Seasons 1-3
Lana because she didn't love Clark or Lex. But the friendships she begins with them is at a very young age. And experiences shape their relationships.  She literally tried to cheer up Clark or Lex all of the time in up until season 6, and in the comments people were just calling her fake or phony or said that she was throwing herself at them.  Now in Season 3 Lana asks Clark about his secret after some crazy things happen, and he doesn't tell her.  She thanks Clark for saving her life in season 2, but doesn't straight up tell me.  He just pretends like none of it happened, and that's frustrating.  Then in season 2 they're mostly friends excluding Clark on red-kryptonite when he flirts with her, but then goes for a blonde.  Clark runs away in the finale, on Red-K too.  This leads to Lana and his dad trying to get him back, and Jonathan making a promise to Jor-El that ruins his health and leads to his death and heart-attack.  Lana did care a lot about Clark when they were friends, she was there for him when;
1.  His mom got sick.
2.  He went blind.
3. His dad had a breakdown.
She does the same for Lex when he has two mental breakdowns this season.  Caused by Lionel, who keeps drugging Lex and locking him up to cover up the fact that Lionel killed his own parents for loads of money. She did ask about his powers this season.  But only twice, and so supportively it drives me wild that people call this whining and they are not using reason when they compare Chloe season 4 to this.  All Chloe did in seasons 1-3 was throw herself at Clark and try to find out his secret.  Not by asking directly either, by adoption records, journaling about him, and going to Lionel Luthor.  Lana doesn't ask again until season 5, so people that say she is asking all of the time are overreacting and using that as a reason to hate her.  In season 4 she doesn't tell Clark about her tattoo, because they're on outs.  But she tells her boyfriend, because he's her partner.  Lana shows Clark her tattoo in Spell.  And Lex, but Lex is always digging around and they're not really on outs until Onyx.  She also tells Clark he's a great friend and how he's the only one not using her.  In Reckoning Mr. Kent dies of a heartattack.  People twist this to blame on her. No she didn't throw herself at Lex, he was depressed and called her.  No, Clark going back in time is not her fault, neither is the fact that Jonathan would've had a good heart if it wasn't for Season 2 and Exile.
Seasons 5-6
Lana becomes obsessed with aliens.  But that's reasonable, she saw aliens massacre a ton of people.  She tries to tell Clark, but he is not up for discussion on this topic after Hidden.  She's convinced there are aliens living among mankind, and tells Clark in Arrival and Fanatic.  Clark uses her obsession with aliens as the reason to why they are not sleeping together anymore.  And not you know- that he's an alien.  Whatever, people blame Lana for Clark getting upset in that scene too.  Lex thinks aliens are going to take over too.  He wants to save the world- apparently.  He convinces Lana he wants to save the world and maybe he does.  I'd believe him more if he didn't have a fascination with locking people in cages or strapping them to tables and watching them get tortured and experimented on.  And if he wasn't stalking Clark instead of just asking him questions anymore.  But this may be the one thing he does, that actually has very good intentions.
She admires him or this and grows an attraction thinking that Lex is mature, responsible, and honest. I found that really annoying.  But she's known him since was 14, and probably can't imagine that he would do anything like torture an innocent person.  That's because he's also extremely affectionate towards her, since meeting her.  Anyone that's been friends with someone years wouldn't think them capable of torture.  Especially if they have been manipulated to feel that way.  Anyway their "love" is creepy and more of a devotion to one another.  But she thinks Lex is doing good, and trying to prevent an alien invasion.  Thinking the Black Box, which she threatens a scientist over holds the key to stopping aliens with their own technology.  She's not doing it to "support Lex's evil schemes"  Actually Lex tries to create weapons, and she takes the scientists side.  She doesn't want a war, because she's not Lex.  In fact he knows deep down she is wary of his intentions, and pays off her doctor.  In phantom pregnancy scene, which leads to Lana ultimately accepting Lex's true nature.  But also causes an emotional breakdown, she says Lex will only hurt more people.  He admits this in Kara, but she does not shoot.  She tries to kill Lex later, convinced that his research for aliens is only for world domination.
Season 8
Lana changes and decides not to kill Lex, even when Clark and Oliver say they will.  She tries to convince them not to because she longer interested in revenge, only preventing more harm.  It shows character growth.

Lana Lex and the Affects of Abuse
The sad thing is it's been 20 years and people still don't understand grooming, gaslighting, abuse, or manipulation. They just make excuses to blame everything on either her or him and hate one or the other. Now I know I didn't have to. But I've read so much on Lana deserved Lex to hit her or the phantom pregnancy because she didn't realize he was evil, although he pretended to be good). Or she allowed Lex to manipulate her for all those years they were friends- she's so stupid. But if someone has known you since you were 14, and is seemingly a decent person, of course you aren't going to think them capable of certain behaviors.  Especially if they go out of their way to be overly affectionate or gentle with you.  They want to save the world based shared experience of seeing aliens kill others.  Trying to stop a disaster is not evil, and I’m surprised the alien research is read as evil at all after the events of the episodes Zod and Arrival, especially.
Or people ranting about how they have always hated the "angel in distress" or "perfect princess" or blah "cheerleader" and these are adults (and men even) being so obsessively immature and hateful of a 14-15-16-17-18-19 yr old character. Because they follow the cheerleaders are fake stereotype or expect a petite kid to be able to fight super-powered beings.  Victim shaming/ blaming is the worst IRL and in forums.
No, going after someone evil doesn't make you evil if they are just going to hurt and kill a ton of people anyway. If you think aliens are going to invade of course you will make a stupid threat which isn't half as bad as: the guy who killed his parents and abuses his son and wife and never got called out for it or stayed in prison. But I digress... I only got that angry because I read this hate. Yet no one trashed Lionel who took pleasure in abusing his son and throwing his wife to the ground. Or the fact that he's strangled his son before because of money.  Along with poisoning him.  And even forcing drugs into his food to get him institutionalized and brainwashed. His wife didn't abuse him, his son didn't abuse him, he was the abuser. Lionel pretends like Lex and Lillian were just crazy and he had to stop them. He's never told off by anyone for these things.  And people like to say he was never evil.  Or that Lana was the most despicable for trying to stop Lex in season 7.  Lex who's become someone that locks people in cages to experiment, then kills them after.  Except for people who also like to victim-shame Lex, saying he deserved it because he's going to turn out evil anyway. No one deserves abuse.
These views are toxic and forceful in not to even trying and understand abuse because they'd rather get-off on hate and feel good for using spiteful harsh language. Or even deny the abuse or events ever even happened to validate their own blind-views. I have knowm women who have been abused by a partner they thought they could trust, because they knew them for years.  It leads to a mental breakdown, which is what the character is meant to be going through and what people mock.  Just like I know children who are spiteful because they've been abused by their father or mother. People either change and decide to help others- or stay in their depression and cannot change. It's not their true nature, it's a bi-product of abuse. Lex's destiny represents continuing the cycle which is why he kills his father.  Compassion and context is really important when watching this show as much as any.

Lana, Lex, Clark, and Lionel debate

That's why Lana did all of that volunteer work for blood drives. Or helped Adam when he pretended to be homeless. Wanted to use Lex's money for halfway houses and immigrant slavery. You know this Lana-hate which THANK GOODNESS is almost over is just out of spite.

X 1 day ago
@Supernova She was the show's worst character. Treated like a perfect saintly Mary Sue who could do no wrong even though she can and had done plenty of wrong. She was a hypocrite who supposedly hated being lied to and having secrets kept from her only to lie and keep secrets herself. Her entire relationship with Clark was her trying to force him to tell her about his powers then having a tantrum when he wouldn't. She got jealous when men she fancied kissed other women even if she was with other men at the time. Even when she was with Whitney she gave Clark and Chloe a jealous look when she saw them kissing. Because Lana apparently believed that men had to pine for her until she was ready for them. Characters who were complete strangers to her would call her amazing out of nowhere even though she wasn't which was just the original producers projecting their obsession with the actress and character. Her and Clark's relationship was lust not love. They only liked each other for their looks and because they wanted to have sex. Anything Lana did wrong was ignored or portrayed as right. Like kidnapping the reformed Lionel and having him held hostage by a crazy woman for forcing her to marry Lex, when she was with Lex she threatened to have the college fund of the daughter of a LuthorCorp employee cut off unless said employee gave her the box from Brainiac's ship, she pretended to set up a clinic to help Kryptonite powered people but instead just used it to spy on Lex, nearly killed Lois while trying to kill Lex. People hate Lana because she's the worst character in the show, never had a clear set in stone character, was played by an actress hired for her looks not her acting ability, in other versions of Superman Lana Lang is just Clark's high school girlfriend. Therefore Lana should have left the show for good when she went to France at the end of Season 3. Instead they kept her around until Season 8. She was one of the most evil characters in the show yet was treated as if she was pure and innocent. At least Smallville's other villains were shown to be what they were.
A 8 hours ago (edited)
Only lust not love? When there were together they often go on normal dates, which they talk about of you listen to the dialogue. Apparently they always either go out to dinner, horse-riding, or dancing. They don't even sleep together for years of being friends. Anyway Clark is the major gaslighter in the show, gaslighting means making someone believe something isn't true even when they know it is. That is all Clark does to Lana and Lex throughout the first 3 seasons every-time someone threatens them about Clark. Lex tries to talk to him after being told by multiple people that Clark has a dangerous secret (like Lana) and just asks Clark outright. "Friendships built on secrets are destined to fail" and Clark says "good thing we don't have that problem". This is actually gaslighting. Making someone believe that something didn't happen, which can actually drive people out of their minds. "There's nothing more to me than what you see" to Lana who actually saw him use his powers "You'd still be the same Clark Kent." Which is what she says every-time she asks about the secret which is really in 3x02, gunpoint 3x03 after being kidnapped over the secret, and 5x10 because he suddenly stopped when they were going to sleep together. Then of course Clark blames her for moving away to college. And wait she actually think she asks about his health, because at this point she went to Lex and told him to stay away from Clark because he's "just like the rest of us". As for secrets in season 4 Lana admits everything which she had already told her current boyfriend and Lex about. She tells Clark after they become friends again. Why tell someone something if you aren't even talking to them? Then we see in 5x10 that Lana brings up aliens and tries to talk about the spaceship with Clark, before it's revealed that she accepted Lex's offer. Because Lex truly thinks aliens are going to invade and take over the world. Once Lex is revealed, you really expect her just to lie back and know that he's doing a ton of messed up stuff and not go after him? Lex is evil, but let him be? Going after an evil person doesn't make someone evil. And oh Lionel- didn't he kill his parents and a ton of innocent people over the years. Didn't he abuse his family? Who cares! But you seem to forget that Lana did save Lois' in Gone and Arrival. As for Lois, Chloe does confront her about that. But no Lana is not evil, she goes through therapy and reformation before returning because of some mental issues from being with Lex. And is your comment is less an accurate view of the show and more a rant.
X 7 hours ago @Ambrosia 777 She was right to go after Lex but didn't care how many innocents she hurt to get to him. And Lionel had redeemed himself after switching bodies with Clark cured him of a liver disease that was killing him and spent the rest of his life protecting Clark until Lex killed him. As bad as Clark's lying and secret keeping was he was doing it to protect people and make it so they didn't get put in danger or killed by his life as a hero.
A 6 hours ago
But she didn't plan to hurt Grant or Lois. Grant only didn't want to expose Lex because he worked for him. Anyway Lana had mental issues, she needed to work through. A fake pregnancy and finding out all of those things she defended Lex from were actually real broke her. But then and I read that blog post, she really did torture. herself because she didn't want to be that kind of person. Anyway the Black Box was supposed to protect the world from an alien invasion, until Lex wanted to start using it to make weapons. Then she disagreed, because she didn't want innocent people to die. Because she's not a Lex copy.
A 6 hours ago
Oh no I'm not a Clark hater at all. But I really hated how he pretended like Lex and Lana were imagining things and all of those people that kept telling them about him were lying. I know Clark is a good guy, but that took a toll on his friendships with them. They tried to prove they would care about him no matter what he was or why all of those things were happening. If a ton of people tried to kill me, then said yow know Clark has a secret. I'd want to know. And it's not like they argued with him about it, they asked directly. Straight to the source. Far better than just ending the relationship because Clark had a secret identity. Until Lex flat out started stalking him and that whole thing in Mortal which I will not excuse.
L 2 days ago (edited)
@A  All that truth scarred him off. Adults blindly hating a teenage girl and insulting the actress don't need attention anyway. To think that Lionel spent his entire life killing people and being a wife beater, to earn sudden forgiveness and still treat Lex like crap. While Lex turns into this kind of misguided monster. And Lana spends 1 year doing questionable things to protect the world from aliens or Lex and she's evil! Don't get me started on that teenage crap this grown man commented at first.
L 3 hours ago
And where does this “whining” all the time come from?! She asks twice in season 3 after Clark runs away and doesn't ask again until season 5. Compare that to Chloe seasons 1-3. I think Lana-haters know they just exaggerate and hate the character because they're insecure or immature. Especially when it's a grown man saying these hateful things.
X 3 hours ago
@L  Horrible things Lex and Lionel did were acknowledged as horrible. Horrible things Lana did were either ignored completely or treated as if they were right. Not liking a badly written and acted character isn't insecurity or immaturity. And there are plenty of women who hate the character of Lana as well. You liking her doesn't mean everyone has to.
A 9 minutes ago
You don't have to. Some of the things you said about Kristin and Lana in other comments read that way. And I truly think Lex and Lionel were evil because they had no reason to do those things. But Lana truly believed Lex when he said the Black Box could stop and invasion. And was mentally shook when he was revealed to be a bad guy who does all of these things she thought he wouldn't do, so she went after him. I'm just saying she's not evil or monstrous and ignoring the plot or reasons to hate Lana is unreasonable. And Isis was used to help meteor-freaks after she changed and stopped going after Lex.
L 4 minutes ago (edited)
@A that explained it way better than I did. If someone believes they are stopping a huge evil are they evil? Especially when compared to people who do worse things for their own amusement.

Smallville PSA
If someone tells you to skip seasons 1-3 please do not be a follower. Seasons 1-3 are the highest rated for a reason. It's when all 3 main characters are friends, and it build their relationships and the dangers they face. If someone tells you to skip seasons 1-3 it's either because they don't like Lana, Lex, their friendships with Clark and are trying to make you not like them as well. They also may be obsessed with Chloe, who is pining after Clark in season 1, but tries to find out Clark's secret in 2, and teams up with Lionel Luthor in 3. Please don't let their biases stop you from enjoying the highest rated seasons.

Some people are saying to skip Smallville seasons 1-3 but I feel like they are doing that just because they don't like Clana or Clex or really love Chloe. But seasons 1-3 are important to the show. It sets up the characters relationships and dangers. They are also are the highest rated seasons for a reason.

I don’t get the hate for her in this episode either!  If someone is just going to kill a ton of innocent people in experiments or take over the world- it’s reasonable to go after them!

She was willing to kill Lex though when Zod was trying to take over the world and kill the human race.  But that's actually very heroic so I'll let it slide.
