The OpenSSL Heart Bleed issue
The recent OpenSSL "Heart Bleed" incident reminds me of a place crash. Each time one happens, people grief over how it should not have happened and what disastrous consequences it brought. Few realize that such incidents are inputs to making air transportation yet safer so that similar incidents would never happen again. It's the same with OpenSSL. A large security breach was found and was mended, so that future OpenSSL versions would be more crack-proof. Moreover, it's safe to say that non-compromised code of OpenSSL is also undergoing a strict inspection. And finally: this bug was introduced quite recently while the TLS/SSL protocol itself is a couple of decades old. Putting distrust in cryptography is hysteria, and one should avoid it. The HTTPS is NOT broken! What happened is that a recent version of OpenSSL received a piece of code where the committer forgot, that user input should never be trusted.
