The Unchangeable Past
It is undeniable that every single moment, whether terrible or enjoyable, is crucial in shaping our final end.
“I still can’t believe this, all of these things.” I buried my head in my hands with tears streaming down. “She is my best friend I ever have for these twenty years…” My body couldn’t help to tremble. Blood was pumping through my veins and my heart seemed to stop at this moment. “If only I could notice her psychological problem in time and help her go through this difficulty, she may won’t commit suicide.” Again, I cried out aloud with my choked voice. “I’m also heartbroken for my dear Lizzie. She has always been under so much pressure since the car accident. The disability on her leg has brought great trouble in our life, but she has always borne it herself without any compliant. She’s a great girl but I lost her.” John kept wiping his red eyes with those wrinkled napkin. “Your wedding…I’m so sorry…You both could have had a sweet married life, but Lizzie…” “Yeah…” He may could not continue to say anything and another sobbing followed.
After the funeral, I went back home, the sense of grief and loss wrapping me up. Holding the photo of us spending our time joyfully near the beach, her genuine smile and the glittering sunshine over her reminded me of our past carefree life, making me burst out crying again. At this time, the light grew increasingly gloomy, accompanied by a buzzing sound before it finally went out. I wiped my tears to make my sight more clearly and tried to turn on the light switch again but nothing worked. “Oh, my!” I slipped down against the wall and hugged myself. Exhausted and unconscious, I slept on the floor in my living room.
The next day, my eyes were in severe pain and nearly could not open them because of the swollen eyelids. I struggled to get to my feet and looked at the clock. It was ten o’clock. Suddenly, my phone rang up and it was my colleague. “What’s wrong, Betty?” I asked with a hoarse voice. “What’s wrong?! You are late, you know? It’s already ten o’clock! Do you sleep over? It doesn’t like what you will do.” “Wai-wai-wait, What’s the hell of this?” I complained and suddenly glanced at the calendar hung on the wall. “Wait, what day is today?” “You must be insane. It’s Friday, 7th of June, of course. Come over at once! If you are found out by our boss, you are going to be fired…” I dropped my phone. “7th of June…” I murmured. “The day of Lizzie’s death…am I…am I time-traveling?” If I really have a time-traveling, I have to find Lizzie to stop her. I don’t have time to figure out what on earth is going on. All kinds of thoughts swarmed into my head, but converged into one clue——finding Lizzie and saving her. Without thinking twice, I dashed out of my house.
I came to the front door of Lizzie and her fiancé, John’s house. After several knocks, finally, the door was open and a pointed and pale face with red swollen eyes showed up. I staggered back, feeling as if I'd been hit by a bolt of lightning. “Still late?” I forced back my tears and charged into the house. Lizzie was leaning against the back of the chair in the living room, like a puppet without any vitality.
……
Her dangling arms, ghostly pale face, dry tear tacks and an empty bowl near her right hand were all composed of my terrible dream. I woke up with a start and got up from bed. June 12th, the calendar clearly showed the date. “Maybe it was just a bad dream. I have never been to the past.” Still, I still felt a stabbing pain on my head, especially the image of the empty bowl. “Shocking news!” It was a message from my little niece. Unlocking my phone, I darted all the message. “Aunt, I found John was dating with other woman…” A feeling of betrayed, rage, resent and disgust strangled my throat, making me even could not breathe. “The bowl?” It occurred to me that it was John who poisoned Lizzie. It was 2 o’clock in the morning. I turned up the light in the living room which was still not working and grabbed my coat in the dark, then I bolted out the door, racing to John's house. I had to ask him something about Lizzie.
I pounded on his door fiercely. Unexpectedly, it was Lizzie who opened the door. “Hey, Sophie, it’s you, what are you up to at this late hour?” Though it was so nice to hear her voice again, this made me nearly faint. “Might be another time traveling.” I muttered. “6th of June.” “What?” “Lizzie, you must listen to me. It may sound a little crazy. Your husband is not in love with you anymore. He is trying to kill you by poisoning. Don’t drink anything from him!” Surprisingly, Lizzie didn’t talk back. Tears welled up in her eyes, she lowered her head and robbed the edge of her clothes. “No, answer me! You have to say you promise!” “I promise.” She looking into my eyes said with sorrow.
……
It just felt like somebody had punched me in the head. I propped myself up to sit on the bed while the phone rang up. “Sophie…there is some bad news that I think you must know…” It was a call from Lizzie’s mother. That choked cry had implied everything. “No, why, why she just didn’t listen to what I said…” I couldn’t believe the repeated ending and I must find her. I attempted to turn on the light in the living room but it was just in vain. Right at that instant, a familiar voice said, “Sophie, what are you doing? Staying up late isn’t a good habit.” She smiled as she usually did. I hugged her and cried loudly. Yes, I came back to ten years ago at that time we were still living together. “Are you OK? You are crying? What’s going on?” “No, I’m not OK. I can’t. I can’t change the future.” I sobbed out, " Every time I try to change something up, I just keep running into failure.” “That’s all right. It’s not your fault. Everything is complicated and each moment contributes to the ending. I live my life without regret, without remorse. You should look forward and accept my leaving.” All of a sudden, the light came on, and she was gone, leaving me in the glittering light.
Hope you guys will like it and I am here to welcome all kinds of feedbacks.(●'◡'●)
light switch parallel worlds
According to Nathan W. Pyle, if you find a light switch that doesn’t control anything, then it “likely switches you between two nearly identical parallel worlds.”
Tell the story of someone who flips a light switch that doesn’t seem to do anything … that is, until things start to seem just ever so slightly different …
