who: open to all where: ministry of magic gala when: 05/05/1979, evening
There was not one candidate whose platform Edith entirely agreed with. As Bagnold has pointed out, there was no proof that a Pure-blood was any stronger, more powerful, more intelligent than a Half-blood or Muggleborn. Squibs were a rather common occurrence in ‘pure’ bloodlines, after all. However, she did not see the good in integrating the magical and muggle worlds. What a dangerous notion to put forth. Yes, the isolation was difficult for muggleborns and their immediate families but opening the door, even a little, could only end in disaster.
When it came to those considered “tainted”, “half-breeds”, “beasts”, Edith could not align herself with Bagnold’s views on this matter either. Certainly, some individuals could be hazardous but wasn’t that the same for wizard-kind too? Couldn’t Bagnold see the hypocrisy in her stance? Well. No one was perfect, certainly Edith wasn’t. She believed in blood equality but how often had she spoken in support of it? At times her own hypocrisy weighed on her mind.
She found herself alone at her table, the others guests had promptly left their seats after the conclusion of the two candidates’ speeches. Edith rose from her chair with a sigh, it was about time she made like her table-mates and mingled with her peers too. She lifted a glass of sherry from a passing waiter’s tray, taking a sip of the sweet drink before setting off to find an acquaintance to talk to.
“What a pleasant evening, hm?” she commented sarcastically.
#noc.start#noc.event#there is... something missing between the last two paragraphs but i couldnt figure out how to get from point A to point B so#........

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, domitius has learned a few things. one, he isn’t supposed to work alone — it doesn’t matter what he has to do, it would be for the best if someone else is involved, if anyone can check on things with him before proceeding on doing anything; and two, even if the job is done, paperwork is a dull. even with the extra help he has sometimes, from other worker’s assistants mostly, he needs another set of eyes to check on things for him.
there is no particular reason for him to feel like edith is the person he usually should go to for these kind of things — it just makes sense, in his head, that she is the one to settle on the job and make sure he has it all put together. he would rather not have to go through anyone for this, that’s true, but since he was already there…
“this,” he says with a small, sarcastic smile, raising the paper he’s holding. “about last week’s incident, when a few muggles were present in a small confront,” an understatement ( in a few ways ) as there were rare moments when any those same confronts have been small nowadays. they were only growing bigger and worse and worrisome, but at least this one in particular was under some control… at least for the muggle viewers. before he proceeds on talking, he looks down at her better and raises his eyebrows. “sorry, were you going somewhere?”
"I was,” Edith began, placing particular emphasis on the last word, “but nowhere important. Come in.” Edith ushered him inside her office, curiosity and perhaps a sense of duty overriding her hunger. Perhaps it was just about work, though she suspected there might be something more to the visit. Regardless of the subject matter, she could find herself in worse company than Domitius Rosier. A friend? He wasn’t there yet, but Edith certainly appreciated the support he had been providing her in regards to this Order/Death Eater business.
Edith placed her belongings on the floor beside her feet as she settled into the couch to the left of her desk, gesturing to Domitius to join her. The imminent conversation likely would not be casual but she thought the more informal setting of comfortable lounges was more fitting than the formality of her sitting behind her desk and speaking to him as if he were some practitioner of Improper Magic.
“So, Rosier, what brings you here besides interrupting my lunch break?” Edith inquired.

「❄」a quaint little tea shop had been the decided meeting spot in their penned correspondence, nestled within the boundaries of wizarding london yet near breaching the entrance to muggle london. it was a favorite spot to muse on the eccentricities of their non-magical counterparts, schoolgirl years spent giggling in a corner over nonsensical amusements found in muggles, so blind to the magic that was merely a touch away. in that aspect, perhaps wizards were superior in their ability to build worlds right beneath the noses of non-magic folks. ( the stories of witch hunts and women burnt at the stake only spoke of a history in which wizarding kind were oppressed by fearful fools. who could blame the revolutionaries, then, for trying to eradicate the muggle race ? )
the cover of neutrality had eased the forging of their friendship, a shared look exchanged by two women entangled in the games of the ministry over champagne flutes slowly falling into a delicate place between curiosity and genuine loyalty ─ time would only tell if edith chang remained a friend after initial interest waned. subtle admiration had been uttered towards the woman, not too many years her senior, and introductions had been made by a previous flame ( more of a stepping stone onto the one privileged enough to escort narcissa black into high social gatherings at present time ) in an effort to win the favor of the supercilious black sister.
edith chang merged very smoothly into the image that she represented, a woman in charge yet still possessing the subtle delicacies of femininity that enticed narcissa upon first glance, the corners of her lips lifting upwards ever-so-slightly in acknowledgement as the muggle world was left behind and the pleasantly cool tea room enveloped her. ❝ mhm– rooibos steeped with a little honey, yes ? you know me so well, my darling. ❞ fine china that contained the red tea was lifted to her lips, quenching the thirst she had garnered after the brief stroll taken from the apparating point to their meeting place. ❝ i must admit, i was surprised to receive your invitation. i know that your department must be terribly busy of late. i do hope they mean to give you the weekend off. i heard that there is a soiree this friday, something related to the new head of wizarding education ? please say you’ll be there. ❞
Edith smiled in response to Narcissa’s praise. She hadn’t really doubted herself about the tea. The ability to recall these kind of minor details about a person was something Edith found to be useful in a variety of situations, though in this case there was no ulterior motive.
"Well, my attendance is practically compulsory so I’ll be there, of course,” she affirmed. Ever since her appointment to Deputy Head of the Improper Use of Magic Office, Edith had found her schedule filled with events like the one Narcissa spoke of. Keeping up appearances, rubbing elbows with her superiors, exchanging pleasantries with the elite of society. The higher she rose in the Ministry, the more important these things became.
“As for work, well, you’re not wrong,” she agreed, taking a sip of tea before continuing, “it is a bit... chaotic, currently.” She sighed, returning her teacup to its saucer.

A laugh left bella’s lips – a cold, frightening one quick to send a shiver down anyone’s back, yet currently DISGUISED as friendly and calm. something about edith interested bellatrix ( her character’s resemblance to one of her sisters’, perhaps ? her seemingly collected exterior and ease with which she carried herself ? ) admittedly, whatever it was seemed to exist in a complex plane, making it far too strange to bellatrix for her to put it into the nonchalant form of communication. the arousal of said emotions left bellatrix unable to feel fond of the other woman, but her work and commitment was well-received nonetheless.
careful eyes were posed on the other, an eyebrow raising as edith’s words reached bellatrix’s ears. a smile danced across ruby lips at her openess, to which she nodded and responded: “ i do pride myself on my punctuality, dear edith, ” words were sweet —- yet not affectionate. never affectionate. she scanned the woman form head to toe, again, unknowing of exactly what she was expecting to spot somewhere within her silhouette. bella smiled —— & as it was expected of bellatrix black’s grins, the one displayed to edith did not bother hiding the woman’s true raging madness. “ then i’m sure you’ll appreciate me coming along. there are some tactful manners i’d love to discuss with you – i’m sure you understand. ”
Edith found that her position in the Ministry lent itself quite well to the Death Eaters’ cause. Her title was Deputy Head of the Improper Use of Magic Office but under that also fell the Office for the Removal of Curses, Jinxes and Hexes as well as the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. Naturally, reports involving those affiliated with the Death Eaters often appeared on her desk. If someone was already a known criminal there was not much she could do for them but for those who had thus far managed to slip under the radar of law enforcement Edith had more room to manoeuvre.
However, her supposed alliance with the Death Eaters was still burgeoning and she lacked knowledge regarding who was or was not affiliated with them. Edith could only assume this had something to do with the tactful matters Bellatrix spoke of but attempting to predict what the woman was thinking was pointless.
“I wasn’t planning to go much further than the Atrium for lunch but I suspect our conversation will warrant something more private, hm?”

— Arthur let out a relieved sigh and smiled. “ Yes, that sounds lovely, ” he said, walking alongside her. “ Anywhere in particular you had in mind? Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade, oh, Muggle London, maybe? ” It was easy for Arthur to pick himself back up when he stumbled, easily forgetting a tense moment ( for the most part ). And, despite the fact that she was only a couple years older than him, Edith was still his superior, and he only wanted to be in her best graces. Perhaps even one day considered to be her friend.
“I was probably just going to end up at the same old café I usually go to, I’ll let you pick,” Edith replied. There were several locations in the Ministry where one could find a decent meal, and she had dined there on occasion, but Edith preferred to leave the building entirely to lessen the chances of being disturbed by work.
As they approached the lifts the gate opened and out flew several memos which began circling her. Edith exhaled sharply, shooing the paper planes away. “Go wait by my door until I get back,” she instructed, rolling her eyes as they darted off. “Not urgent, I suppose...”

grandmother had told him, once, arms crossed and a sigh on her lips, that he could get himself lost in a straight line. an exaggeration, perhaps, but as he turns past a window he’s sure he’s seen at least twice before, he thinks he may owe her a tad more credit. a hand through dark hair and he glances a moment out the window, eyes old and tired, weary with something more than simple fatigue. it was only hours ago that he’d stumbled from the hospital doors, the ends of his coat still stained with merlin - knows - what, after a pack of death eaters had brought someone’s party to an end. he’s done his part, answered every question the aurors had brought him in for, and merlin— he just wants to go HOME.
( ted loves being a healer. needs it, in ways he can’t quite put words to, to feel as he’s doing something – anything – to make this war just a little easier, the days just a bit brighter. but the weeks drag on, and for every life he saves two more are lost in the meanwhile, and he is so, deeply, tired. )
❝ oh ! i’m sorry, i didn’t see you there. —directions would be great, if you don’t mind. i’ll trade you, uh, a chocolate frog i swiped from the auror’s office. ❞
Edith couldn’t place the man before her but there was an inkling of familiarity about him. He’d come from the Auror’s office, but if he were an Auror she surely would’ve been able to put a name to the face. Perhaps he worked on a different floor? Though, unless he was a new hire, she probably would’ve recognised him too.
Well, whoever he was, he seemed worn out. Showing him out wouldn’t take up much of her time considering she was leaving anyway. So with that she answered him, “I happen to be on my way out of the office so I can do better than just directions.”
She was not a person who had many vices. Cigarettes and other drugs brought her no pleasure, alcohol was reserved for when she was in trusted company. With one of her only indulgences currently on offer, Edith pressed her lips into a smile and held out her palm. “I’ll take the chocolate first, though.”

——- ‘ STOP THAT, BELLATRIX. IT’S UNLADYLIKE OF YOU ’ had the couple continuously instructed their firstborn. whether it be giggling when dinning, scrapping her knees, whispering instead of talking, frowning, staining her dress or not knocking, bellatrix had grown up with so many restrictions she’d become accustomed to tiptoe even at her own home. such extreme and foolish guidelines upsetted the child, sending her into hissy fits that would be rapidly silenced by a slap in the face. in.between sobs, the young girl would apologize to her mother, and vow never to do repeat such poor behavior again. now, aged 29, bellatrix would often be found doing whatever she pleased. whatever action tickled her interest and proved exillarating enough to grasp her interest for long periods of time established her schedule, so much that the woman had now transformed into the epitome of UNPREDICTABILITY. she was a reckless one, the eldest daughter of cygnus and druella – so much that only a handful of her mother’s old-fashioned prohibitions continued to dictate her conduct nowadays. she was comprised of raucous laughter, lackadaisical footwork patterns, hunching, cursing and glaring at others as thought she were expecting her eyes to burn a hole through their flesh.
for that matter, she would never bother to knock – a handful of confused or shocked stares became fixed on her, as she allowed her infamous daunting smirk, attire the shade of DEATH itself and the maniacal, overpowering energy announce her presence to the seemingly-startled ministry employees.
the grin garnishing her sharp features widened at the sight of the other, and she took a moment to eye her from head to toe, to admire her, as if she’d been taken over by a tide of FASCINATION and INTEREST. her eyebrows remained slightly furrowed, not so as to convey confusion or anger, but as to give her expression an air of calm, control and superiority. “ i don’t know – can you be of any assistance, edith ? ” the hue of her lips mirrored that of blood – intense under the current light, yet with an underlying darkness to it as well. “ i like songbirds – yes, you know, those little birds that perch on the windows from time to time – ” bellatrix leaned against the doorframe, showing the most obvious form of comodity where she stood. one hand rested wrapped around her hip, while the other motioned every now and then as she spoke – “ i like to hear what have to say. have i arrived at an incovenient time? ” she finally asked, not expressing any regret at all, upon sensing the urgency to the other.
There were only a handful of people who intimidated Edith, and as luck would have it one was standing before her. She would never admit it, never let it show, but indeed, Bellatrix Black intimidated her. Even as a teenager she’d had a powerful presence, Edith had felt it all those years ago when she first met Bellatrix in the Slytherin common room.
Edith was acquainted with all three Black sisters, two of whom she considered friends. Bellatrix was not one of the two but that didn’t mean she counted her as an enemy, not yet. Time would tell on that front.
“Inconvenient? Your timing is quite perfect actually,” Edith countered contentedly, “I was just stepping out for lunch, I’d welcome the company.”
#* thread#alvvayspure#yes! she's an order spy so bellatrix is someone she'll want to become closer to lol

— It was no secret how…eager Arthur was at his job. The Misuse of Magical Artifacts Office (and subsequently, the Improper Use of Magic Office) was where he had always dreamed of working since before he began his days at Hogwarts, and it’s been an absolutely heavenly seven years. However, that was what was bothering him. Seven years. Still simply an assistant. And while he was truly happy and proud of the work he was doing, Arthur couldn’t help but feel as though he could do so much more.
Which was what brought him to Edith Chang’s office, but clearly, not at the right time.
Arthur looked down from his towering height (which really did make him self-conscious at times, such as this one) and gulped. “ Er, ” he started, but then took a step back, realising exactly how close he was. “ I was just wondering if you were free for lunch, Edith, but if I’ve caught you at a bad time… ” He trailed off, not quite knowing how to proceed.
She noted a slight uneasiness in Arthur’s voice, an awkwardness. Understandable. The tone with which she had greeted him had been a little sharp, hunger did tend to put one on edge. She softened her expression, smiling at him, before answering, "no, not a bad time. In fact I was just heading out to grab lunch myself, so really you came at the perfect time. Shall we dine together?”

who: @narcisscsm where: some tea room in london when: approximately 11am on a tuesday
Black with a tablespoon of honey and a small squeeze of lemon juice. This was Edith’s tea of choice, rarely did she stray from it. Today was the same and she simply nodded to the waitress when asked if she’d like The Usual.
Upon the front page of the Prophet laying before her on the table was the smiling face of a young girl. She took a sharp breath as she read the accompanying headline: Young Witch and Muggle Parents Found Dead in Home, Death Eaters Suspected. Scarcely did a day go by where there wasn’t a news story about violence towards Muggle-borns or so-called ‘blood traitors’. Still, the frequency didn’t make it any less horrifying.
Sighing, Edith flipped the paper over. This was not a story she wished to read over tea and anyway, she would surely receive a more accurate account of the crime when she went into the office later that day, whether she wanted to hear it or not. With nothing else to hold her attention until her friend arrived and joined her, Edith gazed out the shop window as she sipped her tea. The Muggles walking pass payed no mind to her people-watching, to them there was no hint of a decadent tea room behind the broken and bordered up windows.
Edith smiled as she saw a familiar figure walk by the window and eventually through the door. “I ordered for you, your usual,” she gestured towards the cup on the opposite side of the table from her, “well, I think it is anyway.”

location: improper use of magic office (ministry of magic level 2)
Edith let out a long sigh as she pressed the palms of her hands to her closed eyes. The work day felt as though it were dragging on more than usual. She slid her palms up to her temples and opened her eyes to check the time. Through slightly blurred vision she saw that the clock hanging above her office door read quarter to one. A lunch break seemed appropriate.
She grabbed her jacket and handbag from the coat rack by the door before pulling the door open. She hadn’t expected to be almost nose to nose with someone when she stepped out.
“Can I help you with something?” Edith asked. And can it wait? she thought to herself.

hiii everyone! i’m ottie. :-) i’m so pumped to get started and write with you lovely people. here is a little about page for edith, but i’ll also include some more info under the read more.
* △ — the dark lord has targeted [ EDITH CHANG ] ! the muggles say she holds resemblance to [ NI NI ]. the [ TWENTY-SEVEN ] year old [ CIS FEMALE ] was [ OBSERVANT & ASSERTIVE ] before the war, but have now become [ CALCULATING & ALOOF ]. though they were once a part of [ SLYTHERIN ], they have now taken up the position of a [ DEPUTY HEAD OF THE IMPROPER USE OF MAGIC OFFICE ]. whispers throughout the ministry claim that the [ PUREBLOOD ] is actually [ A SPY FOR THE ORDER ], but i wouldn’t report that to the daily prophet. ( OTTIE, 22, GMT+10, SHE/HER. )
recent recruit to the order, currently attempting to insert herself into the death eaters’ world. for security purposes only a few people high up in the order know she is actually a member.
also deputy head of the improper use of magic office.
was head girl for the 1970 - 1971 school year.
was in the slug club.
so the potential connections between her and your character are endless!!
for some reason (sexism) she grew up in the shadow of her younger brother, who (in her opinion) was pretty average compared to her. her parents praised his achievements over hers so eventually she sought the approval of her professors and peers instead.
edith is an adept occlumens, but you don’t have to be practicing legilimency on her for her to shut you out from her thoughts lol.
she’ll act according to who she is around and whatever the situation calls for. probably an oscar winner in an alternate universe.
she’s not cruel, but definitely not a cinnamon roll.
takes her work very seriously, a no-nonsense kinda gal.
this is.... not great but it’s 7am ok!! i’m bad at intros to begin with.
