AITA for arguing with my BF about his negative comments towards my dog.

I love my dog. And my BF loves my dog. But he takes his “Jokes” too far in my opinion. She’s a little thicker bc she’s a sticky breed, Pitbull, Bulldog, Chow. So she’s got a robust figure. But she’s not over weight. Also she acts like a puppy bc she’s young and a bit Derpy. But she is a very smart dog, and she picks up on a lot of things. The only thing is, she listens primarily to me. With his, it’s touch and go. With me, it’s law.

Most of his comments are about her being fat or not too smart. But he always pokes fun at her. We went on a 30 minute walk the other day, and halfway through, the entire time he was saying things like “why’s your dog so fat? Why did you get one that’s broken? What’s wrong with this thing?”.

So I snapped. I told him to stop and that it’s hurtful. That I can take a joke, but if he’s gonna spout one off every minute talking poorly of my dog then to just stop.

His defense is that he’s just joking, it’s not a big deal, he acts like this to everyone’s dog. But like, if someone was telling you your kid was overweight or a “window licker” over and over (he has referred to my dog as such) you would get mad too.

Then proceeds to get mad at me and say “fine. I won’t say anything since you’ll just get mad at me.” Somehow I ended up apologizing.... WTF.

AITA? Am I just being sensitive? He says I’m overreacting but I think I’m justified.

EDIT: I want to thank everyone that dug a little deeper into this post. Majority of people really gave me a better sense that this behavior is a manipulative tactic and that it does need to be addressed before I fall further into the rabbit hole. It is true, this behavior extends beyond the concept of “poking fun at my dog”. I appreciate everyone’s opinions and advice in the matter.
