Ok since like we're talking about BBC era awfulness and we've talked before about the vlogger era but I think this is worth reiterating

I think part of the reasons new fans don't get that phannies of the time aren't super to blame for how bad dan and phil had it in the closet is because they don't understand that the era was a HUGE cultural shift

Like, if you think there's a divide between "celebrity" and "influencer" now, I promise it was way more stark back then.

We didn't HAVE influencers for a long time. So when we started to "get" them, it was usually normal-ass people trying to have a normal-ass time on the internet. There was no precedent for someone having their normal life exposed to that many people. So we were all kind of figuring it out as we went.

Especially within vlogging culture, there was a HUGE expectation that you share as much of yourself online as possible. Cameras everywhere, literal DAILY vlogs of your literal actual life, zero expectation of privacy.

So every time dan and phil were at a youtube event or hanging out with youtubers, they had to anticipate their every move ending up online and being used for views. And that's got to be HELLISH when you're in the closet

And what phannies were doing in reaction, blowing things out of proportion? Also super normal at the time. We didn't have precedent for HOW to be an audience of this type of everything-exposed creator, when the norm before was celebrity-with-paparizzi or normal-ass-person and no in-between. We were still figuring out things like boundaries while dnp were figuring out how to not doxx yourself with open blinds or how to have a lunch with a youtube friend and not have everyone know about it.

So when older phannies are saying not to worried about phannie behavior of the past and not to worry about your behavior now, we're saying that it was a weird time for everyone and that we were all learning. Dan and Phil have made it super clear that they forgive us for that, and the "insane" ways we act now are within the bounds of the newer contract of expectations we have now. We're saying that that was a unique period of time and we've all grown to operate with better understanding.

its probably bc its youtubes 20th anniversary (i still cant get over how the sites been around for so long) but they just started doing a "lifetime achievement award" for classic youtubers (smosh got it, tyler oakley, hank green, etc) and vidcon posted that on their tiktok account and a bunch of comments were saying dnp should get it next year soooooooooo i think we have something to look forward to this time next year 👀👀👀👀

see i wonder if it's based on their vidcon attendance because all of those people were at the first vidcon (and dnp weren't) also they haven't been in 6 (dan) and 5 (phil) years now so i wonder if they'd have to uhhhh promise to show up to get the honor

Ya know I saw the posts like "asdfggjjkl they CROSSED SCREENS" before I saw the video and tbh. That's not intimacy. That's 200% Dan being do committed to the "Dan on the left Phil on the right" consistency that they have to swap screens for it to record correctly
