Circus Entry Ticket
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Above) Line-drawing design and Circus Ticket print outs
Above find the handmade line drawing I created on procreate in order to make DIY circus ticket to display in our museum. idea came to me while reflecting on the work I’d already made and brainstorming any other possible things I could create a picture in our museum.
The design was loosely based off of the research I did on circus and freakshow posters earlier on in the module, however was mostly from my own imagination and what I personally perceive the circus a full run away with tickets would look like. The idea came to me one night in bed, I spent an hour also creating a range of variations you can find below however the above outcome was the most successful in my opinion.
Next using the mood board I created as a reference I picked the above orange background colour by placing a photo of my mood board in procreate and using the colour picker option. Next after doing some research online and what circus tickets usually look like I created my own variation of what I imagine Nottingham circuses tickets would look like. Are used a bold font I felt resembled a typewriter something like we used to create the text of the time period, not only did I choose the font I wrote with this reason it also much is a post I created and allowed me to still stay true to my art style.

Hair Colour of Character -
I did some research on hair during the 1800s and from what I found recommend to the group chat we give our character very long mousey brown hair.
According to my research nearly all women had very long hair during Ethels time period as it was the hight of fashion. Mousey brown was the most common hair colour at the time which is why I suggested that, since this was a period before hair dying was popular.
Tumblr media
(Above) Real piece of photography of Victorian women and their hair
After suggesting this to the group chat we briefly discussed making her hair Red after I put in the chat the reasons I believed we shouldn’t.
I found that during the time period around only 1-2% of English women had blonde or Red hair and on top of this Blonde at the time was a sign of Beauty and Grace whereas Red was seen as undesirable and fighsty, neither of which I felt fit our character well.
We briefly discussed making her hair red to make her appear more conventionally unattractive for the time period but in the end came to the conclusion it was best to just make her start of very average to make the later plot more impactful.

Object Finding
All text font below done by me and created to look like old fashioned hand writing
Photo frame -
Tumblr media
(Above) Diy handmade by me photo frame, photo and composition
Above is a DIY photo frame I created by ripping and fraying an old piece of cardboard I found in a box of vintage items. To it I stick one of the photos I printed and experimented on with bleach using beige masking tape. I chose this tape on purpose for its aesthetic values and I in general just really like have a composition turns out when using it, Are used a similar technique making a mood board linking the objects to it.
You can’t see on this photo but I also wrote some text a bottom of the DIY photo frame writing in a way I practised in aim to make the font look old-fashioned like for text we research and found in the box of vintage items.
I composed the piece above just experimenting with placement until I was satisfied how it looked. Underneath the DIY photo frame is an actual photo frame I found in the charity shop at the very beginning of the module. We decided not to use it as a featuring object in a museum as it had come from the wrong time period however I find it eventful it still managed to work its way into our display and put to a similar but different use.
Teddy Bear -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Above) Vintage teddy prop and his Tag
I found this real vintage teddy in a big box of stuffed animals at the Rag Market in town. Once buying it I went to another vintage shop where the owner told me he collected vintage teddy’s and the teddy I had picked up was real vintage.
For this reason I feel like this teddy would be as close as we can get to getting the most realistic teddy for Ethel to own.
I plan to accessories him with some materials in order to make him more personal or add some kind of tag.
(Update)
I went on to create a tag for the teddy bear, which we named Norman, using the brown covering of a sketchbook I own. I decided after making it to fray the card using a pair of scissors and my hands to make the tag look worn and old, like something well used and from the 1800s.
Glass Medicine Bottle-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Above) Vintage accessorised bottle prop and it’s tag
The bottle you see above is a genuine vintage bottle we found amongst a junk box of vintage collected items. We found the tag you can see on the bottle in attac he’s in the box and decided to attach it to the bottle as we plan to use it as a prop to represent Ethels smallpox medicine.
Similarly to the teddy bears, I made a tag for this medicine bottle using the same technique as before. Written across the bottle is the word Tecovirimat, a type of medicine I found through my research that treats Smallpox, find my sources below.

Creating a Postcard Prop
Researching postcards from 1800s-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Above) Found love note, Inspired love note
Above is an old poetry book I found in a pile of real vintage objects, at the back I found a love poem.
Our group had planned to make one of our objects a love note from Edgar to Ethel, something she treasured.
Experiment-
Tumblr media
(Above) Hand written love note prop
I inspired the above poem I wrote from the real vintage love poem I found, following a similar rhythm and using some of the same language.
As a group we decided the poem I should write should be quite sickly and almost accessivly romantic as this was likely the first time Edgar had ever been in love due to his age and appearance.
Tumblr media
(Above) Postcard exterior second hand bought
I decided to write the love note on the back of a black and white postcard I bought from a charity shop, I chose this specific image one, for the obvious reason it looked old and something that would be easily accessible at the time. And two, because I felt the image had some sensual connotations because of the composition and shapes of the mountain.

Mood board I made
Earlier in the day my teemmates created a first attempt mood board however after being adviced to take a diffrent approach i took it upon myslef to create a second mood board in the way our tutors advised us too with the little amount of materials i could find.
It was difficult to get the mood board to be exactly how i wanted as i had a very limited supply of materials to choose from due to the fact we had last dibs on the materials after disposing of the groups original attempt. Despite this im very proud of my mood board and think it reflects the aims and aesthetic of out character and her story well.
Mood board Version 1 -
Tumblr media
(Above) My version of our moodboard and the final choice
Mood board Version 2, Revisited-
Tumblr media
(Above) Edited second version moodboard
Unfortunately i took this photo after someone had medaled with the original composition i had layed out, originally i presented it with the pieces of material coming off the wall overlaying the moodboard making the composition come off the paper but someone moved it. Despite this i still think you can imagine and the photo gives off pretty much the aesthetic i meant it to.
I had wanted to print out a photo of Ethel in the size A4 or A3 however at this time i only have availability to the size you see above. Despite this again i think you can see what kind of idea i was going for, keeping continuity with the storyline ‘the girl without a face’, acting as a metaphorical face her life and aesthetics moodboard.
Mood board Version 3, Silhouette -
Here i had wanted to print of an A4 or A3 photo of Ethel, cut around her face and body, similarly to the example above, and have the window in her lack of face as an insight into her life and life’s aesthetic. I thought it should fit very well into our storyline ‘the girl without a face’ as she would both physically not have a face and it would secondly show a metaphorical version of her ‘face’ through her life and aesthetics.

Creating Masks
Design 1, Best Outcome and Featured Object -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Above) Acrylic painted mask design One
I decided to choose this particular mask as the most successful outcome as it is most historically accurate and most relevant to Ethels story. The mask is worn both as a soothing/healing device, like the Victorian beauty mask (see research below) and also as a way to prevent anyone seeing her freak show “exhibit” unless a paying customer. The circus inspired colours were used as a way of advertising the circus while Ethel is in public.

Creating Masks
Victorian Beauty Mask (1800) -
Tumblr media
(Above) Piece of illustration taken from a Victorian advertisement
https://timeline.com/victorian-beauty-mask-5b04de302841
Inventor Helen Rowley claimed the mask could be used by persons “suffering with certain forms of disease, or afflicted with a bad complexion,”
This mask design would be a perfect inspiration for out Character Ethel Kuttler as she has “in-desirable” skin in reference to the time period and would very likely of used a similar device.
I find the straps around the back of the mask that wraps around the head look similar to the straps of some kind of straight jacket. I think it would be a really good idea to explore this kind of aesthetic.
(Update) Ethel now is to suffer from extreme scarring from a bad case of smallpox on the face, this makes the Victorian beauty mask even more relevant. Im thinking Ethel wears the mask when not in freak show to stop anyone other than paying visitors from seeing her.
Medico della Peste / Plague Doctor (1700)-
Tumblr media
(Above) The Plague Doctor mask has a beak like a bird
https://www.camacana.com/en-UK/plague-doctor-michele-1.php?IDCat=589
Originating in the 17th century by French physician Charles de Lorme, the Plague Mask was worn by plague doctors to protect them from airborne diseases. Carnival goers eventually started wearing a decorated version as a memento mori, a rememberance of their mortality.
Columbina Mask (Italy, 1530) -
Tumblr media
(Above) Examples of a Columbina mask in modern day media
https://zestandlavender.com/how-to-make-carnival-masks-for-the-casanova-grand-ball/
The original creator of the Columbina mask thought her face was much to beautiful to cover completely, and so instead wore a half-mask especially designed for her.
It would be interesting to explore only half Ethels face has burns and the “beautiful” sections of it are allowed on display.

Finding a face
Tumblr media
(Above) Selection of our top 3 new images to depict our character Ethel
Once leaving class, myself and my peers continued to look for a copyright free image to use as a face to our named character. The original photo we chose was a good starting point, however we felt it too quickly chosen during our studio hours and we should put some more time into choosing the right image, one with only a single person in it.
Above are the refined selection of images we felt best portrayed our character, a young victorian women. They were all found on the copyright free website clicker which i will link below.
Together in a groupchat we decided to go with the image you can find below and went on to conduct similar but more advanced experiments as before in order to distort the face.
