Evaluation
Tumblr media
For the animation, the first step was to trial and create a character. As well as trialing them with and in shapes. I drew inspiration from attack on titan characters for one of them, with the idea of having it break out of a glass cube, and also had the idea of him rolling around in a sphere as if he's spinning it form the inside. The design is very biomechanic
My other idea was doing a guy who would drive a car around a circle like a hamster wheel, I took some inspiration gta vice city, giving him a sleazy suit
Tumblr media
This is me doing the front and back perspectives of the character. I only managed the front and the back, and I found that I need to practice back perspectives on characters more.
Tumblr media
Just a sketch of the character I did digitally, making some changes and also using it as an excuse to practice drawing folded arms.
Tumblr media
This was the silhouette I used to draw my character over, trying to fit them nicely into the ball and make it look right. I found that I was unable to fit the hands well, so I made the character press it's forearms on the edge instead.
Tumblr media
This was the character I drew in the sphere, cutting down on details to focus on the motion of it spinning in the ball. Features I also cut down on were were it's hair, and other muscle groups. With the idea I had in mind for it's motion, the more details I added, the harder it would've been to blur all the features.
Tumblr media
This is the first frame of motion, using another layer of the same character to overlap, a technique found in animation all over, when there's a fast motion, one of the transition phases will sometimes include a distorted or modified version of the previous frame within the new one, depending on the type of movement and speed that it's trying to convey.
Tumblr media
When the ball is moving fast, I added more lines and also distorted the character by making two close together, then added some white speed marks on the left, to make it look like it was heading right fast.
All in all I think I successfully created a sense of momentum within the ball.

Starting off with a this flat disk at 500 radius, using the sculpting tool to shape and pull terrain into it
Tumblr media
Once the terrain was made, I retopoligize in order to have the mesh spread more evenlym triangulating it, hardening the edge before reducing it for the low poly look
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For colouring, I assigned new material and selected the area to colour them. For the water I made another disk at the same radius, coloured it and made it transparent. I had a lot of issues with colouring and using the software to my intended purposes.
Tumblr media
To add trees, I made two tree models, one big one from a previous session, and another small one to cover the landscape. These trees were then implemented through mash, able to import and create variations of the assets. It's great for placing the same model with variety, able to set a threshold for size and tilt so each placement is different.

Finally, I just made a sphere, selected half of it and made it transparent with blinn (for shine), tinting it a very light blue to give the look of glass.

Second Heart
For the second heart I was going for a more complicated design and I would be doing a blanket stitch. I drew the shape on card and cut out a template to draw over as both sides would need to be evenly matched for it to work. Once both were cut out I then made sure they were evenly matched and trimmed before making a hidden set in between the layers.
Tumblr media
The blanket stitch was relatively easy as long as I was going slowly, with the added step of having to loop the thread before you pulled, again it was a bit messy in places but it kept improving as I carried on. I also like the look of black thread on red heart.
Tumblr media
All that was left was just to stuff it, shoving the stuffing in with a wooden stick, before sewing it up and struggling with the exit.
Tumblr media
Glued some wires and a battery piece to make it look more robotic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Working on the robot frame, we decided on covering it in string instead

Sewing
This heart was the test run, I cut two pieces out and left a fingers worth of space around the guide lines, as I was doing a running stitch. This was my first time sewing in years so I wanted to do a simpler heart design first just to see how I got on.
Tumblr media
The pins held both pieces of fabric together and allowed me to trace the guideline better, my stitch was a bit messy in places but I picked it up as I went along.

Old Runescape
The first place my mind goes to when I think of low poly environments is old school runescape
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's an old game that has stood the test of time, and a lot of that is due to the charm that comes with a game like this.

Making a Pokeball in Maya proved to be easier than expected, Maya isn't a very beginner friendly program, but with the help of a guide it was easier to navigate. I'm more comfortable with how to work with maya in perparation for making the low poly landscape.
