🔮 Crystals
I would recommend to start with amethyst and/or quartz. These crystals are both multipurpose as well as cheap and easy to find. Pretty much any spell you’d want to perform can use one or the other of these crystals, and they make great substitutions for other crystals. Quartz in particular can be used to cleanse other crystals or items in your altar.
🔮 Candles
Like crystals, candles are incredibly multipurpose. There are so many guides out there that lay out candle colour meanings, and while the colours can increase the efficacy of any spell work, intent is every bit as important - moreso, even. For that reason, you can substitute any other candles for a white one. So if you’re starting out, white unscented tealights are perfect and super inexpensive, and can still be used for just about any purposes you might need one for.
🔮 Divination Tools
There’s no one right answer here but if divination is your thing, think about what you’re drawn to. There are lots of options out there so decide where you want to start and branch out from there.
For pendulum dowsing, you can use a locket or other pendant necklace that has meaning for you and it will work every bit as well as a crystal pendulum.
If you want to use runes, you can easily make your own out of easy to find supplies - pieces of wood and a marker and a list of Runes and their meanings online.
And if you’re drawn to cards, don’t think you have to spend a fortune either. A basic Rider-Waite deck isn’t too costly and you can also find miniature sets online with a half-size tarot deck and accompanying guide book. This was my very first deck! Check online but also in bookstores as many of them sell these too.
🔮 Grimoire/Book of Shadows
Now you absolutely don’t need to go out and spend a ton of money on a fancy leather-bound tome - especially when you’re first starting out. Any old notebook will do, and remember that once you’ve started compiling research and information, you’ll probably have disorganised info everywhere. You can always re order and organise it into a more permanent book later.
You don’t even need to use a physical notebook at all. We live in the electronic age, after all! So you might find it useful to keep your information, research, and spells in an electronic format like a word document.
