Fandom has a same face problem and Rick isn’t all the descriptive Jason and Luke were drawn similarly for a long time. A lot of the white characters just all sound the same to me until TOA where he seem to try to be better.

It's less same-face or even Rick's descriptions. For Jason, it's extremely intentional that he's described similarly to Luke; it serves a narrative purpose. Everybody else has different descriptions. (The real egregious example of his is that nearly all his redhead characters are almost identical.) The fandom just has bad character design etiquette. Same Face isn't nearly as much of a problem if everything else about the character is different, but the fandom rarely varies anything else if anything at all. Sometimes they actively lessen the difference between characters - the amount of times I've seen a lineup of the Argo II girls and they all have the exact same skin tone and hair color and eye color and body type. Or the amount that characters actively described as having different body types (Jason [very muscular], Frank & Meg [fat], Clarisse [plus-sized], Nico & Leo [small and scrawny], Mr. D [pot-bellied] & the Dionysus twins [resembling their father], Magnus [tall], etc etc) are all instead given identical figures.

I suspect part of it is because the fandom back in the day was HEAVILY influenced by old anime fandoms and it never really shook that inspiration - which is why a lot of the classic PJO fan designs look the way they do. But this also means everybody has chronic same-face and same-body type and the fandom never grew out of it.

The solution to this is obviously... well. just get better at it. Explore experimenting with it. Broaden your horizons. I have literally studied specifically character design professionally and if people would like specific tips or advice I'd be happy to oblige. For pjo fandom my number one suggestion would be the silhouette trick - if you translate the design into silhouette it should still be clear who the character is. For example, here's my lineup of the Seven silhouetted:

This isn't even a great example (i could stand to push the designs further and their poses aren't ideal for this exercise) but you can STILL tell who is who. Beyond anything else if you can vary their silhouettes to be distinct enough then you're doing great.

Surprised and distraught that I haven’t found a TOA / PJO superhero au where Apollo is an incredibly campy and Evil™️ supervillain! He’s got the presentation™️ he’s got the Standards of treating kids nicely he’s got the people skills to have connections and actually pose a threat he’s got the stubborn will to somehow always make it out he’s got the mentally ill undiagnosed with unhealthy coping mechanisms divorced father of 6 energy.

y’know like give me a scene of him being confused at how his kids figured out his identity & cut to him laughing maniacally & evilly in costume with a comical transition to him laughing maniacally & evilly at home serving dinner to his kids & giving them cookies. give me a bit where someone asks him what his job is and he says ‘ahahahoho… surgery… eheheheheh… 👏👏 I LOVE ORGANS!!! 🌩️(ominous thunder)🌩️’ but he was actually a surgeon with a medical degree and he loves medicine he just had to quit bc the hours weren’t working with his 6 kids. and the being lame and obvious about certain secrets so people don’t look for the real stuff.
