The Biography as an art-form has developed comparatively recently. For classical times we have the Lives of the Caesars, by Suetonius, and Plutarch’s Lives, short accounts, written in pairs, comparing and contrasting a famous Greek and a famous Roman; but modern Biography has no really close resemblance to these or to such odd notes and gossip as one finds in the Brief Lives of the seventeenth-century antiquarian, John Aubrey.

The Babus of Nayanjore is a typical short story written by Rabindra Nath Tagore. Tagore reveals his sensitive insight into the thoughts and feelings of human beings particularly the helpless and the neglected. He looks at life from a humanist’s point of view, and therefore the humour in his stories has often an undercurrent of pathos. Kailash Babu, the protagonist of the story in one of the last relies of the Babus of Nayanjore who were famous in all Bengal for their princely extravagance. He was next only to the Maharaja of Burdwan. It is his extravagance habit which causes his downfall. In order to maintain his false glory. Kailash Babu liquidates all his property. He has no practical sense and sagacity. He depends upon public credit for maintaining his princely pomp and show.
