i think my fundamental disconnect (confusion, almost!) with people who are really insistent that you shouldnt read books, watch movies, listen to music, etc made by bad people, is that i like.....care about art? this is a perspective that only makes sense if, on some level, art is just Not a Big Deal. and i mean. there is some objective sense in which art is not a big deal! youre allowed to not care about art. but i dont think you should insist other people shouldnt care about art

tbh I do still think of California as a sort of otherworld. I know everybody shits on it, there's fire and traffic and "S*licon V*lley" and so on.

But a part of me will always see a Mediterranean neverland tiled for thousands of miles in every direction with modernist university buildings full of late-20th-century academics working on very exciting stuff. They all look somewhat like Jacob Bronowski.

In the uttermost West, beneath the film grain, the sun sets on the golden gates of a Pacific world, on science fiction writers and beautiful, racially diverse neo-hippies driving down the beach. They talk of quantum shamans and vibrations and it's all nonthreatening, all a bit Douglas Adams, not at all serious, and maybe...

In California, I dream, there are young and old women who believe in dolphins. I used to believe in dolphins.

i mean, the big mistake of the Bush admin was expecting to find those weapons of mass destruction they made up. the real trick is to just claim they exist and then blow the facility where you claim they're located off the map. now we all agree they're not there anymore.

Like I said: Republicans are mindless fucking idiots who don’t know anything and will change their opinions instantly when instructed to. In the span of one single week, their opinion shifts by 40-45 percentage points. They went from 23/53 approve to-disapprove ratio of getting involved, to 68/13 approval of the strikes.
