I agree with this but I'm getting it more as 'Bad Writing'. The whole Durge timeline is so sloppy and inconsistent that it's just confusing and honestly upsetting. There's no need for it to be all over the place, even if they are trying to make Gortash look to be a certain way, his three different versions of events are just bad writing imo.
Gortash didn't GIVE her the netherstone, she took it from Durge after she merked them. Ketheric and Gortash were very much not in on the usurping because both complained about it. Gortash when you talk to him, and in his Memoirs note.
Is he trying to say he allowed her to keep the stone? They needed a third anyway to keep control. She was the Chosen of Bhaal and it kept in with the deal the three made. Who else is he gonna give it to? And you really think Orin would give it back?
So this line, like, what were the writers trying to get at?
Romantic feelings? At the end of this journal entry he talks about pitting the 'catapult' that is Orin against the vagabonds that are the True Soul renegades so he can get her out of the way and he can have his Golden Reign.
Pity? Fear? We just don't know.
I feel like messy timeline notes and junk should have been addressed more than Slither Wet Malice.
I finally bit the bullet and killed Gortash so I could rifle through all his things.
I found his journal and the first lines were about Orin.
'I knew it would be risky to give one of the netherstones to that loose catapult Orin, but when I look in her eyes I feel something, though I'm not sure what to call it- and after all whats the point of a grand alliance of the Dead Three without old Bhaal?'
What's your take on this? I want to know what Gortash feels when he looks into Orin's mad eyes. Does he just have a thing for Bhaalspawn?
Here's the thing, and maybe this is just me coping, because I really, really hate that line, and it's made me barf...
I don't understand that journal entry because he also mentions he "gave the netherstone to Orin."
But like...the Dark Urge had that stone in Bhaal's dagger. I assume they would always have it on them, you know, it being Bhaal's dagger, and them being Chosen, and also because it has a fucking Netherstone.
So...what?
How did he GIVE it to her, but she killed the Dark Urge...and what?
Didn't pick up the knife that Daddy gave him???
Unless the Dark Urge was letting Gortash hold onto their stone...but why would they do that?
I don't think Gortash would be holding two Netherstones ever. I know they fucked nasty, but I also know, they would never make a power imbalance like that ever. The whole point was that there wouldn't be one.
So I think it's inconsistent, the way all of BG3 is, especially when it comes to timelines.
And also.
my other delusion is.
Gortash literally lies in his journals all the time.
So most likely.
He was just pretending that he willingly chose to give Orin the netherstone, to feel in control, when she probably just showed up with it one day...
You know.
What he basically says to you as the Dark Urge?
I'm inclined to believe that he's only truthful with the Dark Urge, because their ciphers don't tell lies.
But all of his stories about his life are.
And his private journals...I mean.
Man's as delusional as me. I think it'd be a way for him to feel like he's in control.
(This is me coping. But also...I don't know? It doesn't really make sense, the way a lot of his journals don't. I think he's full of hot air.)

dark urge lost his memory and called gortash by his official name.
2. The first time he called him 'my dearest assassin'.
3. After a bit more time.

Decided to go poking through the point and click dialogue files to look for Durge comments I haven't seen. Strangely I don't think this is all of them, because I have heard my Durge start hissing under his breath about screaming in a decidedly Durge fashion while in stealth, but I don't see it here.
*The ones with an asterisk are where I think it's Durge, but it might be one of the ones they share with Tav. They appear at the end of the sections, where Durge's lines go, but who knows: they aren't marked. Tav players feel free to let me know if your character has ever said any of this.
Reaching 0 HP: "Death is for other people."*
Harassing them by spamming their portrait: "I'm maiming as fast as I can!" "A thousand needlepricks in my rotten skull."
Combat turn start: "They're dying for me. All of them." "Behold the dance of death."
Stealth: "A knife in the dark."* "Time for bitter business the light would fear to shine on."*
Moving: "Walk in death." "Dream in red." "Pave my path with corpses. Build my castle with bones." "They should all be running." "Have I been this way before?"
Selecting them: "Mind never quiet." "I can do better. I must." "Where am I? What's going on?" "Still in control. Just." "Keep it together." "Father, they will die for you." "Everything is clear." "Nothing hurts anymore." "All is ash and meat!" "Intestines throb. Blood whispers." "Must lug my guts through this hell." "Wretched thing, pull yourself together." "How many die today? How many die tomorrow?"
Attacking, or casting an offensive spell: "Worship me, the prophet of the end!" "One down, millions live." "Father, are you watching?" "A beautiful death." "Kill! Kill! Kill again!" "Hee hee hee." "HAH! HAH! HAH!" "A fine day for murder!" "Bodies for the harvest!" "The butcher calls." "You will die for me, won't you?"

The way The Locked Tomb uses cannibalism is so interesting, because while it does serve as a metaphor for intimacy, the series only uses it that way when it's cannibalism of the soul. Cannibalism of the flesh is either extremely limited, or straight up horrific.
Like step six of the Eightfold Word. It's literally presented as "consume the flesh," but Ianthe goes out of her way to specify that a single drop of blood is sufficient. The most unhinged act of intimacy in the series, and it's explictly the soul and only the soul being digested.
Human flesh is only consumed in any volume twice: John's post-apocalyptic survival cannibalism, and Harrow's delicious murder soup. Both those scenes are exactly the opposite of intimate, and about as far from erotic as you can get.
John and Alecto gorging themselves on anonymous strangers was debasing to everyone involved, and not something John ever wanted to be reminded of. Harrow's soup was a desperate attempt at self-defense, like an animal in a trap gnawing through her own leg. It horrified and disgusted everyone at the table, even Ianthe, the number one suspect at making it weird.
I love the overall effect of the layered symbolism, because it allows cannibalism to be explored both ways. Seperately, without one connotation implicating the other. Except for Babs, of course, who gets to be both.
