DARK STARTERS - accepting.
His body hurts. He can hardly open his eyes, blood beginning to dry and crust over them, but he forces them open anyways to look at himself. The wreckage around him seems far away, the sound muffled, and it is only when his eyes spot the rod sticking through his side that it comes crashing down. It feels as if someone has let go of the pause button and everything rushes forward; the noise (screaming, screaming, silence), the blistering pain, the feeling of blood on his hands and the knowledge that it is his. Sam doesn’t remember the crash, but it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need to remember because soon he won’t remember anything. Soon, he’ll cease to exist. There’s comfort in that. The ground rumbles and it causes him to scream out in pain as the rod vibrates inside of him. It feels like his guts have been twisted around, and he’s fairly certain that he can’t feel his legs. Quick breathes calm him long enough to look up ahead of him, and then all air leaves.Ghidorah. King Ghidorah. The beast stands before him, one head coming down to peer at the wreckage and Sam has no hope that he will be hidden away from it. He hadn’t wanted to die (no one does) but bleeding out at least sounded blissful compared to the clashing of teeth. Death will come either way though, and it is the want for it to be quick that he speaks.“Kill me. KILL ME.”

💀 {For Emma!}
DARK STARTERS - accepting.
“Let me go! Please, please let me go.”He hates the way his voice trembles, how fearful it is, but more than that, he hates the way the mercenaries laugh because it proves what he knows is true: he’s not getting out of here alive. He’s surprised they even bothered with bringing him in, but Sam is beginning to think that it would have been better if they had instead shot him on sight.Tied to a steel chair with hands and legs bound, Sam nervously looks around the place; the walls are made of steel, tech on a far wall with a table ahead of it set up with various computers. This must be one of the underground bunkers that Monarch had set up years ago. He leans forward, trying to get a closer look at what’s on the table. Standard military issue laptops, routers, and… Is that the ORCA? If that’s here than… His head turns to the sound of a door opening, and the mercenaries quiet when she enters the room. Sam feels like he can’t breath the moment he spots Emma Russell, and while he tries to stay calm, his hands tug viciously at the restraints.“E-Emma? What’s going on?” he asks, confused to see her roaming freely. Mark’s voice rang in his head; she pulled the trigger. He hadn’t believed Foster, hadn’t wanted to believe her husband either, but seeing her here, in the flesh, free… It was hard to know what to think. Was she the reason he was still alive? Was she really in control of all of this?

DARK STARTERS - accepting.
Sam had always believed Serizawa and Graham when they spoke about the natural balance that the Titan’s brought. Not only did it bring some sort of comfort, but there was proof of it; the regrowth where ever they went, the restoration of a natural environment. These were things that he could see, that science could prove. He also believed the two Doctor’s when they said that some Titan’s were protectors, while others were destroyers, and that when the time came, these protectors would do what they could to save the Earth. He truly believed that - not because of any sort of evidence, but because he had to believe it to keep what sanity he had. But there is a difference between believing it and being confronted one on one, or… face to face with it.The cave had once been dark, but now it glowed with her appearance, wings fluttering with luminescent light that made the shadows dance. The soft chittering was its own music, echoing off the rocky walls of the place that she had made her home. Mothra. Queen of the Monsters. Sam stilled in front of her. Nothing existed anymore except this moment; the universe mattered not when faced with the beauty that was the Titan. He had never seen anything like her, had never even imagined something so strangely beautiful. And yet he knew better than to believe that that beauty did not hold power. When he feels that he has grabbed her attention, he falls to his knees - it is all he can do, like a forgotten instinct. Yet when she moves closer, when the chittering increases in volume, fear takes hold, and that is what makes him cower. She’s going to kill me, he thinks, she’s going to eat me or put me in a web and let me starve. That’s what’s going to happen to me, oh God. He closes his eyes tight, and while he is scared, there is no instinct to run, no want for it. If this is how he dies, than so be it - the image of the Queen was enough to make him accept such a fate.“Just get it over with. Don’t drag this out any longer…”

DARK STARTERS - accepting.
It’s one thing to see a Titan when there’s something tangible between you, like the metal frame of a plane or a TV screen. Don’t give him wrong, they’re still terrifying and he can’t count the amount of close calls that he’s had where that barrier has almost been torn away. What he can count though is that amount that it has; like right now.Being around these creatures, physically, no sort of object in between you and it, is a whole different experience. The moment he wakes up on the hot concrete and looks up to see Rodan, he enters a state of delirium. The sight is hellish; buildings burn around the Titan, scorching the ground bellow. He can see bodies turn to ash as the bird-like creature approaches, and for a moment, all he can do is lay and watch and pray. But the moment that Rodan’s birdy eyes land on Sam, the adrenaline kicks in.He’s up and running faster than anyone on his highschool’s track team, and not only would he certainly win first prize, but he’d be breaking records too. Running through buildings, he can only glance back to see if they’ve fallen behind him, if the heat has eaten the bodies behind up just like it threatens him. He’s babbling non-coherently as he runs, mind spitting out whatever words it can to process what is happening - but it’s hard to process anything when there’s a fucking burnt rotisserie chicken chasing after you.“HOLY FUCK!” he screams as the building he’s in begins to crumble; there’s no time for rest, even as his legs cramp, even when he falls back down and crawls. It’s only when he looks back at Rodan that the fear drives him into a crazed mania and he laughs. It cracks out of him, dry and pitching high, and when rubble falls beside him, he screams. “I’ll KILL you, I swear to God, I’ll FUCKING KILL YOU!”

“I know. I saw it happen. At least…the beginning of it.” Emma remarked. She could still replay those events in her mind like they had just happened but minutes ago. Seeing as Ghidorah and Godzilla did battle against each other like she knew they would…but she hadn’t expected a weapon of such a magnitude to strike them. That’s when everything had taken a turn for the worse. She and Alan could only watch from the monitors as Ghidorah awoken the other titans within rapid succession, something she had aimed to greatly avert. Within a matter of seconds all of her planning and careful consideration came crashing down all because of him. It made her gut twist and turn out of disgust. She should have never released him. But that was then and this is now…and now she has to pay for her crimes.
Brows furrowed as she gave him a questionable glance. “The hollow earth theory? You’re kidding, right?” She couldn’t believe that Stanton was right. Then again, the thought of alien life out in the cosmos was once considered silly and yet here they were. So many theories were being confirmed in such a short amount of time.
“…….” He had to manual set of a nuke? Dear god. Emma couldn’t imagine that. A hand covered her tired eyes as she shook her head. This was all too much to take in. Why couldn’t they have just stayed at a monarch bunker like she had hoped they would? Sadly, it was a fools dream. She knew the two of them and if anything they’d be out in the forefront trying to help. Doing so had cost them their lives…
“I think…I think I’ve heard enough, Sam. Could you leave please? I’d appreciate that.” Her tone wasn’t aggressive. More hollow if anything. “I can only handle so much.”
“It’s quite remarkable, actually. Stanton wants to explore the theory more with drones to see what else is hidden away, but right now Monarch’s studying the after effects of the Titans and trying to calm the public.” There’s a hint of a smile, “The government has certainly changed it’s tune. Doesn’t look like Monarch will be shutting down anytime soon.” The victory was hollow without Graham and Serizawa at the forefront, however. Having lost the two directors, there was a period where Sam had feared that the sector would crumble in on itself. Dr. Chen stepped forward as new director quickly though, and Mark had kept on beside her. It was strange, being the only one left. It felt wrong. He should’ve died with too. There is only so much good though. In the end, there is far too much pain and suffering happening for it to be wiped clean. Sam knows that far too well, and while he stands there for a moment, staring at Emma and trying to figure out if there is anything he can do, he realizes that there isn’t - that none of his actions will ever change what has been done. So, with a nod, Sam backs up a step, before turning around and walking back down the hallway to take the elevator out; his steps echoing of the walls, steady, even.

“Understandably.” She remarked at the comment regarding Foster. Emma was well aware of the people who died to fight King Ghidorah and others. Many of them she probably had conversations with before these events took place.
She visibly tenses at the mention of Mark and Madison. A part of her wanted to be truly dead so neither of them could see her like this. Whatever opinion they had of her now would no doubt sink even lower. Hands came over her face as she massaged her temples. She just wanted to rest. To forget everything even if it was brief.
Emma perked up, ever so slightly, as Sam went on to explain the effects. It was just as she had predicted and calculated. The titans ancient radiation was restoring the world back. Mega forests would grow within the destroyed cities and bring back both old and new fauna. Food would be plentiful for quite a time. At least that was one positive in a sea of atrocities. “Just as I thought.” A ghost of a smile managed to creep upon her face. It quickly vanished however.
The scientist turned her gaze towards Sam when he brought up both Graham and Serizawa. “…Both of them?” She looked truly hurt by this newfound knowledge. Out of everyone she had hoped that both Graham and Serizawa would’ve made their way to a monarch bunker at some point to survive all of this. They were the highest ranking members after all. But…they were both dead. The two that came to her and Mark to hire them into Monarch.
A shaky breath parted from her lips as she pressed her back against the wall. “I suppose I was going to find out one way or another.” She remarked. “Do…Do they know what killed Serizawa?”
Sam couldn’t help but feel pleased that he had given her some sort of happiness, no matter how minor it was. After all, she had been right; more than just right. The effects were astounding, and the rate at which everything was occurring would have been inconceivable had they not been seeing it through their own eyes. The cities might have been abandoned by humans, but plant and animal life flourished in the radioactivity. He just wished she could see it herself. Somehow. Swallowing, he looks at the ground. It’s still hard to believe that they’re both gone. He finds himself expecting to see Graham around every corner with that coy smile, to spot Serizawa flipping through his journal obsessively, working in new details and notes on every ink-filled page. At times, when he hasn’t slept (which was far more often now), he swore he saw their ghost in the halls - and so he often locked his doors and hid under the covers. “The military decided to try and take down both King Ghidorah and Godzilla when they were fighting on the coast of Mexico. They sent some sort of oxygen destroyer and hit the two - except Ghidorah didn’t die. But Godzilla...” he trails off, looking at an empty wall as if it holds all the answers. “I don’t know all the details. We decided to split up; half of us went to where Ghidorah was to try and draw him back to the open sea while the others went after Godzilla with nuclear bombs to revive him. Mark, Chen, Serizawa... They went with that secondary team. Something... happened. You know that empty Earth theory Stanton was always spouting? It lead them to him and what Stanton is insisting is the lost city of Atlantis. On the way down, the submarines weapon systems malfunctioned and Serizawa had to manual set off the nuke.” A pause. He tries to imagine it, to see Serizawa’s face and the acceptance that he would be giving his life for the mighty Titan’s. Sam could almost see it, but the moment it started to come into clarity, that bomb that the doctor had surely carried close went off, and all Sam could see was darkness.

A genuine glare is thrown towards Sam at his remark. She hardly believed him. The man says that now after everything was done but in the heat of the moment? He would have been no different than Mark or Dr. Serizawa. Emma knew it to be true. She doesn’t interrupt him however. Emma doesn’t have the energy for that right now. She was already tired from well…everything.
Brows knitted together as he abruptly stopped himself from finishing that statement. It cut into her, it truly did. Sam really had been for her throughout the years. Whether it was helping with the orca device or simply doing reports and working on files. Lips twitched before descending into a frown as she turned away from him. She heard what he said but it didn’t matter. Not now or anymore.
“I thought I was dead too.” An exhausted chuckle parted from her lips before falling silent. “I looked Ghidorah in the eyes before Godzilla melted everything around us. By all accounts I should be dead as could be.” And yet here she was.
“As well as an almost world-ending criminal can be, I suppose.” Emma replied with her back facing him. “The only reason the glass wall is here is probably to keep those that really want to strangle me to death out. I can only imagine how many families I’ve…torn apart. Whether by my initial plan or because of him.” For some reason she started laughing. Maybe it was because it was all too much for her. She just…wanted to break down and rest. Maybe rest until her heart stopped or just something.
“It’s funny really. I calculated it. After setting everything up I started doing the numbers. Seeing how much damage waking each and every titan up would cause if my plan had worked.” Emma once again fell silent as the regret washed over her.
“Over twenty three million. Though I guess Mark was right. Not everything is all math…” Because now that number far exceeded her calculations. Just how many had died from King Ghidorah’s reign?
Had she thrown such a look at him before all of his, Sam would have visibly flinched - he almost did now. Yet he manages to hold himself off, listening to her words. He wonders briefly just how much she knows - the death of millions of people was something that anyone could have figured out when the Titans came out from hibernation, but had she been told anything else? Did she deserve to be told anything else? He thinks for a moment, chewing on the inside of his cheek and taking a few steps closer. Then he speaks. “Foster hates you. A lot of good people died while fighting King Ghidorah on her command. It was hard to watch. Dr. Chen and Dr. Stanton both seem to feel the same way. Mark and Madison both still think you’re dead.” A pause. “But I’m sure they’ll figure it out soon that you’re alive. Madison will, at least. She’s still as smart as ever.” “You were right about the Titan’s being the key to restoring Earth. We lost a lot of cities, but it’s just like San Francisco. Plants that went extinct years ago are growing in those cities. Hell, even Titan dung has proved to be useful as a source of energy.” He chuckles, but it’s hollow - there’s no joy to be found in the weak attempt at a joke. Sam stops speaking, looks at her for a reaction. He wants her to know, even if no one else does. She might’ve tried to end the Earth, but she had also tried to save it, and it had been her sacrifice that had gave Godzilla enough time to get back on his feet. “...Graham and Serizawa are dead. I don’t know if you’ve figured that out or if you just assumed that they hated you too much to come and see you, or... whatever. They’re both gone. Graham didn’t survive at Outpost 32 and... Mark brought me back Serizawa’s journal. Gave it to me.”

She knew it had been useless but Emma still tried. She didn’t want him to see her like this. But now she had no choice in the matter. He could do whatever he pleased because he was the one who was free. He could come and go for hours and Emma would be stuck in the same place from now till then. This is probably where she’ll be for the rest of her life. Locked away for what she’s done and caused.
Her brows furrow as she turns towards him. She almost looks angry. Almost. “Because if I had told anyone here in Monarch, they would have put a bullet through my brain faster than I could say wait. And don’t tell me they wouldn’t because they would. Being the most intelligent scientist in multiple fields wouldn’t be enough to save someone if they said they had the mere idea to commit world-wide devastation…even if the results were proven to be beneficial. There’s always that first gut reaction. One that could’ve gotten me killed in a heartbeat.”
She had gotten up now, looking directly at Sam. Deserved to know why? Left in the dark? Why couldn’t he just use his brain and figure it all out himself? It was simple. Very simple actually. And yet she was explaining it to him. Most likely as a means of finally getting it off of her chest. She had been holding it in for years now.
Shoulders drooped as she looked down to her cuffs. They weren’t taking any chances with her it seems. Even behind the most powerful glass they still kept her cuffed.
“I couldn’t even go to Dr. Serizawa and Vivienne about this. The brilliant man and woman who hired me. But I knew how they’d react. Serizawa proved that during our little chat on the Argo. I had to do this by myself. Jonah was just a means to keep my true involvement a secret. Well…until King Ghidorah happened. Happy to get an answer now?”
She slunk her way back to her seat and sat down. As much as she hated this…to finally get all of it off of her chest felt a little good.
There’s some sort of relief in seeing a response from her other than defeat, but that doesn’t stop Sam from feeling like he’s going to be sick. He’s not a stupid man - he wouldn’t be here if he was. No, he’s smart, but when it comes to things like this, connections to others have always felt foreign. So while part of him knows that what she says is true, that Monarch would have taken the mere joke of such a thing as a threat, he still can’t accept it. He swallows thickly and shakes his head, and if he hadn’t come in looking like a kicked puppy he certainly looked like one now. “Not me. Maybe I wouldn’t have accepted the idea, but we could have talked it through, we could have figured something else out.” He’s speaking fast now, as if he’s scared she’ll interrupt him before he can get the words out, as if he’ll never have the chance to say them again, “Jesus Christ, Emma, I’ve always been here for you! With everything you did, I was there supporting you. I-I trusted you, I defended you! For fuck’s sake, I lov-” Sam cuts himself off with a deep breath in, hand going up to cover his mouth as he looks anywhere but at her, eyes darting across the room. His arm falls back down limply to his side, the other gripping his hip as if it can provide some sort of stability. As if the world hasn’t already been turned upside down. “I thought you were dead. We all did. And now you’re here, locked away. It’s just... It’s too much to take in. All of it.” He looks at her again, the silence weighing heavily for a moment before he breaks it. “How are you being treated down here?”

Her head was a whirling mess. It had been a mess ever since Ghidorah had taken control from her and reveled what he truly was to the world. Now here she sat, cuffed and defeated, like a criminal. She was far worse than any criminal however. Emma was a monster. A monster that had no right to still be alive and yet…here she was. Was it cruel fate? Or irony? The scientist couldn’t decide.
She could feel her blood run cold as she heard Sam’s voice. Emma honestly expected no one to come down here. She didn’t want anyone to come down and see her like this. One of Monarch’s finest if not the smartest scientist it had in its arsenal reduced…to this.
Emma didn’t immediately look towards him. Instead she kept in her hunkered position with her head low. Eyes closed as she sighed before slowly positioning herself up. Tired and broken eyes glanced over to the man. There was no joy, no happiness. Only regret and shame.
“Sam…you shouldn’t be down here.” So he couldn’t see her like this.
The scientist could only imagine what thoughts were running in his head. Perhaps he came to spat slurs and curses at her for the deaths she had indirectly and directly caused? He wouldn’t have been the first nor the last. Not that it wasn’t undeserved. She expected it…but it still hurt.
“Go back up. You have more important matters to handle.”
There’s a bitter taste that coats the back of his throat when she looks at him with such empty eyes. It had been those same eyes that had convinced him to join Monarch; full of hope and excitement for the changes that she (that they) would bring. The betterment of the world, the understanding coexistence between Titan and human that seemed unrealistic after the attacks of 2014. It was those eyes that had made him believe though, made his outlook of fear turn into that of faith. He didn’t want to see her like this. But he had to. “Don’t.” he speaks, head shaking from side to side, and while there’s force behind the word, his voice is still soft. “Don’t tell me what I need to do. Not now.” He wants to be angry. He wants the rage to fill his veins and make him shake and scream and hit the glass that separates them. Sam can almost imagine it; those eyes widening with something (fear? understanding?), his fist hitting the glass and while it won’t break, the skin on his knuckles will. The adrenaline coursing through and replacing pain with energy, with action. But the feeling doesn’t come, the anger never replacing the empty pit that has made its place in his heart. “I want to know why.” he says after taking a deep breath, “I-I deserve to know why. Why you didn’t come to me. Why you left me in the dark. Why you went to Jonah instead of me.”

It had been hard to accept the mere idea that Emma would be behind such a horrible event. Hard to accept that she would be willing to sacrifice the lives of so many, that her will had twisted itself into something monstrous. Even now, Sam held some sort of doubt that it had all been her doing - his faith in her was far too strong. Yet it was her doing, and when everyone thought she was dead, he had mourned. He had tried to accept that she was gone. So hearing that she was alive, locked up like some sort of unknown prisoner, had s h a t t e r e d the small amount of acceptance he had mustered. I shouldn’t be here, was his first thought when he entered the lower levels where Emma was held. Like a mantra, repeating itself; I shouldn’t be here. Yet his steps continued, echoing off of the walls, steady, even. When he finally finds her whatever words he planned to say dry up in his throat and choke him. She looks so broken. So unlike the strong, fierce woman who had brought him into Monarch. “Emma...” he whispers, but it feels like he’s screamed it the way it bounces the air.

@electronicwhiz
She hated this. Hated how silent everyone was as she was restrained and placed away. The base she use to consider as a second home would now become her prison. Though she couldn’t blame them. Emma couldn’t blame anyone because of what her actions had led too.
Ghidorah had damaged so much. So much more than she had ever intended too. Cities would have been hit, yes but at least with her in control of the titans they would have left and allowed life to regrow itself. To benefit the remaining humans and countless generations down the line.
That dreaded beast would have destroyed everything. The cities, the nations, humanity to its very last numbers. And it had all happened because of her. Her head hung low as she hunkered over on her bench. If she could ever go back and change this, she would’ve taken it in a heartbeat.
The blood of billions were on her hands now all because of one miscalculated action.

I think it’s interesting that Sam decided to go with the military to distract/draw out King Ghidorah instead of with the rest of his close teammates to ‘revive’ Godzilla. It’s definitely the far more dangerous option between the two, but instead of going the safer route with people that he knows and trusts, he puts himself on the front line.
Another interesting thing is that Mark doesn’t keep Serizawa’s journal, but instead gives it to Sam, someone who he has repeatedly distanced himself from and disrespected the entire movie. He doesn’t keep it for himself, doesn’t give it to Dr. Chen or Dr. Stanton. He gives it to Sam Coleman.
#≏ uwu. (ooc)#i just... UGH#I WISH WE COULD'VE SEEN SO MUCH MORE WITH HIS RELATIONSHIPS TO THE OTHERS#BECAUSE IT'S CLEAR THAT HE MUST HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO SERIZAWA AND MARK SAW THAT AND DECIDED THAT HE DESERVED TO HAVE THAT JOURNAL
