“Not Without my Magic” Episode Review
I know I say this about every episode, but I loved this episode! Elena’s scepter’s malfunctioning finally gets addressed, but honestly not in the way I thought. I guess I was a little like Elena, thinking that the scepter would just be fixed, that it was too important for her to live without. I’m so glad I was wrong because instead we got an amazing episode about Elena overcoming her dependency on magic and finding her courage and identity without it.
The episode cuts straight to the point: Elena’s scepter isn’t working and with Victor and Carla still on the loose, she is freaking out. Practically panicking, she’s feeling powerless and unable to protect her kingdom, which is what’s most important to her. She calls on Mateo to fix it and he suggests she go see Quita Moz. Elena rushes off to Vallestrella without a second thought or even taking a breath. Elena, please calm down.
Cut to these two goof balls getting chased down in Vallestrella. They manage to get away (by trapping themselves in a cave, can’t believe that worked lol). They decide to ask Elena for forgiveness and change their wicked ways, not out of the goodness of their hearts, of course, but because they’re getting really tired XD.
But in all seriousness, I love to see this step in the right direction, even if it comes from selfish motives. I’m honestly surprised to see these two getting redeemed, but happy about it nonetheless.
Yes! Back to the plot that left us on a cliffhanger in “Snow Place Like Home”! Turns out the Delgado family history is a little complicated. Ash (Mommy Delgado) left Victor and Carla to become a Malvaga, but took far longer than expected. Victor was to wait until she came back, but after several years and even searching for her, he and Carla gave up, thinking she was dead. Victor is understandably angry at his wife for abandoning the family, but somehow Ash has the nerve to be angry at HIM. For what? Not waiting until she came back to learn to be a Malvago? For raising their daughter without her? I’m surprised to admit I’m on Victor’s side here.
Although, the best part of this scene was how Ash and Victor pretended to be in love and a happy family just when Carla’s around. It was great comedic timing but also shows how even though they don’t like each other, Carla’s parents love her enough to sacrifice their own feelings (though I’m sure this is going to blow up in their faces sometime soon).
Back in Quita Moz’s den, Elena desperately asks him to repair the scepter, and is distressed to find out that he has to take it to the other sunbirds for help.
“How long? A day? A week? A year?!” “Yeah, it could be any of those.” XD
Poor Elena doesn’t know what to do. Without magic she feels incapable of protecting her kingdom, so Quita Moz gives Elena a powerful crystal tamborita under the promise that she not use it until trained by Mateo. On the one hand, wow, a crystal tamborita is really cool! But on the other hand, we’re all sure Elena’s going to make a mess by trying to use it without training, so…
Unfortunately for Elena (and all of Vallestrella), Cruz and Vestia had been following Elena in an effort to surrender but happened to overhear a certain sunbird oracle mention that his clay jars contain dangerous creatures who can cause chaos. Thinking it’s their chance to release then capture one and be hailed as heroes, double trouble decides to do something very stupid.
It goes about as well as you would think it would. Turns out the creature in the jar is an adorable little jumping Pokemon who SETS EVERYTHING IN SIGHT ON FIRE. Pretty soon the whole jungle’s ablaze. But lucky for them…
Elena to the rescue! She has an idea to use giant lily pads to carry water from a lake to put out the fire and it works like a charm, though not fast enough to keep up with our mischievous little fiery friend.
I want to say I love how this scene really shows Elena’s ingenuity and leadership skills, both of the things she uses to solve problems without magic. At this point in the episode, she does not realize the fire is magically created, she simply looks at the problem and quickly comes up with a workable solution, just like a great leader does. It’s clear that Elena’s insecurity relates to magical problems, in which she feels helpless without powers of her own. I headcanon this is possibly because back before she had powers she was helpless to stop Shuriki from killing her parents and stealing her kingdom. This is why she feels that she needs to be powerful (magically wise) to defeat a magical foe.
Well, hey, would you look at the time? It looks like we’re at the part of the episode where everything falls apart, for the good guys and the bad guys this time XD. Discovering that a magic creature is setting the fires, Elena tries to stop it using the crystal tamborita DESPITE PROMISING NOT TO AND EVEN SKYLAR PROTESTING HER DECISION, and of course it doesn’t work. Meanwhile Cruz and Vestia get themselves caught red-handed trying to “save the day.” Just look at Elena and King Verago’s faces. They are not stupid and having none of this XD.
Elena rushes off, of course, and tries to use the crystal tamborita to stop the creature again. This time she accidentally creates a fire tornado, though. Skylar is rightfully angry and tells her she should have listened. The most beautiful moment come when Elena, knowing he’s right turns away in defeat and frustration, insisting, “without my scepter, I’m powerless.” But Skylar is a true friend. He goes straight from, “how could you?” mode to “you got this and I’m here for you” mode, singing to Elena of everything she’s done without magic until Elena believes in herself again.
I can’t stress how much I adore this song. Seeing Elena so broken breaks me, but I love seeing her insecurities about magical foes and dependency on magic that she’s developed addressed. Plus there’s nothing more beautiful than Skylar literally taking her under his wing and singing words of encouragement. He succeeds in bringing back the old Elena we know and love who believes she can find a way somehow and knows her mission is too important to give up on.
By now fire Pokemon (apparently named Anchimon) has made it to the palace and proceeded to set the whole thing ablaze, but thankfully our girl Elena is back in business. Realizing the creature has been calling for his creator, a sorceress named Chatana, Elena comes up with a plan that even Vestia and Cruz were included in to prove they’re worthy of a second chance. Double trouble leads Anchimon to a waterfall behind which Elena stands with Skylar’s wings spread behind her to look like the winged sorceress, speaking through a shell to call Anchimon into the trap. It was a clever idea and comical to watch and (unlike using magic) it solved the problem with minimal destruction. Bravo, Elena.
While this episode ends happily for Cruz and Vestia (getting accepted back into Vallestrella) and the Delgado family (getting along again–mostly) it is not so for Elena. She just can’t seem to catch a break. Returning to Quita Moz’s den, he drops the bombshell that defeating Shuriki was not her big test to become queen. I was honesty shocked too. Like Elena said, what could be bigger than Shuriki? Naturally Elena is terrified. It’s so sad to watch all of her anxiety that she thought was in the past come flooding back in that moment.
But Elena did learn her lesson from this episode. She returns the crystal tamborita, saying she will have to face her trial with or without magic. Quita Moz is unsurprised (but what can surprise an oracle, am I right?). In the end though, Elena maintains her spark of hope despite the bad news. And with that, I think I’ll just end with this:
“I’ll have something much better by my side… You!”
