LBC CN Server (Empire Event – Alkaid)

I'll probably reserve any character analysis until after I've read the card (was waiting to finish the event story), but bravo from me for that event story. I really enjoyed it and I wasn't expecting that kind of framing.

Spoilers below the read more.

So the whole story is framed as a what-if scenario where PL and MC got to grow up together and be childhood sweethearts. The setting of the story and their backgrounds is a bit of a mishmash of mental data taken from both of them and merged together. There was a brief scene from what looked like the card story as a "why" they did it but I'll reserve any thoughts on that until I've read the card story. Also I'm still processing and definitely want to reread the event story asdfhfhfhxgdbhcj

They went into this simulation without their memories of their "previous" lives so it played out as though they had actually had the past and background that they did in the simulation. Up to and including PL attempting a very Alkaid-esque sacrifice for the greater good. Which I feel the need to add culminated in MC strangling and knocking him out so thank you writers for fulfilling our need to commit violence on this man /hj. But anyway him attempting to sacrifice his freedom and self and planning to go serve the alien civilization that conquered earth so he can ask for it as his territory is just absolutely such an Alkaid plan that it really shows how similar PL is to his counterparts. He still has that self-sacrificing nature deep down. It's just buried under the empire trauma training.

Overall not that angsty once you get out of the simulation. He even makes a somewhat sweet offer of letting her come work for him if she wanted to try what she saw in the simulation of protecting her homeworld from the inside of the empire. Even offers to forge all necessary documents for her using his authority. So, it was sweet coming from him. He's done with the whole "capturing the traveller" business it seems. I think he well and truly sees her as an equal now.

I think overall the story was a stepping stone. Like it wasn't a whole lot of major reveals or major, major character development like Tidal Disruption was. MC had to get caught up on what the audience already knew from the PL SR. And the story probably just needed to establish more that he and MC have a good relationship now and how similar PL really is to his counterparts. Looking forward to reading the card story later.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa also the scene for this is so good. Right amount of fluff and heavy story beats.

I'm wondering if we're gonna get a "it's been PL the whole time and earth alkaid's been dead since the story started" by the end and earthkaid never got control of his body back. Or maybe earthkaid cut a deal with PL where PL gets to take control of his body whenever he needs to in exchange for safety for MC or something. Could see earthkaid doing that.

I am barely not losing it laughing at the whole "linking consciousness/spirits through the mecha" because all I can think of his how down bad for MC PL is and him choosing her for this. Like yes showcase how obsessed you are even more.

Since they're kinda just dropping us into the story with no set up I do wonder what the end framing is gonna be to link this in to the overall story for the empire.

the ‘kind character snapping’ trope has been co-opted by too many people who don’t understand it fundamentally. you can’t have your character actively think of themselves as that kind of person bc that makes it like bragging. ‘you wouldn’t like me when i’m angry 😡’ ’no more mister nice guy 😈’ ’demons run when a good man goes to war 👿’ ’honestly i scare myself sometimes 😰’ WROOOOOONG. those are all threats. first off a truly kind character should be humble and not even consider kindness a thing of theirs. and second off please. if they’re truly gentle they should be ashamed of the very thought of their own wrath and not like openly talk about it. yeah i bet they do scare themselves and others when they finally get pushed too far but like don’t have them say or consciously think that without shame… it should be like a tragic thing that happens to them against their will and not like an alter ego they’ve been gleefully looking for an excuse to slip into

Fam, be careful with your time online. I highly recommend sinking some time and energy into offline pursuits.

Try: knitting or crochet; gentle movement, stretching, walking if you can; playing a musical instrument, whether it's piano or penny whistle; and especially reading.

I do not mean performative BookTok reading that we do for likes because our neurotransmitters have been nerfed by modern life.

I mean actual reading that we do for ourselves alone.

If reading is hard, if attention or energy or memory are operating at a deficit, I get it. Nevertheless, please try. If you notice you're skipping across big chunks of text like a river stone, if you can't finish a paragraph, slow down, pronounce the words out loud. Stop sometimes and ask yourself what you just read. Explain the story or article or poem to your blorbo or your cat or a stuffed animal.

If your head feels scrambled up, no judgment. We may have incredibly intractable neurochemical reasons that this is hard. Just tell the blorbo, "That's hilarious, I don't remember any of what I just read. Let's read it again, together."

(Please don't ask A.I. to do this for you. Please. It's your right to read and think about it your own way. A.I. doesn't actually understand anything. Please don't assume it will guide you safely through this next weird phase of our human culture.)

If reading longform, offline, makes you feel bored or anxious, be gentle and patient with yourself. Start with stories you remember well, reliable sources of well-being. But please know you will need to put some backbone into it in the long run.

I think we are going to need to rebuild our ability to think, to process experience. This will be an unsupported activity. In fact, most of the really powerful cultural forces are making it very hard for us to notice, feel, perceive, or think clearly.

Not sure what, but something's happened quite recently that is making this situation much worse, some kind of tipping point.
