Last night we visited the book fair at Charlie’s elementary school. After perusing the shelves, he chose Ben Hatke’s Zita the Spacegirl comic. I balked, feeling compelled to coach him toward a book that I felt was more substantial, less comic-y, more “readerly” … Then I remembered Neil Gaiman’s warning about pushing my reading choices on him, rather than endorsing and encouraging books that he will be thrilled to go home and devour.
So I paused, and then said, “Neil Gaiman says you can get the book you’re excited to read.” And I was excited that he chose a book about a spacegirl, and Charlie agreed to read aloud to me from it, and we went home happy, and I am so looking forward to reading Zita this weekend.

"Parents may not realize how quickly academic trouble develops for students with chronic absences. Students who miss 2 days of school a month are 47% less likely to read on level by 3rd grade than students who miss no more than one day per month. What a reality check. Parents may not even consider two absences a month to be a problem, but that's not what the data reveals. Every day in school matters. Every day out of school matters. A simple way to express love for a child is to make school attendance a top priority for the family,"

Attendance
Attendance in the early grades is very important to a child's success in school. One in ten kids in kindergarten and first grade students are absent. Why this matters, Seventeen percent of kids who chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade can not read past a third grade level. They have missed out of fundamental reading and math skills to carry them through the school years. This leads into low test scores, retention in later grades, and continued attendance problems in the future. What we can do to help- Engage Families in the importance of education in the early years, help with transporation problems, and address health needs that due with the children missing school. Lets work together so that each child recieves the best education possible.
