the Girl of Fire and Thorns
By Rae Carson
Review - contains spoilers
This series has been on my TBR pile for a while. I finally finished the first book of the series.
I was more impressed then I was expecting. The story was engaging and moved along quickly enough to keep me interested, while not being overwhelming.
The story follows a 16 year old girl named Elisa. She is the younger princess in her kingdom. The story opens on the day of her arranged marriage. Elisa is not your typical main female main character. She does not view herself as being beautiful and it’s shown she is actually bigger women. She’s self conscious of her weight. There is more then one time in the story where there is focus put on her weight.
She’s also the barer of the god stone. Not a lot is explained about the god stone. Only how she got it and that it means she has a task she must perform.
The story follows her as she travels to her new home, as she experiences loss, is kidnapped and learns of a hidden truths.
Through her journey she finds confidence in herself and becomes a hero.
Over all it was very engaging story. The ending leaves you satisfied, while still makes you want the next book.
Over all I liked Elisa. She is a 16 year old and many times it shows. She still views the world more around herself then others, although that does shift. She can be indecisive, which can be frustrating, but fits with her young age. She feels worthless at the start, and slowly starts to see her strength and her worth. I look forward to seeing how she continues to grow in the next book.

Review - spoiler free
This being a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was delighted to find that I very much enjoyed this book.
The story follows a young girl who’s main goal is to protect and care for her sister. The story is full of sadness and then joy. A mystery to be solved. Danger to out main character, her family, and others. Best of all magic!
The author did a great job expressing the thoughts, feelings and fears of our main character. While our main character does have her flaws, they make sense for her age and her life experiences. It is those experiences that have molded her into a strong independent female character that you can’t help but love. She is jaded by the world. Feels no one does anything for nothing. She has to learn trust of others and it turns out she is more giving and and helpful to others then she may realize. The story is easy to get into and hard to put down. A nice easy quick read. The story may be aimed at a young adult audience, but is also good for adults. While there is a love interest in the story it is not the main focus and it makes it feel more authentic.
Story does contain depictions of mental heath, addiction, poverty, slavery, and cruelty.

I am an avid reader. Reading brings joy into my life.
In any given day I can meet new people, visit new places, and experience new adventure.
As a child I was diagnosed with ADHD and Dyslexia. I was told I would never really read or have a quality of life. Well I decided that wasn’t good enough.
It took me longer to learn to read with proficiency. I still struggle to read anything that I don’t find interesting, such as a text book. Give me a good book though and I can be lost in that world.
I particularly love fantasy based books, and dystopian books, I also find young adult books enjoyable. More new adult then young adult though. Some favourites for me include Harry Potter, Hunger Games, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and From Blood and Ash. I want to share my joy of reading with others who love to read. i also hope to inspire others with learning disabilities of any type to not be afraid to pick up a book. To learn to love reading as I have and find the freedom and adventure they bring. To know that others who have learning Disabilities also love to read.
I want them to know they are smart enough. They are good enough. That they really can do anything that anyone else can do.
I would also love to meet others who have struggled with the same things I have and found that they in fact love and excel at things they were told they couldn’t.
