A Quiet Place (2018) has earned a worldwide gross of $164M, having earned $50M on its opening weekend alone, and has been taken as a gift for horror film lovers around the world. I watched A Quiet Place on its second weekend in theaters, and found myself holding my breath during many sequences throughout the film. As a huge fan of horror films, I can say this film is a must see for anyone who loves scary movies. However, as stated in this article, it is also a must see for non-horror fans. I feel that A Quiet Place is the type of film that will inspire horror fans for many decades to come.

From the view of an outsider, Love, Simon (2018) could seem like just another high school teen comedy. You wouldn’t be particularly wrong. Love, Simon is a mainstream teen movie. But, what separates Love, Simon from its predecessors is its inclusion of a gay lead character. There has never been a mainstream high school movie with a gay lead at the center of it. This film has been praised not only for its progressive nature, but for how well it tells its story. The character of Simon is a great role model for LGBT youth and great representation for gay teens. Love, Simon proved that we need more mainstream films with gay leads and it shows in the box office, having reached a worldwide gross of $50M. It is important to support films like Love, Simon who provide representation for LGBT youth.

A24’s the kind of company where they say, “Yeah, they don’t need to know what it’s about. They just need to know how it feels.”—Barry Jenkins
When was the last time a distribution company logo has caught your eye at the cinema? For most, it’s never, until the logo before films such as Ex Machina (2014), Room (2015), Moonlight (2016), and most recently, Lady Bird (2017) starts becoming more and more familiar. No film distribution company has taken Hollywood by storm quite like A24. A24, known for it’s independent, “artsy” films, has produced some of the most successful and critically acclaimed films in past years, receiving more praise and attention than big-budget studio companies such as Fox. A24′s filmography only keeps growing as the years progress, distributing films that are praised by critics and indie loves alike. For many critics, audiences, and especially indie film fans, A24 films come like gifts on Christmas morning, and their growing success only makes their upcoming releases such as Hereditary (2018), Under the Silver Lake (2018), and A Prayer before Dawn (2018) all the more promising.

HIGHER STUDIO
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finding designer threads at a thrift store can be rare and consignment shops won’t give you a bang for your buck, but shopping at Higher Studio puts it all in perspective. Established for the economically educated, Higher Studio is the online enclave for borrowing some of the best names in high fashion.
That’s right, borrowing.
Sara Arnold, the brains of the operation, allows you to step into her never ending and always accumulating wardrobe to rent some of her hardly worn garments with brands ranging from Commes Des Garcons to Gucci. Although some prices may stagger into the high hundreds, considering a customer keeps the item for a week, it seems reasonable. Arnold’s concept is only on the come up but has so far recieved attention from various fashion magazines and fashion fanatics willing to donate some of their pieces for the same purpose. There’s no doubt Higher Studio is economically conscious, it promotes distribution and means of production. Prada produces, Arnold buys, and I get to borrow! Everyone wins. Economics rules.

THE ECONOMICS OF FILMMAKING
With the Oscars coming up this Sunday, it is the perfect time to discuss the not-so-glamourous side of the filmmaking industry (don’t worry, this topic doesn’t include the name Weinstein). It might be difficult to believe, but it is becoming increasingly harder to make money off of films nowadays. The article by Ann Arnold discusses the dilemmas filmmakers face while making movies, the types of films that rank in most of the cash, and the growing popularity of independent films and streaming sites like Netflix. In recent years, the US has faced difficulties with local language films as well as torrenting of films and online streaming services. DVD sales have declined and because of this, the main place where filmmakers can earn their budget back is in movie ticket sales. It is no secret that superhero franchises like Marvel and DC are the movies that bring in the most money. This would explain why there is such a huge abundance of superhero movies, there’s no wonder there seems to be a new one every other month, right? Thankfully, the box office doesn’t only consist of comic book fans’ wet dreams. There is a rise of independent, small to mid-budget films in Hollywood. These films don’t cost half of what large blockbusters cost to make, so being on a smaller budget means less money for marketing. Still, they have been proven to be successful through online buzz and rental services. Then there’s Netflix and Amazon streaming services, which have received lots of the blame for the decline in DVD and rental sales. Since movies are so easily accessible on these sites, many chose to not go to the movie theater and either wait for the release on their chosen streaming site, or watch a film that is already on them. Unfortunately, all of these factors are responsible for a lot of directors and producers being more concerned about financial outcomes than the artistic quality of their films. A huge amount of films’ budgets are spent on the marketing and getting audiences in the seats, and this could be part of the reason why we seem to only receive a couple gems a year. With award season in full effect, its important to talk about the current state of the film industry, but also to celebrate the incredible and successful films we received in 2017 like Lady Bird and Call Me by Your Name as well as stay excited and optimistic for 2018 film releases!
