and utter devotion and freedom and kindness and fear?

I cannot explain it any clearer. I love my friends. There is no more to say.

Are you a good driver/pilot (minus the crashing)?

Yep! If it’s got an engine, I can steer it! Hehehe. (I just might have a little trouble with reverse.) I can land my custom planes on a dime since I can read the gear shifts better on them. A lot of vehicles have a little bit of lag in their pedal and gear response time, and that can make the difference between an “Uh Oh. and a “Yippie We Made It!” Plus I installed Auto Pilot so I could take my eyes off the altimeter for a few minutes without worrying about losing altitude.

Do you and the Mallards celebrate April Fools Day?

I don’t. But Gos sure does when she can get away with it. I prefer to visit my folks when that day comes around, hehe.

How was your Valentine’s Day?

It was good! I went out for lunch, and had a date with a gorgeous girl. Hehe. She had a bit too much to drink but I got her cleaned up and purring like a kitten. Once I finished installing the computer update and greasing the squeaky wheel, she was ready to fly.

Has Drake jumped to conclusions less and became more aware of his surroundings since your previous adventure?

That’s what Gosalyn and I are here for. ;)

We’re all pretty alike in that we get lost in our own thoughts sometimes and need someone to bring us back to the present. I will say, Drake’s become much better at stopping and listening to what we say rather than talking over us or adding our words to his thought train and leaping to conclusions. Although sometimes Gos has to bang on a pot like a drum to get his attention.

really love dynamics that are like 'it honestly doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic, the point is that they love each other. the type of love is inconsequential, all that matters is that it's there'. gotta be one of my favorite genders.

Is your friend Drake still selfish most of the time?

“He’s not selfish! A little self serving and shortsighted, I guess, but who wouldn’t be with a beak that- Ahem… What was I saying? Oh right!

Drake is a nice guy when he’s calm. He’s really patient with Gos and the Muddlefoots. I shared the books Prof. Von Drake gave me on how to relax and understand emotions, and I think they’re helping? He doesn’t insult me as much now.

I’m working on establishing my own boundaries so he won’t walk all over me literally and figuratively anymore. I don’t mind him letting off steam and moping. We all need that now and then, but I don’t go around making rude comments on what others eat, how they talk, and what shows and comics they like. Only immature or insecure people do that. Er, don’t tell him I said that, okay? I don’t want him to think I’m annoyed with him. I’m real proud of the progress he’s made. He’s a great dad and a good friend, and I’m happy to stay by his side as his best friend, and sidekick.”

Would you say you’re bad at following cooking instructions? But you do well at cooking over an open fire?

“Yeah. I tend to forget what I read seconds after reading it so I have to keep going back and forth to see the measurements, materials, and steps. It’s easy to get those mixed up and out of order, or to spend so much time reading and running off to the shelf to get something, that what I’m working on boils over or burns. I do better with breakfast stuff and stuff I can stick in the oven once it’s all in one pan. So long as I remember to set a timer and don’t get carried away listening to music, those usually turn out okay, hehe. Although Drake says my taste buds are an acquired taste…

“Campfire cooking is something I learned when I was in the Junior Woodchucks. I, heh, wasn’t very good. But eventually I figured out how to roast a s’more and tell when an egg and pancake are done cooking. Most camp food is easy, too. No recipes or mixing a bunch of ingredients. Less clean up, too.”
