FFXIV Write 2024 | #19. Taken

(no gpose for this because my game crashed when I tried to and I'm very tired)

Third Umbral Moon, 14th Sun, 02 7AE

Finally back on Eorzean soil. I wish we could’ve arrived to happier news.

We were greeted by none other than Merlwyb, who briefly updated us on the small movements that have happened in Gyr Abania in our absence - one of which concerned us greatly.

On a mission to transport wounded to the Rising Stones, a Resistance squad was ambushed by the Skulls. They targeted two Scions in particular; as we later found out from Thancred and Arenvald when we arrived at Castrum Oriens, it was on direct order from Zenos himself.

Lily and Krile were taken prisoner.

My hand is shaking even as I write those words. Krile’s a strong woman, I know, but she’s hardly a combatant either - I can’t bear to imagine what they might be putting her through that she simply doesn’t know how to resist. And Lily…

Lily stayed in Gyr Abania, even as we traveled all the way to the Far East, to make a point - it was obvious to us all. She felt the need to prove she could stand on her own - that she could run missions for the Resistance, fight for the Scions, work with Krile to provide the aid the Resistance needed…without relying on Mia and I. No matter how many times we told her she didn’t have to prove anything, she was determined to - just as she had been determined to protect us as we fled from the bloody banquet.

And just like then, our enemies answered her determination by capturing her.

It’s not fucking fair. I know that strength is there in her, I can see it — and I won’t suffer our enemies to stamp it out.

It was all I could do to stop myself from charging straight towards Castrum Velodyna and beyond…no, that’s giving myself too much credit. Thancred and Arenvald practically had to tackle me to the ground and hold me back to stop me from charging ahead. They’re right, of course. Thancred left soon after, intending to slip behind enemy lines and search for intel, promising he would find them. I trust him to do so.

…In light of these events, these ruminating feelings about Lyse and Mia really seem insignificant. I refuse to concern myself with them at this juncture - not while Lily and Krile are in danger. And I won’t stop until they’re safe again.

As a practitioner of sword arts there is nothing sexy about a sword being worn on the back. It's impractical and unrealistic. All it shows is they know nothing about real swords.

Harrowing: someone in your Fandom just made an innocuous and harmless post that nonetheless betrays a deep misunderstanding of the character and the character's narrative purpose and you just have to sit there and let them be wrong lest you be an asshole

FFXIV Write 2024 | #18: Hackneyed

Word Count: 270

Sixth Umbral Moon, 30th Sun, 04 7AE

We did it. The universe is safe. And we’re home.

There are too many things to untangle but right now my thoughts are only of Mia. When she visited me in my sickbed, there were literal minutes of silence where we just stared at each other, grateful that we were alive and safe. That we both made it home.

We were sitting with that feeling, of being home and together, when she just said it out of the blue. It was sudden, like she hadn’t planned on it, like her mouth had a mind of its own - but nor did she take it back. She said it, looked stunned, and then we both just sort of grinned stupidly at each other for another silent minute.

“Marry me, El. Please.”

It is, perhaps, somewhat cheesy, a little hackneyed—you might even say overly cliché—to say that I heard fireworks, celebratory bells, and joyous choirs bursting into song in that moment. I like to think there isn’t a soul that would blame me, though. And I, of course, said yes. (And teased both of us a little by expressing shock that she was the one to ask. I genuinely didn’t expect that.)

There’s so much else to sort out—there’s so much I need to put in this journal about everything that happened in Ultima Thule—but right here in this moment, I am basking in her love, and she in mine, secure in the knowledge that we’ll be here with each other - forever. And if that’s clichéd, then I’m basking in that too.

FFXIV Write 2024 | #17: Sally

Word Count: 484

Fourth Umbral Moon, 10th Sun, 06 7AE

The time is almost come to strike back.

The train should be finished tonight. Everyone’s preparations are just about complete: most of the Scions are holding down the fort in Shaaloani, but G’raha and Krile are joining the three of us and Wuk Lamat on the vanguard. Lily and Krile’s collaborations are producing some stunningly powerful pictomancy, and Mia’s equipped a brand new set of paladin armor, smithed by Rral Soj from Wachumeqimeqi, and pulled her sword out of storage to help Wuk Lamat lead the charge into the thunder dome - against the strange metallic armies her brother commands.

Wuk Lamat herself is…nervous doesn’t begin to describe it. Understandably so, of course. It’d be hard enough to lead the charge in any case; to do so after so recently shouldering the weight of leadership of her nation… let alone losing her father?

“You must have sallied forth like this dozens of times before,” she said to me, looking slightly desperate. I admitted that I had - “and if you think there’s some sort of secret to doing so without the fear, without the looming specter of your recently deceased loved one hanging over you, I’m going to tell you there isn’t.”

She took that well, at least: “I knew that in my heart, if I’m being honest. I don’t even want to banish Papa’s specter - I want him to watch over me as we set forth in defense of the nation he loved. It’s just…the pressure…”

I don’t know how to alleviate the pressures of Dawnservant, and I told her so. But I do think there’s something to be said for venturing forth like this, confident in the knowledge that you’re doing what is best for yourself and the ones you love (which, for her, extends far beyond her immediate circle of close friends and loved ones). The pressure is still there, but the confidence can help bear that burden.

And well, for all her naiveté, she has confidence to spare. As well she should, I think: her sense of justice is strong, and that’s something I’d like to see at the head of a nation - before any of the common problems force her to make “the hard decisions” or whatever. I don’t know - I just hope she gets to do something with this before she faces the Merlwyb dilemma of “oh no we simply have no choice but to break the kobold treaty”…

In any case, at the moment, her sense of justice is at the vanguard of the charge against the metallic soldiers, and I’ll make sure to clean up the scraps left in her wake. If we survive ramming the dome, at least.

When Obsidian learned that Selenite had never set eyes upon the moon, they delved into their memory banks to recall images of this celestial body. Once the opportunity arose, the machine took their beloved companion into the wilderness beyond their pristine existence ⸺ the only existence Selenite had ever known. They rode on and on, until the lightning receded into starlight. There, in the darkest reaches of the sky, a miracle waited.

Wishing you a very good and abundant Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, my friends. For many cultures around the world, this is the time we observe the beautiful full moon and give thanks for a bountiful harvest.

For me, the year's bounty can be found in the friends who've embraced me into their lives ⸺ and the new faces I've gotten to know in 2024.

Let's go into the new season replenished.
