They have a retractable spike under each eye, used for defensive purposes! Sometimes individuals can be seen "sparring" one another with their spikes to establish pecking order.

They can grind their pharyngeal teeth to create clicking noises, which they use to communicate with one another! These fish are well known for their funny behaviour, like sleeping on their side and piling on top of their fellow conspecifics.
