THE LAST OF US PART II: Ellie's journal entry (2/?)

yes critical analysis of media is super valuable but I think suspension of disbelief isn't practiced enough

I think one of the things I'm most worried about with tlou hbo is how they'll portray Ellie. In the game we see how effected Ellie is not just by Joel's death but the violence afterwards. How slowly pieces of her are destroyed by her revenge.

Ellie goes to Seattle and chases down Abby because its what Joel would have done. She destroys herself because of this. And it isn't until the very end she realizes thats never what Joel would have wanted. He never wanted Ellie to destroy herself in his name.

And I worry they'll miss that with tlou hbo.

Thinking about the possibility of a teenage JJ finding out thar Ellie left him and Dina for revenge.

 Like JJ is maybe 16 and he’s been asking a lot of questions about Jesse and Ellie and Dina when he was a baby and why they left the farm. And its not that Ellie or Dina don’t answer his questions, they just give him short simple answers. And he’s curious.

So one day he’s cleaning and he finds a few of his momma’s old journals and his curiosity gets the better of him and he starts looking through them. And inadvertently finds the journal from the farm and Santa Barbara. And he can’t stop reading.

Ellie finds him a few hours later and he can’t stop himself from lashing out. He’s hurt. His Momma abandoned him and Mom. 

Suddenly he feels like everything he knew about Ellie is a lie, she can’t actually love him and mom as much as she claims if she left them. His thoughts spiral and he lashes out with all his anger at Ellie. 

Says things a small part of him knows he’ll regret. He didn’t mean to tell her she’s not his real mom but she left him first. And he doesn’t know that things would be better if his Dad was still alive instead but the words flow out and he can’t stop them. 

Ellie is taken aback for a moment, confused until she sees the journal in his hand and realizes what happened. She opens her mouth to explain, but nothing comes out. JJ’s yells draws Dina to them. 

Dina tries to calm JJ but he storms out with a bitter “Your not my Mother and you never were” directed at Ellie.

Dina turns to follow JJ, to confront him, console him, explain everything to him but Ellie stops her. Tells Dina to give him a few minutes as tears stream down Ellie’s face. 

Dina pulls Ellie into her, holds Ellie as she takes a few deep shaky breaths. 

Ellie confesses to Dina how she finally has an idea of what she put Joel through and the anguish and guilt is renewed. Both with her actions towards Joel and well as her pursuit of revenge and the anguish she put Dina through and Ellie’s own anger at herself.
