ARTH-102 Final Assignment

For my final piece I decided to combine aspects from our futurism assignment and the formal elements assignment to bring attention to our planet and the environment . The entire collage was made across two pages from my sketchbook and framed. I cut out background pieces from magazines in the complementary colors of blue and orange. Some of the blue is pictures of water and some of it is the sky. I took the typography from the futurism unit to write out the phrase “The earth is what we all have in common”. I think this phrase is very powerful because it demonstrates our shared responsibility toward our planet. 

On the far right of the collage I included people with binoculars observing what is happening in the rest of the collage. They are watching the  world burn represented by the explosion in the middle of the piece. I also included housing developments toward the bottom to demonstrate how humans are taking away homes of animals to build properties and further expand our society. The environment is a topic I am very passionate about and I wanted to capture that in this final assignment!

For this weeks project I made a necklace. This was made out of a cardboard box as the pendent, an avocado bag around the beads and a ribbon. The leaves are from a fake plant I found as pieces on the side. This was a fun week!

This is my puppet, Jesse (even though he looks like the Lorax) and he speaks for the trees. He is an advocate for environmental awareness, and loves Madonna! For his body I used a pop can, and cut holes to attach his arms and legs. His arms are string from an old crochet kit with beads, and his legs are cardboard from a paper towel roll with some foam feet. His glasses are cardboard and his mustache is styrofoam. His hair is also string.

futurism

These are solar powered hearing aids which are exactly what they sound like. These hearing aids use the sun to power them and recharge, these hearing aids are lower cost and better for the environment! They have also been heavily utilized by underserved countries. I included a colorful wave behind the ear to try and demonstrate what service hearing aids give to those who need them.

I love all of the different cutouts you used and how you assembled them on your background! It all comes together perfectly!

For the Cubism Assignment I started my background shapes with pencils and then added shapes with markers. I then cut out fun colorful pieces and shapes with lots of character and brought them together!

ARTH-102 Fauvism

For this homework I was inspired by this picture of my sister, Molly. In this picture I used of her she is pushing a cart full of flowers. To capture her bright personality I used very vibrant colors. I chose green for her skin color not only because it captures her goofy nature but it also happens to be her favorite color! In the background I used to colors pink, orange, and yellow to encompass her warm and loyal persona. Molly can be very passionate at times and I think I did a good job of carrying that over in the bright fiery colors I used for her hair. Molly is also very down to earth and gentle, so I used a blue color for her shirt and the covering at the top of the page!

The moment I chose to recreate was Brandi Chastain’s iconic celebration at the 1999 Women’s World Cup. After playing a full 90 minutes and some, the game went into penalty kicks and Brandi Chastain scored the game winner, which led to this celebration. This World Cup was the start of a turning point for women’s sports as it broke attendance records and television records.

This moment is so memorable because no woman had celebrated a win like this. It was all people could talk about at the time and is still brought up several years later. Though some found it problematic it remains a symbol of strength, joy, and empowerment that can come from sports. When this US women’s team brought home the cup it inspired future generations of female athletes all over.

ARTH-102 Midterm

The pop culture moment I chose was the release of the Barbie movie in 2023. Instead of recreating an image that has been retouched using digital editing apps, I decided to create a collage that I believe reflects this moment. 

Barbie was a career-driven woman who was supposed to be a symbol for all girls everywhere showing us that we are able to achieve anything. But now Barbie has become a beauty standard, something we are all compared to or are striving to achieve somehow. Today we see several people who go through intense body modifications to resemble Barbie in some way. It is upsetting to see Barbie as something we feel compared to instead of empowering. We are becoming desensitized to a realistic standard, blurring the lines between what is  attainable and what is fantasy. 

In my opinion, our society does this to several things. Take fitness for example, it used to be about promoting health, wellness and strength has somewhat become about unrealistic standard of physical fitness and achieving and ideal body type. We repeat this over and over, with every new trend and it is not healthy for our society. People will do outrageous things, or spend tremendous amounts of money to reach their idea body or face. I wonder if editing will get phased out and we will shift more toward a ‘natural beauty’ standard.

Homework 3–Your Art Voice

For this collage I decided to take inspiration from @athenaparisi and @javitta23. In both of their pieces I noticed the main focal point was a person, so I decided to include on in mine as well. Additionally, they both included some type of writing in theirs, whether it was a song lyric or an album name. I also wanted to put that aspect in my collage as well. One final thing I took inspiration from was the plaid-ish pattern on both. Both of their collages are very pleasing and cohesive. And you can only wonder what the individuals in their collages are thinking about, I feel as though I created that sense in my collage as well. The man on the bench, and the woman in the corner both have stories but we do not know what they are. Finally I decided to include the words “we are beautiful works in progress”. I thought it fit well with the collage and this class!

One of my favorite albums is "Strange Trails" by Lord Huron. I like how it incorporates nature and how it feels like the person in the hat is the viewer looking out at his surroundings. It seems like they’re in awe, which mirrors the folk and whimsical sound found throughout the album.

I took my inspiration mainly from the feeling of perspective I get from the album cover. I wanted my artwork to make the viewers feel the same way as the person in the cover, as if they are the ones looking at the beauty of nature. I used the newspaper clips to make it feel like you are seeing glimpses of different nature scenes like the person on the album. I added my drawing of the person on the cover at the bottom looking at the nature images. I used my sketchbook paper, newspaper clips, colored pencils, and glue.

I really love the album How To Save A Life by The Fray. My favorite song from the album is Over My Head (Cable Car). What I took inspiration from on the album cover was the broken light bulb, the contrast of brightness in relation to proximity of the bulb and the subtle seemingly vertical line print of the background. Materials I used to create this were: water color paint, colored pencils, ink pen, and a clipping from a magazine to get the lightbulb.

HW #2–Formal Elements

For my background I decided to go with the complimentary colors blue and orange. I found a pair of overalls in one of my magazines and thought it made the perfect base. I added a foam finger and a hand with some paint on it. I found a cow that fit perfectly in the overalls, and gave the cow a nice haircut. I also paired the outfit with some nice cowboy boots! It looked like there was something missing on the outside so I decided to add an orange flower, and some blue patters to stick with the complementary colors.

For this first homework I decided to use the album “Abbey Road”, by the Beatles. While I was looking for albums to use I came across this one and got inspiration from the band members walking across the middle of the cover.

I really love how attention is drawn to the four men caught in stride, so I decided to put a spin on that. I decided to use flowers for their heads, as I love nature and wanted to incorporate that somehow. I also used different patterns for the crosswalk for more of an interesting flair. I decided to draw the bodies in white so it didn’t take away from the other patterns in the collage. Additionally I added some clouds in the background, and instead of drawing a sun I decided to use a cupcake. I wanted to keep some elements the same so I added some greenery to the sides of the street.

Although I have several favorite songs from this album, Golden Slumbers is currently my favorite.

Hi! My name is Elizabeth and I am from Buffalo, NY. I am currently a sophomore health science major with a biomedical concentration, with hopes of pursuing a career as a physician assistant! I have three siblings, two older brothers and a twin sister. I also have two goldendoodles at home! I love to exercise, read, and travel, and would love to visit all the national parks someday! I am super excited to start this class and begin creating!
