honestly this is a conversation that no one even cares about because it would require introspection for why fans act in the way they do. i’ll tell you rn that it’s not just twitter. now, it’s 100% worse there (easier to find, more out of control, public, explosive, malicious), but this is a phenomenon that exists on here too, and other social media platforms. this got long #SorryInAdvance so under the cut i’ll expand on my thoughts and the discussion of ‘queerbaiting’ simply because being on 911-related social media as someone who is not that angry has been so tiring.

this whole queerbaiting conversation is complicated, because it hinges on the endgame entirely. if they don’t follow through by the series finale, i’d say it’s true that the show itself is queerbaiting, but the show is simply not over yet. a ship not going canon in a season finale is not queerbaiting. it’s a story being told in a very slow manner. why is 8x18 the endpoint of queerbaiting? when, let’s be real, this fandom tunes in EVERY week before EVERY episode by saying, “eddie will be gay today,” and “buddie canon today”. those statements exist on a scale of truth to joke but somehow everyone was assuming and expecting it in 8x18 when narratively there were pieces missing. yeah, they could’ve done a little more for them in the episode, sure. but it is true that pieces are still missing. and let me just also say that in the episode, buck & eddie got more screen-time as a duo than any other canon ship. what does that indicate for their future as a pair in s9, really?

additionally, pinning this queerbaiting conversation on the actors lacks the nuance that comes with this situation, and also strips them of their own opinions. intentionality is so important in this regard. like, how is speaking positively about the ship they’re in count as queerbaiting?! he’s made it clear for years that he doesn’t know if the show will go there but he still likes it. it’s not something he’s hidden or shy about. and i’m sorry but reflectively saying, “yeah, that was super gay,” about a scene that aired in november 2019 is not queerbaiting, because it promises nothing about the future of the show and removes all the additional context of: the writer didn’t write it like that but i see how it comes across that way. this press cycle also came along with a lot of caveats: “i don’t know where the show is going + only if tim wants to go in that direction narratively + i don’t write the show, i just work here”. god forbid a guy make it clear He Likes And Supports The Ship. and generally people love this but now they’re claiming to hate it. also. why on earth are we doing this when he is our ally. flooding his comment section with hate and tarnishing his reputation with queerbaiting accusations… likewise, a joke stating, “now you're my love interest,” isn't queerbaiting either, when THEY ARE LITERALLY NARRATIVELY STRUCTURED AS LOVE INTERESTS. we talk about this constantly, how buddie is the unofficial fourth couple on the show. how is that wrong to state. “we're the most coupled uncouple.” yes, because they are lol. and let me just say that i really don't care what you do or don’t believe about this guy’s personal life or his intentions but there is a RAMPANT level of homophobia and racism directed at him in public spaces which is so malicious and disgusting that it makes me uncomfortable to witness. when will people learn that someone being controversial does not mean you’re suddenly granted a free pass to call them the f-slur or threaten them with horrendous shit. especially when that person has spoken about their mental health. the sheer lack of human decency here is really astounding.

circling back to your ask. believe what you want about why this unfolded the way it did but the answer is simply double standards and overcorrection. and this is consistent when it comes to blame of defence of characters in this ship, and it totally applies to the actors as well. people see intense hating on one of them, then counteract it with hating on the other. the lines blur. it’s like… observational character bleed? people feel protective of their favourite characters and it spills onto the actors who play them. this is simply how it is unfortunately. very exhausting to witness, though, and complete parasocialism, just—not positive parasociality, but negative. which is definitely a thing too. i would honestly say the villainization of them is just as bad as the blind defence and dickriding. these two are truly Just Some Guys, and sometimes those guys are a little weird about each other and their ship. everyone feeds off of rumours without critical thinking, or takes their own assumptions as fact… and whacking one of them just because you’re mad the other one is getting whacked so you think sure i’ll whack 'em both for equilibrium. is fucking stupid. point-blank. the lashings to begin with are stupid. so counteracting it with additional whacking is irrational and comes across as immature, counterproductive and bitter, fyi. especially when they both have gotten shit this week for statements like, “if they go there, i want it to be built naturally, i don’t want it to be fanservice” and “their relationship is fine as is, they’re brothers”. like, you hate both clearly so can they really win here? unless they stop talking entirely? which i don’t find realistic, or even want; they are contractually obligated to promote this show. maybe YOU (general you, directed at the fans that take it too far, not the anon) should stop tapping into the supplementary content of their interviews if you cannot manage being reasonable or rational about their responses.

i will end this rant by saying i have my critiques and qualms with eddie’s storyline and s8 in general but the finale itself was not bad; it was simply a little underwhelming in parts and i didn’t love some of the writing decisions. but it was not bad, to me. and i get that’s my opinion #MyOpinion and you’re fully entitled to your own. but this is how i feel. blame the show and the writers if you really believe you’re being queerbaited—which btw you cannot even say definitively until the show wraps. but leave the actors that work there out of it until they start promising things themselves, which they never have.
