How to make Dirk glasses without use of plexiglass!
Note: Ignore the hugeness of the pictures, I took them with my phone
I was getting ready to finish my Dirk cosplay when I realized this: HOLY FUCK PLEXIGLAS IS FUCKIN’ EXPENSIVE. So instead, I opted to try and make it out of something see through from my side, but not from the outside. The solution? Window tint.
How this method works: We cut out triangles of cardboard and have seeing holes, then tape/glue them over empty frames. Since you can see out of window tint but not in, viewers won’t be able to see the cardboard beneath, but you’ll be able to see outward fairly easily.
Materials necessary:
1. Window film. GILA film works great and you can get a HUGE roll of it for $16. If you go to Home Depot, it’s in the floor section for some reason.
2. Cardboard. It looks like paper in the photo, but it should be durable not to break but thin enough to be cut.
3. Scissors. For cutting. Obviously.
4. A hole puncher.
5. A glasses frame with the lens punched out.
6. Double sided tape, as well as normal tape or hot glue depending on your preference.

Step 1: Cutting the shades
Trace however large you want your shades to be based on your face, but make sure that they can cover the frames completely. You’ll want two of them, preferably the same size for obvious reasons. Make sure that you also cut two pieces of film in the same shape/size as the cardboard.

Step 2: Punch out the eye holes!
Here’s the tricky part. Draw a general guideline of how large the hole should be, then use the hole puncher to punch a circle out of the shades to create an eye hole. Hole punching is easier than trying to jam in scissors without bending or tearing the cardboard. However, do not cut holes in the film. Those will remain whole.

Or, of course, you can use the “fuckall method” like I did and use scissors anyway.

Step 3: Attach the film!
Now we get to attach the film to your triangles! Stick a piece of double-sided tape on as many places as possible on the cardboard and put the film on top. Don’t forget to take off the white back of the film or else you won’t be able to see through it! The tape sticks to the film wonderfully, which is as good as it is bad - as much as it won’t fall off, if you make a mistake, it’s very hard to take off. When I took this picture I actually had to hold it down so it would stop curling!

Step 5: Attaching the shades to the frames!
It gets a little sticky now (pun totally intended) because we have to try to figure out a way to tape down the triangles. What I did was that I taped all around the frames, stuck on the triangles, then taped it in the back just to be sure. You can also try hot gluing it if that’s your forte. Just make sure it’s secure on there!

Final step: Be cool.
What kind of Strider isn’t a winner? No Strider isn’t a winner, and with these glasses, you are definitely a winner. Setting aside my dumb ego, here’s the finished product!

Stay cool, Striders.

Homestuck both genuinely saved my life as a teen [couldn't kill myself, had to find out what happened next] and brought me into the weirdest fucking trauma known to man. What the fuck do you mean I was 14 years old and ERPing with a 32 year old vriska roleplayer.
B33< Homestuck + unsupervised internet…why a time.
