Public Speaking in debates
I got an anon some time ago asking about tips for public speaking in a debate. It was in Spanish so I answered back in Spanish and now I think it may be also useful for some of you who can't understand Spanish, so here it goes in English:
There are many ways of avoiding that your nervousness affects your presentation or your public speech. The first way is that you have to be steeped in your topic and confident about what you are going to say. If you have worked your arguments and you can reply correctly to any question, you don't need to worry. If that is not the case, you should get somebody to prepare a simulation of the situation and that person has to attack your arguments until you are outside of your comfort zone and you have to think about new answers. If your brain gets used to look for answers quickly it won't collapse during the real situation.
If apart from debating you also have to give a public speech, prepare flashcards with key concepts or even very important lines but avoid reading the whole speech. It is better to explain yourself using your own words than presenting a complex and rhetorically embellished artificial product. If people understand you, you get a point.
Don't think the debate is a personal attack. They can criticize your argument, and that is great because it means it has been interesting enough to be counterargumented. It is not a face to face, a you vs. the rest; it is a group of people that have gathered together to find a solution. You work with them, next to them, not against them. My technique is thinking they are my mates instead of imaging them on their underwear which is very confusing and does not help you focus.
Go there feeling confident also physically. When I went to a simulacrum of an international meeting in which I had to represent Iraq, I wore a suit, heels, my hair up and makeup. It was not designed to impress anybody but to get into my character completely. You don't need to transform, just get the right attitude.
Bring a bottle of water with you and drink when needed. If your mouth dries it will send a signal to your brain which says “hey I am nervous as F***, can you make the rest of the body run so we save our soul?”. If your mouth is moist you won't feel that nervous. If your hands shake, grab a pen, don't ever grab a sheet of paper because it shakes, makes noises and crumples and it will make you and the rest of the room nervous.
Last but not least, think you all are nervous and it is ok if it is not as perfect as you wanted it to be. My mum always says “nothing is that important” and that is true, you have to make the effort, do it the best you can, be a lion out there, but don't get obsessed. You have been trained for this, soldier, you can do this and a lot more.

Dear flu,
Yes, you make me hot. You have me on my underwear and in bed all day long. I mean, we have a very intimate relationship at the moment but this has to stop. I think you are starting to understand our differences now that you have seen me flirting with antibiotics, I am sorry if I hurt your feelings but I am not good for you and you are not what I had planned. I wanted to go to class every day as always, take my notes, upload stuff on tumblr and make homework but instead I have to spend entire days just with you and this is exhausting. I am sorry, this is over.  Querida gripe:

I have drawn a calendar from next monday up to the last day of the academic year so I can visualize the amount of time I have ahead and to organise better. It is in front of my bed so as soon as I wake up or go to sleep I can revise my plans for the week. I will post some more pictures as soon as I fill it up with tasks to do!

I love this new course I am taking. It is related to Asian literature and thought and it is absolutely fascinating, I have fireworks on my eyes when the lesson is over. If you are not very aware of Taoism or Kotodama, you should definitely google it.

-http://mmariaespinos.tumblr.com/
http://jazzpiano-and-stuff.tumblr.com/

Do you know the feeling when you had to read a text for that day's lesson and the professor divides the class into groups to debate about the text and you are the only one in the group that has done the redings? So you have to present in front of the class "your group's thoughts", defend your group position and even tell the other members what to say? If you do, clap your hands. *clap clap clap*

Hi! I just wanted to ask how do you study chinese? I study chinese myself and I'm fluent in speaking however I cannot find a decent way to learn new vocab, write and read. It would be amazing if you could help, thank you!
Hi there :) I have different ways to learn Chinese and I think that what I do worse is actually speaking so I am happy that you are doing great at it. I am going to tell you my method, the one that I have found efficient after a lot of trial and error, but if it does not work for you, tell me and I will try to make something up ;)-In order to study vocabulary I usually write the word a lot of times until my hand knows how to write it without thinking how to do it. When I am sure I know it by heart, I make a flashcard in which the character is on one side and the pinyin and meaning on the other side. Some time ago I used different paper colours to mark if it was a verb, an adverb, etc. Once I finish this process I mix all the flashcards together and I spread them on the table or the floor and try to get all of them saying aloud the part that is not visible or writting the character on a piece of paper, if I get it right I put the flashcard back on the box where I keep them, if not I return it to the floor and try with another one. I carry the box with the flashcards almost everywhere to revise in the metro or train.
Get a Weibo account. You will learn a lot of nowaday’s vocabulary and neologisms. Even if you don’t post at all, it is worth it.
I also write the characters on post-its and stick them to the object it refers to. I am not good at making lists of vocabulary related by meaning because I tend to mix them all up, so no “list of tools” for me, I would rather make a mnemonic list such as “yellow, river, rice, dam, Japanese, war” in that way I would not mix “yellow” with “red” and I could recall the whole string if I need the words. I have another very geeky way of studying vocabulary, it is by the rhythm the word makes when it is being written. Ok, get a pencil and a paper and put your ear close to the paper. Now, slowly write down 高. See? it has an special sound if you make all the strikes correctly. If you miss any the sound would be different. I know this sounds odd but, well, you asked me what works for me and I had to tell you haha. And the last way which works pretty well to me is downloading an HSK app on the mobile phone. It is for free and you learn by playing. I am quite competitive when I play so obviously I always want to win. Therefore,I force myself to memorise vocab. (X )This is the first level but there are many more.
I will make another post dealing with reading (which would have something else dealing with vocabulary) and writing but I want to do it properly so hopefully it will be posted by Wednesday. Thank you so much for asking and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any doubts or you want to laugh at me because I listen to my handwriting ;)

Once you get this you have to say 5 things you like about yourself publicly then send this to your 10 favorite followers. (non-negotiable) (positivity is cool)
1) I like the fact that I can focus under the worst circumstances. I can study for a final exam even if I am heartbroken.
2) I like my thighs. I don’t have a thigh gap and they aren’t even slim or pretty. But they are resilent and fast. I can run for hours and they are still working perfectly and asking for more.
3) I like that it is very easy to make me happy. I laugh easily, I smile to everybody, I get excited and enthusiasted about tiny and simple things.
4) I like the fact that I can read very fast and understand the meaning.
5) I like about myself that I have sensitivity about art. I can cry in front of a painting, I can stand in front of a sculpture until my back hurts, I can get obsessed about a poem, I can feel my soul free from my body if I find a song that moves me.
