excuse me for stating the obvious but like. james gunn outright calling superman an immigrant and doubling down on it when he got backlash (because he IS an immigrant, that's the point of superman) + the in-movie dialogue of "aren't you going to read me my rights?" "you're an extraterrestrial, son. you haven't got any rights to read." + the violence of his arrest and how they torture and mistreat him unapologetically, all under the guise of "protecting america", in a film releasing during the onslaught of violent ICE kidnappings and abuse... yeah it's really no wonder right-wing knobheads are crying about this being woke. they're being forced to look directly at the reasons one of the most notorious heroes of all time would not be on their side. and that's only ONE of the reasons this movie covers

There's something so inevitable about Sherlock Holmes. We tell this story, again and again and again, in a thousand different ways. The end was already written before we began, but we began again anyway. We hope that maybe this time the story will be right, that maybe this time they'll get their happy ending. Holmes and Watson are told a hundred different ways, and yet told the same every time. And we begin again anyway.

here's a better plot for the old guard 2. quynh has been dug up by a fishing trawler or something by accident. they free her, not knowing what she is, she kills them all because she's understandably gone insane at the bottom of the ocean drowning for 500 years in pitch darkness. all she remembers is the person who didn't save her, andy. so she goes looking. the one person on earth she wants to murder very badly with an enormous vengeance is now the one immortal who isn't immortal anymore. so the rest of the immortals have to protect andy while quynh goes balls to the wall batshit insane trying to kill her. i'm talking tackling each other off skyscrapers. pushing each other out of airplanes. cutting one of them in half and putting one half on one train and one half on the other so we have to hunt down both halves. canons, losing heads in hedge mazes, etc. immortal action can't die gory shit. meanwhile andy wants them all to get the fuck out of the way and let quynh have her, let her deal with this alone, because she did leave her and she carries the guilt of that.
third act quynh finds booker and takes him hostage because he's not with the others so he's unprotected, forcing andy to come out of her involuntary hidey-hole and come fight her. maybe andy has a scene where she has to fight the others to get away to go meet quynh and they can't touch her because they're worried about hurting her and we get some fun physical gags.
emotional climax is quynh's about to kill andy and andy just....lays back and says go ahead. i deserve it. and of course once quynh sees her like that, vulnerable, she can't kill her, because they did love each other once. if we absolutely HAVE to intro new immortals, expand the universe or whatever, let's have another immortal with a grudge against andy who quynh recruits to her side, because they can't all be nice and get along. for nile we have the pain of watching the woman who taught her how to be an immortal being eaten alive by guilt and trying to sacrifice her own life, and the struggle of trying to convince andy -- who has lived so long -- that there is still a reason to keep going, to not just roll over and let quynh have her. plus she's still the baby so we can have moments of the others still teaching her shit, or her struggling with the nightmarish body horror of dying and coming back and dying and coming back. feeling your bones un-break themselves and your muscle knit back together. the beginning of life, to contrast andy at the end of hers. for booker, we have him with quynh, having to FACE the ugliness of his own actions in the last movie, how he set out to kill his own friends and even if he did it for better reasons he was still just as murderous and jealous as quynh. for joe and nicky maybe some minor angst about watching andy and quynh's messy painful divorce in real time, thinking, if one of us got stuck at the bottom of the ocean for 500 years would we come up wanting to kill the other?? and they can FUCK about it because my version takes full advantage of the R rating.
copley's not here because there's no reason for him to be here. same to tuah why the fuck did we introduce an immortal librarian just so he could not even use his library. if he must stay then they're stashing andy with him while they go out to fight quynh and we think he's just this mild-mannered bespectacled librarian who's the world's most effective hoarder (2300 years, 2.3 million books in his basement) but every time andy tries to leave he breaks out ip man-style martial arts and knocks her on her ass.
okay. long and short of it. don't watch this movie it sucks
#the old guard#I have no desire to watch the movie#I really liked the first one but#I think I'm okay with only knowing about the second movie through gifs
