Bystander Intervention Training

so, the US just attacked Iran, and that is fucking terrible. Something we all need to think about right now is how we can stop the harassment and violence against Muslims and Arabs in the US that got so much worse in the early 2000s from happening again to people now.

To that end, I wanted to share some resources on Bystander Intervention. One of the biggest things I learned from training like this is that there are many ways to intervene, and they don't all involve putting yourself in front of the person who may harm you or others. It's ok if you feel intimidated by that because there are more ways to help! And once you do the training, it might not be so scary.

Right to Be has Bystander trainings based on the 5Ds of Bystander Intervention (Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct). The trainings are free!! sign up here.

I took one of their trainings a few years ago (when the org was called Hollaback!) and it was really very good, they have trainings at multiple levels and focused on various topics. They also partner with other orgs to focus on specific issues (like anti-AAPI harassment and with CAIR Chicago for anti-Muslim harassment, etc.).

Calling someone privileged for staying quiet might be one of the most short-sighted things you can do. You don’t know their life, their history, or what they’re carrying. Maybe silence is survival. Maybe they’re protecting something you’ll never see. But to you, if they’re not speaking your language, they’re the enemy. That alone says everything.

You say there are many valid ways to show up, then immediately split people into categories. Those who help your narrative, and those you assume are lazy or selfish. Like you get to decide who cares based on how loudly they post.

You talk about peace and justice, but operate through shame and fear. You say you want change, but punish anyone who hesitates, who speaks differently, who takes a second to think. You ask for empathy while giving none. You say listen, but only if people agree with you.

It’s not activism. It’s performance. It’s guilt tactics and buzzwords wrapped in fake moral authority. You say educate, but mean obey. You say you are anti-oppression, but what you really want is power. Your turn to control who speaks and who gets burned.

One mistake, and someone is gone. One pause, and they are labeled a threat. No room for growth. No space for questions. You don’t build movements. You build fear.

And here’s the part you will pretend not to hear. This is the same playbook you claimed to hate. The black-and-white thinking. The you are with us or against us mindset. The emotional manipulation.
