“Couldn’t have gone far,” Marcus muttered again, firm and certain in tone, even if his belief wasn’t. “He’s Charlie but he ain’t gonna wander into Soc territory or some typa trouble.” “On purpose,” was all Micah could snap back before he was swearing and kicking his damn old tires and throwing a fist at the air. He huffed hard angry breaths, blood running boiling red, before it all sank down to the pure panic he didn’t have a lick of a clue what to do with. The feeling of his gut dropping and hands shaking was a bleak flashback to months and months ago— when Tommy got a real, real bad fever. Some typa flu, that was their guess. They couldn’t ever afford no real doctor so they’d never know. All he could do was keep his kid brother in the bath, givin’ him liquids and food even when he puked his guts up, and pray to some God he never once paid thought to. Marcus’s Mama had been the savior that day, with caring hands and a soft voice that Micah could never find within his make up. Micah swallowed thickly in the dead silence of the gang. Some watchin’ him, some pretendin’ to look away. He didn’t care none. He grit his teeth and clenched his fists because, damn it, he had no time to stand here and be helpless.
