No video game to me will ever top going into Apollo Justice completely blind and immediately looking at Kristoph Gavin and genuinely trusting him with my whole chest. The experience I had with 4-1 will never be replicated. I truly got to understand Apollo in the hour I was playing it.

Phoenix is such a interesting protagonist, because at first he seems like a classic “Im gonna solve everything with the power of belief!” Protagonist, but when you actually play the games it becomes very clear that he is a lot more than that, I don’t see why people complain about him in AA4 because to me it seems like a very natural extension of what we see in the mainline series (and how he looks to people who don’t get a look into his thoughts)

(This is also why it’s so fun to pair him with Kristoph, cus Kris is someone who very easily counters his character, which makes for some interesting interactions and relationship between them)

This is such a real take, anon. I also feel like Phoenix's character as it is actually portrayed is much more complex than is commonly understood. He's really never been lawful good - maybe in his younger years, but his final allegiance is to the truth. And he'll do whatever it takes to get to it, including steal shit from crime scenes, probe peoples' darkest secrets, and have a surprisingly dark sense of humor at times! His internal monologue is also critical of others (in a funny way). And in AA4, it definitely seems to show that Phoenix can be just as much of an over-the-top character as any other AA character. Instead of being just the everyman, he becomes more of a shadowy figure working behind the scenes to manipulate outcomes to his own ends (including manipulating Apollo).

But he also deeply cares about his loved ones, too.

And, Krisnix to me is so interesting because of the similarities between Phoenix and Kristoph! They both seem dependent on each other almost as a way of understanding each other's and their own relationship to the law. Like, can Kristoph really prove himself as a shining example of a lawyer if Phoenix isn't there to be his punching bag (kind of an example of wanting to pose with the "ugly friend" to show yourself as more attractive)? Can Phoenix really claim to be working towards the truth if Kristoph doesn't show him where the gaps in the legal system really lie? They're so complicated.

Based on your fic, The Wings Of Icarus, you think if Ted actually killed Apollo, or did significantly worse damage, Phoenix would’ve genuinely considered or even committed murder over it? In the fic he said he’d struggled with the desire to kill him…But if Ted had done what was suggested, would he still be struggling or would he be acting upon it?

This is a really interesting question!

So in the games, there are multiple instances where Phoenix has reacted very strongly to someone he cares about being threatened. This includes the aggression he has towards Manfred von Karma over what happened with Edgeworth, but usually the person that Phoenix needs to protect is Maya (in no small part due to what happened to Mia and Phoenix's guilt over it - Godot is quick to point this guilt out in Bridge to the Turnabout)

For example, Phoenix breaks down a locked and sturdy door at Matt Engarde's residence where Maya was held captive, thinking she is still in there:

Phoenix isn't above reacting with brute strength when the situation calls for it.

That's one example. But then, there's this idea of vengeance that I was kind of touching upon in my fic, where Phoenix has to deal with what Tonate did to Apollo (even after Apollo was already grievously injured and hurting after the courtroom explosion)

We do see glimpses of how Phoenix copes with feelings of wanting to get revenge. (Layton v. Wright spoiler incoming!) While he is not an especially violent person, look how he reacts to Zacharias Barnham in Layton v. Wright after Maya appears to be killed:

Now, we know Phoenix is no fan of Ted Tonate.

Had Tonate caused worse injuries or death to Apollo... what would Phoenix do? I think he would struggle with the rage that would follow, for sure. Personally I don't think Phoenix is capable of becoming a premeditated murderer or murderer of any kind, but that doesn't mean he doesn't struggle with anger and grief. What happened with Mia traumatized him, and because of this, he can tend to overreact when someone he cares about is in trouble. It would be interesting to explore that angle a bit more.
