God I am so incredibly enamored with the idea of Dan’s life falling apart while Herbert’s in prison.

Dan turns states evidence in exchange for a plea deal that keeps him out of jail, but he still looses his medical license. And even without a criminal record, the high profile coverage of Herbert’s trial makes it near impossible for him to get any kind of job. He’s forced into taking shitty minimum wage work, and living off what little savings he has. Even years later, his shithead college student coworkers love bringing up that they remember his face from the 6 o’clock news.

Francesca absolutely leaves him—Dan is too consumed by the memories of his time with Herbert, too preoccupied with drowning in self pity to be a committed and present partner. And despite his protestations, he never truly gets over Meg.

Not to mention just, everything involving Dan’s sexuality. With no girlfriend and no… whatever Herbert was to him, Dan would be forced to navigate his sexuality crisis completely alone. He gets to watch as conversations around/media depicting bisexuality becomes more mainstream, but he has no one to talk about it with—as I’m sure the combination of his baggage, notoriety, and ever-advancing middle age would keep him single. On top of that, any attempt to think about his own sexuality would likely prompt a re-examination of what his and Herbert’s relationship actually was. 

(One night, Dan finally decides to bite the bullet and rent some gay porn, and when he hears the 25 year old twink moan “I wanna be your dog” he immediately shuts the tv off and sits silently in the dark for an hour.)

Dan Cain, without even realizing it, waiting for Herbert to come home. After getting over the initial hurt and anger, and then coming to terms with the malaise, slowly beginning to feel a sense of anticipate. Cause like, it’s Herbert, of course he’ll get out of jail eventually. And when he does, Dan knows that the first thing he’ll do is come find him. Herbert’ll either kill him, or bring him back into the fold, and honestly by that point Dan will take either. He’ll beg for either.

So, he sits. In his cheep, disgusting apartment. In the ruins of his life, his hopes and dreams. And he waits.

While I'm active; I've recently let my favorite artists convince me to at last watch Re-Animator and it was amazing. Can't really talk about it irl I'm already forcing a friend to watch TOS, hopefully she's been enjoying it but hum, I took pity on her.

SO, a call for anyone wanting to talk to me about the movies I'm really interested !! And if you have any recommendations for other movies or even books I might enjoy I'm totally here for it

BTW my style is so inconsistent it's a joke atp :'), but I'm really glad of how this little one turned out ! I went in it not expecting much honestly, just doodling and I think it IS because for once I wasn't putting so many expectations on one drawing that it turned out so well. Gotta try creating for the joy of it... maybe

Thinking about how clearly the movie establishes that it’s Meg/Herbert making decisions for Dan. He’s very easily influenced and can be extremely compliant; if he’s left to his own devices he’s impulsive/driven by his immediate wants/emotions more than any rational thought. Hell even at the beginning Dr. Harrod had to remind him there’s nothing else they can do for the patient bc he’s refusing to give up when he should.

Meg is the one that reminds him her father will destroy his scholarship if he finds out they’re sleeping together—once when he tries to get her to stay for round 2, and again when she stops Dan from hitting Herbert (literally the dumbest and most impulsive thing he could do in that situation). Meg is the one stopping Dan from doing something disastrous in his short-sidedness. He looks at her for her answer before he says they can’t stay for drinks/study at the house (also that’s just being a good partner but). He wants to kick Herbert out immediately but Meg again stops him until they get something on him.

Also. Hill said Meg is young and impressionable and that Herbert and Dan are dangerous to her. But really Dan is the one who is impressionable. Meg isn’t weak willed and she didn’t like Herbert from the get-go. But it is interesting how Dan defends Herbert even before knowing about the re-agent, before Herbert had a carrot to dangle in front of him. Dan is the weak link. There are so many times when he should have sided with Meg over Herbert but he gives Herbert the benefit of the doubt, like when Herbert says he tried to save Dr. Gruber.

Herbert and Meg are literally fighting for control/influence over Dan outside of Dean Halsey’s office; Meg is imploring Dan to listen to her, she and Herbert keep placing themselves between the other and Dan to get his attention. And Dan, when pushed and pulled between Meg and Herbert, both with wills stronger than his, sided with Herbert because of the chance to save lives—and we ofc remember him losing the patient in the beginning of the movie.

Herbert uses Dan’s altruism against him when he can’t get him to do what he wants. He pushes back against Herbert yet always submits to his will in the end. Dan has fallen into the ends justify the means mentality just as Herbert. Doesn’t matter what awful shit he has to put up with if Herbert keeps reminding him that they could defeat death, he’ll do it.

Poor Danny you never stood a chance.

Fellas....FELLAS??? Commenting on a shirtless Bruce's beefy physique and referring to Jeff as, "small, even delicate," HELLO??? Living for this guy being completely unapologetic in appreciating their physiques. Very understandable.

And lastly, you can't have a comment from Bruce without him being #1 Dan-hater. Calling him a wimp and then confirming that Dan is totally fucked up in the head. Get his ass, king!
