3.6.18 The Leaky Cauldron Open Starter
Being seated at the bar certainly was not a common thing to happen in Amelia’s life. Or rather, she had basically cut down on visiting the bar since things got serious between her and Gwen. She picked whiskey as her drink of choice for the evening, wrinkling her nose when the bartender set the glass down in front of her.
She eyed the yellow liquid for a moment then braced herself for the sting that was bound to accompany her first sip. “To new beginnings,” She mumbled then tipped the glass back and took a large swig, lowering it to the table with a sour expression. Drinking the evening before she started work at her new position at the Ministry was likely one of her worst ideas. The idea of having a hangover to focus on seemed far better than having to seem completely enamored by how much good the Ministry’s new act would bring.

Alice was admittedly not much of a drinker. The most she’d have was maybe a glass of champagne on New Year’s or a glass of wine at dinner, but it was a rare occasion to see her at a bar. However, here she was and after the events of the past few weeks, it wasn’t exactly surprising once one really considered it. It seemed that she wasn’t alone in this. Amelia was someone she hadn’t been expecting to see as she pushed through the door of the Leaky Cauldron, but there she was, wincing at what she could only assume was one hell of a strong drink. A familiar face was almost comforting, and while she debated whether she should approach or not, she ended up deciding for the former.
“Hard week for you too?” She asked, only half-joking. In truth, Alice knew the answer even if she didn’t know exactly what was going on, and that was enough. Wordlessly sliding into the seat beside Amelia, she chose to ignore the desire to get a drink of her own in favor of prompting the girl to spill the beans. “Right then, out with it. What’s the matter?”

princessnarcissablack:
Narcissa nearly cocked her head, as if she were talking to some strange zoo animal. The woman was frenetic. Frenetic and quite strange to Narcissa. Though, as she offered he explanation, Alice at least seemed to take on some semblance of a sympathetic character. Displaced? She wondered if it would prompt some sort of wild retelling of her tale we’re Narcissa to ask her what she meant by that.
The cappuccino continued to warm her fingers as her silent debate was overwhelmed by her curiosity. After all, even if whatever Alice’s issue was ended up being of no interest to Narcissa, she would much rather know she asked over leaving herself to ruminate on it.
“Displaced?” She finally prompted, blue eyes meeting brown. Did she mean literally? If so…that was boring, though she would never say as much.
She gave a small half-smile at the question lobbied at her. “Looking for someone? Here? Most of my friends don’t congregate in areas like this one.” Shifting her coffee to one hand, she ran her free one though her long luxurious hair, flipping it to one side. “No, I came here for a photography showing.”
Tumblr media
Judging by the woman’s expression, Alice was sure she wasn’t making a great impression so far. On any other day, she would’ve been much more pleasant company, but between her current situation and this conversation, she’d quickly found herself on edge, stressed and as tense as a coiled spring. Fidgety fingers had already made work at tearing the crumpled napkin that had been resting just inches away on the table without her even realizing it. Upon realizing that she was, she was quick to drop it again and tuck those hands into her lap in some hope that it would stop her from looking neurotic for more than a second.
Part of her wanted to insist that she wasn’t always this anxious, but she knew it wouldn’t make much of a difference in the long run. The least she could do was try to calm her nerves down and hope for the best.
“Dislplaced.” She confirmed reluctantly, her annoyance over the situation written as clear as day on her face. While she was sure Narcissa hardly cared that much, she still gave some vague explanation in an attempt to push the issue aside. “My office at the Ministry’s currently a pile of rubble, so I’m having to get creative with getting work done.”
As soon as Narcissa responded, her question sounded incredibly daft. Quick to nod her head in understanding, Alice let out a short chuckle. “Alright, that makes much more sense. I guess this really isn’t your side of town, now that I think of it. What’s this showing about exactly, though?”

“How can the Ministry say they are protecting children if they are removing them from their families?” Evelyn glared at her phone. “And offering tax incentives to take them in? I–” She paused and pushed her plate away, feeling angry tears threatening to fall down her face. “I don’t think I can eat anymore.”
“I-” Alice stopped short, crestfallen as she watched the girl’s visceral reaction to the news. Granted, it wasn’t her conversation to be had, but even being a strong proponent of the Ministry hadn’t helped her rationalize or understand the new laws put in place any better. It just seemed wrong, but even if that was the case, she figured the least she could do was comfort the girl in whatever way she could. She hesitated, choosing her words before responding slowly. “Perhaps it’s just a temporary fix. I’m sure Minister Crouch is just worried about... security?” God, even that sounded wrong. “Everything will surely right itself soon. You’ll see.”

princessnarcissablack:
Narcissa didn’t frequently leave the chic Belgravian influence of London’s posher areas, preferring instead to keep herself surrounded by people closer to her equal. However, after reading an update about a wizard photographer showing off his perception of London through his camera lens, she had been intrigued. After all, she knew the photographer, and part of her had wondered if she might recognize some of the things in the photos. She had been right. Many an image had been presented of her world through eyes she’d never worn, and if she had left feeling somewhat enriched, she didn’t think she could be blamed.
The little cafe in which she stepped, her smart heels clicking on the rustic wood floor, was crowded. The whole place was…quaint, and she wondered if they could make a decent cappuccino. As she approached the counter, she was surprised to see so few people she knew. It likely meant that no one in the cafe was in the pureblood circle, so she didn’t know that she cared that she didn’t know anyone.
The cup in her hands warmed her palm as she heard a voice and looked up. This woman she recognized. She hadn’t ever really talked to her before, but the Fortescues were purebloods. Of course she knew of them. What was this one’s name?
“Are you…quite well?” She asked, quirking a well groomed brow. Was she talking to everyone in the cafe, or Narcissa herself.
Tumblr media
Alice jumped in her seat at the woman’s voice sounding behind her, her knee bumping into the table with a painful thud. She’d never claimed she was graceful, but this surely wasn’t helping her case much.
Of course the person who’d spoken up was someone she at least recognized. It was one of the Black sisters... Narcissa. Even if they’d never interacted much and as far as she knew, the woman probably didn’t even know exactly who she was, there was no way a wizard or witch in all of London wouldn’t recognize a member of a prominent pureblooded family. Alice was no exception to the rule. What the woman was doing around these parts was a great unknown, but what she did know was that she’d just made herself look like an absolute loon, and almost immediately she corrected her posture, reaching up to straighten out her hair that had inevitably become mussed from her constant fidgeting.
"As well as one can be when they’ve been displaced indefinitely.” Alice responded sheepishly, offering no more than a shrug of her shoulders as an explanation. Despite an awkward half-laugh she made at her own expense, her embarrassment was clear as her face grew hot and the tips of her ears reddened. Merlin, she’d never been the type to get so easily flustered, but the stress of being out of her routine on top of everything else that had transpired just within her workplace in the past week or so had been absolutely exhausting. Still, not one to let herself look too out of control, she took a deep, steadying breath before addressing the woman again.
“I apologize. Seems my head’s run off from me for a moment, but I hope it wasn’t too much of a bother.” Curiosity managed to get the best of her, however, and almost as an afterthought she added, “Though I would’ve never pegged you as the type to hang around these parts. You’re not looking for someone, are you?”

It was official. Alice Fortescue was truly and officially at her wit’s end.
Her office was supposed to be repaired days ago, and yet here she was scribbling away furiously in her notebook at some attempt at work. Really anything that she could do at this point to make herself look productive as normal  would have been welcome, but then again, that had all changed in a blink of an eye. Regardless of the future of the Ministry, it didn’t change the fact that it was incredibly hard to get any work done while distractions sounded all around her.
From the chatter of a noisy couple three tables down to the lazy, rhythmic tapping of the wizards wand to her left, it was only becoming increasingly difficult for Alice to concentrate on the task she’d put herself on. Granted, the final straw wasn’t so bad looking back on it, but added with every single other frustration she’d had in the span of her day, it was enough to send her over the edge. A groan escaped her lips as she tossed her quill onto the table in front of her before dropping her head in her hands. At that point, she’d assured herself of one thing: the pursuit of trying to get anything done in a place like this was entirely useless.
“Right, then.” She finally spoke up after a moment of terse silence, sounding almost as if she were trying to assure herself of her own words than anyone else. “It’s just a little noise is all. I’ll just wait for things to calm down and then hopefully I can manage to get something done. Not a problem at all, yeah?”

“After seven months of filming, I wanted to throw my corset in the bin,” she says. “You’re forced to walk around so demurely when you wear one, and I honestly don’t know how women did it. They wore so many layers too. Each dress basically has a big duvet underneath.” - Jenna Coleman for InStyle 2018.
