Ok i would like to speak my mind and maybe using this as a jumping off point isnt the best butttt,, from someone who does enjoy bittersweet as a concept and does have many sweet-black-colorways, id like to say that think a whole lot of sub-styles have like extra sub-styles- at least in sweet alone because i swear overlap in all substyles is so common --> example

to me there is "normal" or maybe something close to all sweet, classic, and gothic, but most of the time it leans sweet to me, so i would consider this "normal" sweet, or just plain sweet? i cant really describe it but ykwim.. anyway though these are sweet its not really bitter sweet material

Then there is the overtly sweet, your cakes, your animals, your super cute motifs, all that OTT goodness, to me, if in the black colorway, they would be the BACKBONE of the bittersweet coord. YES BITTERSWEET

Ok this is like Halloween sweet, cute motifs of cute versions of spook. MORE SWEET THAN GOTHIC but it is a mix of both but overall NOT BITTERSWEET, just sweet-spooky

These too, these are OVERTLY HALLOWEEN THEMES, NOT 100% SWEET

and this is confusing, these are sort of designs that are a combination of all three, classic i guess, its the least, sweet-frills, hearts, fabric,. And gothic-crosses, and the common black, but i say THESE ARE NOT BITTERSWEET, they're just complicated in different ways, but not bittersweet,,,

What people usually think of for bittersweet is a black colorway of a sweet print yea? well I pretty much agree but heres the thing,

left is cherry berry bunny in black and the right is cherry gingham

which is bittersweet? clearly the left one from (black and pastel) vs a more refreshing otome sweet-classic type of design

What about these? left is a cute cake print on black, pastel pink and red with straight black right? "but the right is more or less the same isnt it?" NO, because the right is a sweetxclassic print, k dont @ me but to me the diamonds are ALWAYS a more classic print than sweet, and since its sweetxclassic and not just sweet, to ME it is not.

Anyway long story short, to ME in MY OPINION, bittersweet must be an 100% sweet print with pastel elements, it must have more black than the pastel in the print, and when one does bittersweet, they must be 100% in on it.

TL;DR

To me theres a difference from just wearing the black colorway than actually doing bittersweet, and it usually comes down to the print or concept of the coord and main piece

Question to all Lolitas: do you think bittersweet is a real sub style of its own? If so, why? And perhaps most importantly: how do you personally define bittersweet?

HI!! ik my prt 1 wasn't very popular and its honestly all Tumblr's fault ;~~~~; Anyway thanks to whoever did like prt 1! I'll be continuing from where i left off! Oldschool has always been used as short hand and as a key word to describe the aesthetics and style of pieces from a certain time and not just pieces actually from that time. What ever Happened to Angelic Pretty's polka dots? (prt 1) (2003-2006) A timeline of their polka dots

Something I notice with Angelic Pretty's releases is the shift of solid patterns and prints. I don't really mean any of their original prints or designs but their more generic prints like stripes and stuff like that. ***

Ill be looking at the solid/solid-like releases all the way from super to now and see what i can gather from all this

PS There might be some print-ish stuff but i see it as a print on a polka-dot fabric not an original print like Cherry Berry Bunny which happens to have polka-dots

Valentine egl (not)themed prints Valentines day leads to many fun and cutesy prints and coords around egl and lolita spaces. Though I personally like the lovecore aesthetic, its not just pink and red colorways, so I'm gonna list some of my favorite prints that aren't explicitly valentines or love themed but evoke some valentines day spirit! *** #1 Angelic Pretty * Melty Chocolate

Out of all of AP's chocolate prints, which i love most of, the Melty Chocolate series to me just screams valentines chocolate. You dont need to be explicitly red and pink and all that to be valentinesy,the heart chocolates sort of provide this love theme anyway!

P.S Special shout out to the pink colorway! Its a bit cliche for the pink x brown colorways nowadays but to me it's a classic, especially on this print!

#2 Angelic pretty * Strawberry Millefeuille

OK OK i know i just put an AP print but again, out of all the strawberry prints AP has made, it really has never gotten much better than this :L The polka dots and the very bold lines of color really accentuate the cute strawberries and the lace pattern and overall its very lovely and speaks valentines to me.

#3 Baby the Stars Shine Bright * My Favorite Things

Ok well,,, Im a little biased because i have this print and i absolutely adore it, but its justified to me!(and its MY blog so i can do whatever i want) The print itself has little gift boxes, sweets, cakes, bears, roses, bows, and other super valentines like things! P.S shout out to the black colorway! it could be coorded in a more lowkey way but still be super lovey dovey!

#4 Baby the Stars Shine Bright * Sweetie Gingham Border

This to me is a more chill, less OTTP vibe. A slightly country and maybe classic print with the gingham stripes with the roses and strawberries. Its like having a cute little strawberry picking session for valentines day or something like that. Overall i find this print a little underrated cuz it reminds me of a table cloth and personally i think those types of prints are so charming!

#5 Metamorphose Temps de Fille * Florence

This whole release in general was so lovely to me when I first saw it, it was this beautiful romantic cut with a huge bustle and with an adorable mini cape. The print reminds me of fine tea sets and roses in the snow, perfect for valentines day when you want to feel like love incarnate.
