Bobby startles in the middle of the night, a crazed tone to his touch as he shakes Athena awake.

“Buck–” the name still shakes when it comes out of him. “He can't – he can’t be cremated.”

It's always these things: interruptions in the middle of the day (or, in this case, night) that get you. Athena remembers being in her twenties and burying a fiance gone too soon, having to write things down in her head as if through a haze, always when she least expected them. Athena would wash the dishes and realize – I have to cancel Emmet’s library card. I have to call Emmet’s basketball friends. I have to give back the garage tools Emmet rented. Bobby’s current reminder is shakier though – more desperate. She recognizes the glance to his eyes as the one that came before emergency AA meetings.

She calls Maddie. She was closer to her than Bobby anyways, and, really, Athena doesn't trust him on the phone – or much of anywhere at all. She doesn't leave his side to call –in the middle of the night, waking up a pregnant woman– a hand tight around Bobby’s wrist as if he could drift away otherwise; it's the worry that tends to follow Athena through the days now. Even as Bobby is prostrated on their bed – something empty but still too deep in his eyes.

“Bobby wants a burial.” Athena pulls the words like they belong in a case file, although it's impossible not to betray herself at the edges. “Cremation…” she trails off. Maddie isn't that close to Bobby either – but she must understand.

“Of course.” Maddie’s voice sounds thick. It always does these days. Athena can hear cloth shuffling on the other side of the line that must signal Chimney comforting his wife. “He absolutely has a say.”

It would be a better confirmation of family in another setting. She just wishes Maddie good night.
