————
You and Eloise had been secretly involved for nearly a year, your relationship growing deeper with every passing day. The love you shared was a fierce and unyielding bond, one that consumed you both entirely. The secrecy, however, weighed heavily on your hearts. It was a necessary burden, you both knew, for if word of your relationship spread, the Ton would likely react with scandal and disdain. The society’s rigid norms left little room for a love like yours, especially one between two women.
Still, Eloise felt certain that some of her family members had begun to suspect. The Bridgertons were close-knit and perceptive, especially her older siblings. Yet, despite her growing confidence in their acceptance—knowing that they wouldn’t care about the gender of her lover—the two of you decided to keep your love hidden for a little longer, just in case. The world was still a harsh place, and you both valued the sanctuary of your private moments.
One afternoon, you and Eloise found yourselves in the drawing room, comfortably seated with her younger siblings, Hyacinth and Gregory. They were locked in a spirited debate over their favorite chocolates, the sort of sibling rivalry that was more amusing than contentious. You watched the exchange with a smile, the affection you held for Eloise mirrored in the way you looked at her family.
Eventually, the conversation turned to you. With a mischievous grin, you leaned forward and interrupted their bickering. “Hyacinth,” you began, your tone light and playful, “Would you like to do something fun with me?”
Eloise, ever the curious one, arched an eyebrow and leaned in closer. “Do what?” she asked, suspicion lacing her words, though her eyes twinkled with amusement.
You shot her a teasing glance and replied, “This doesn’t concern you, El. I need a favor from your lovely little sister.”
At this, Eloise couldn’t help but pout, her lips forming a small, adorable frown. You had to suppress a laugh; she always looked so endearing when she was sulking.
Hyacinth, ever eager for an adventure, practically leapt out of her seat. “What is it?!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with anticipation.
Eloise watched as you leaned in close to Hyacinth, whispering something with an urgency that piqued her curiosity. Her heart thudded in her chest, a mix of anxiety and excitement swirling within her. She fought the temptation to eavesdrop, straining to keep her expression neutral. Why were you and Hyacinth having such a private conversation, especially right in front of her?
Gregory, sitting nearby, caught Eloise’s uneasy glance before turning his puzzled gaze toward you and Hyacinth. He furrowed his brow, clearly perplexed by the secretive exchange. “What are you two whispering about?” he asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
Hyacinth pulled back slightly, her face alight with mischief. She glanced at Gregory, her eyes sparkling with a twinkle that only made him more suspicious. “I cannot say,” she replied, grinning broadly. “It’s a surprise, but it’s not for you!”
Gregory let out an exaggerated huff, crossing his arms in a show of mock indignation. “What? No fair. Why can’t I know too?” he protested, his voice tinged with genuine disappointment.
Eloise’s curiosity deepened, her heart quickening further. What could you possibly be planning that required such secrecy? She tried to maintain an air of indifference, but inside, she was practically bursting with anticipation. The secrecy, the whispered words—it all felt like a mystery she desperately wanted to solve.
Sensing Eloise’s growing unease, you turned to Gregory with a smile. “Gregory, would you be so kind as to take Eloise to another room for perhaps an hour or two? Hyacinth and I have some things to discuss,” you said, your voice gentle but firm, your eyes meeting Eloise’s for a fleeting moment.
Gregory groaned in reluctant agreement, sensing he wasn’t going to win this argument. He rose from his seat and turned to Eloise, offering her a resigned look. “Come on, Eloise,” he said with a sigh. “Looks like we’re being banished from the room.”
Eloise shot you a confused look. The glance you gave her in return was unreadable, only deepening the mystery. Reluctantly, she stood and followed Gregory out of the room, her mind racing with questions.
Once they had left, you turned back to Hyacinth, lowering your voice conspiratorially. “It’s a surprise,” you began, “so don’t breathe a word of this to Eloise—or even Gregory, for that matter. That boy has a big mouth…” You smiled warmly at the young girl, whose eyes were wide with excitement. “I want to make these paper rings as a symbol of our friendship. Eloise’s birthday is coming up, and I thought it would be a nice idea to surprise her with something meaningful. What do you think, H?”
Hyacinth’s face lit up with pure excitement, her eyes widening as she absorbed the idea. “Paper rings! That’s such a beautiful idea,” she exclaimed, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. “I’ve never heard of something like that before, but it sounds perfect for Eloise’s birthday. It rather reminds me of the paper crowns Mama crafts for our birthdays each year.” She clapped her hands together, already envisioning the colorful and intricate designs they could create together. The possibilities seemed endless—each ring a small token of affection, crafted with care and thought.
Hyacinth was too young to comprehend the true nature of your relationship with her sister. It was far simpler to present the rings as tokens of friendship than to explain they were, in essence, akin to wedding bands.
“She’ll love it, especially since it’s from you,” Hyacinth added with a knowing smile. She was well aware of the special connection you and Eloise shared, even if she didn’t fully understand its depth. To her, it was obvious that Eloise treasured you more than anyone else, and that whatever you did together would mean the world to her older sister.
You couldn’t help but smile at Hyacinth’s enthusiasm. You imagined the look on Eloise’s face when she saw the rings—how her eyes would soften, a smile tugging at her lips as she realized the thought and care that had gone into it. It was a small, delicate way to celebrate your relationship without drawing too much attention, a secret message hidden in plain sight.
The two of you eagerly set to work, pulling out an array of Hyacinth’s crafting supplies—everything from colored paper and ribbons to bits of lace and glittering beads. The room soon became a whirlwind of creativity as you and Hyacinth immersed yourselves in the project, each of you contributing ideas with enthusiasm.
Hyacinth, thrilled to be part of something so special, quickly took the lead in offering suggestions. “We could use bright colors, like deep blues and purples,” she proposed, her eyes alight with excitement. “Or perhaps we could weave in patterns, something unique that would make each ring truly personal.”
You listened intently, appreciating each of Hyacinth’s ideas. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and together you imagined how every detail would reflect the affection you held for Eloise. As you carefully folded and shaped the paper, you realized how much these small rings were beginning to symbolize your bond with Eloise—hidden yet unbreakable.
As you worked side by side, Hyacinth occasionally glanced at you with a curious look, sensing the depth of the connection between you and her sister. Though she was too young to fully grasp the true nature of your relationship, she clearly recognized the affection that flowed between you and Eloise, something she admired and perhaps even envied in her innocent way.
“Do you think it would be a good idea to put our initials on the inside of the rings?” you asked, suddenly struck by the thought of adding a hidden, personal touch.
Hyacinth’s eyes lit up with delight at the idea. “Oh, yes!” she exclaimed, her voice bubbling with excitement. “It would be like a little secret declaration of friendship, just between you and Eloise. No one else would notice it unless they looked very closely,” she added, giggling at the thought.
You smiled warmly, pleased that Hyacinth had understood your intention so well. That was precisely what you wanted—a subtle, almost hidden symbol of your love, something that would be yours and Eloise’s alone. Together, you continued crafting the rings.
Ultimately, you both decided to opt for a simpler design. Eloise had never been one for intricate patterns or overly elaborate details—she preferred elegance in its most understated form. The choice of color was immediate and unanimous: a light, soft blue that perfectly complemented the color of Eloise’s eyes, bringing out the subtle sparkle that you adored.
The ring was crafted from smooth, high-quality paper, carefully folded into a delicate band. It was slender and unadorned, its simplicity making it all the more elegant. The light blue paper was soft to the touch, with a faint sheen that caught the light just enough to draw attention without being flashy. To add a personal touch, you lined the inner side of the ring with a thin, silvery thread, weaving it subtly into the fold so that it would only be noticed upon closer inspection.
When the paper ring was finished, you felt a sense of pride in its delicate beauty. The soft blue, combined with the subtle silver lining, made the ring feel almost ethereal, a perfect reflection of the quiet yet profound connection you shared with Eloise. Hyacinth admired the finished piece.
“These are truly beautiful,” she said softly, her eyes sparkling with delight as she looked over the finished pieces. “I bet Eloise will love hers.”
“I’ll hide these for now,” you said, carefully tucking the delicate paper rings away. You nodded to Hyacinth, who was practically vibrating with excitement. “You can tell them they can come in.”
“Okay!” Hyacinth replied with a bright smile, rushing out of the room with all the enthusiasm of someone who had just been entrusted with the most important task in the world.
Moments later, Gregory and Eloise, who had been waiting in the adjoining room, appeared in the doorway. Gregory’s expression was one of mild curiosity, while Eloise’s held a mix of amusement and anticipation. “Are you all done with your little secret scheming?” Eloise asked, her voice laced with playful suspicion, though you could tell she was slightly nervous about what you might be planning.
You grinned, unable to resist teasing her. “What, you don’t like surprises?” you asked, nudging her shoulder affectionately.
Eloise chuckled, though she tried to mask how much that simple touch affected her. “I love surprises, especially when they come from you,” she admitted in a whisper, her heart skipping a beat as she spoke. “But this waiting is torture. Can you at least give me a hint?”
Before you could respond, Hyacinth piped up with a gleeful grin. “Oh, don’t give her even a tiny hint! She’s too impatient!” she declared, clearly enjoying the secret the two of you now shared.
You smirked, turning back to Eloise, whose eyes were twinkling with curiosity. “Don’t worry, Hyacinth. I know your sister too well—she won’t be getting any hints from me anytime soon.”
Eloise pouted dramatically, crossing her arms in mock offense. “How rude of both of you,” she said, though her playful tone betrayed her fondness. “All I wish for is a small hint. Is that truly too much to ask?”
“Yes!” Hyacinth chimed in again, her voice filled with laughter, making you join in. “It’s alright, Eloise,” you said, still smiling. “You’ll find out soon enough. Did you forget your birthday is next week, my l—” You abruptly stopped, nearly letting a term of endearment slip. “—my lovely best friend,” you quickly corrected, hoping your stumble went unnoticed.
Eloise raised an eyebrow at your near slip-up. She gave you a warm, if somewhat teasing, smile. “Yes, that dreadful day is fast approaching,” she replied, her voice light though her feelings were anything but. “And I can’t wait to find out what this mysterious surprise is, best friend.”
You couldn’t help but laugh nervously at your own blunder, feeling your cheeks warm as they flushed a deep red.
Seeing your blush and hearing your laughter made Eloise’s heart flutter all the more. There was something about seeing you flustered that only endeared you to her further—your vulnerability made her love for you swell within her chest.
Gregory, meanwhile, observed the exchange with a raised eyebrow, his brow furrowing slightly as he took in the subtle but significant interaction between you and Eloise. There was a flicker of suspicion in his eyes, as though he sensed there was more going on than what meets the eye, but he chose to remain silent, watching with quiet curiosity.
A week later, Eloise’s birthday had finally arrived, and the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. The Bridgerton household was a flurry of activity, with vibrant decorations transforming every room into a festive wonderland. The scent of sumptuous dishes wafted from the kitchen, where a grand feast was being prepared, and the family buzzed with last-minute preparations, each member contributing to the day’s excitement. Despite the chaos, Eloise found herself slightly overwhelmed, though she did cherish the noisy, loving commotion of her family.
As the evening settled in, the din of the celebrations grew louder, providing the perfect opportunity for a quiet moment alone with Eloise. You spotted her seeking refuge in the serene garden, a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere inside.
“Eloise, I was wondering where you had disappeared to, my love,” you said, approaching her with a mix of eagerness and nervousness.
Eloise turned at the sound of your voice, her face lighting up with a radiant smile. “Finally, you found me,” she replied, her voice carrying a note of relief. “I needed a brief escape from the chaos—just a moment to breathe and enjoy some peace.”
“Is it time for my birthday surprise now?” she asked, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
“Oh, so you haven’t forgotten?” You teased, wrapping your arms around her waist.
“Of course I haven't forgotten,” Eloise responded, her voice soft as she leaned into your embrace. She gazed at you with adoration. “How could I forget that my beloved—or should I say, best friend—has a surprise planned for me?”
You chuckled softly, your gaze darting around the garden to ensure privacy before you took a step back from Eloise. Clearing your throat, you tried to steady the emotion swelling within you. Your eyes were already misty with unshed tears, a testament to how much this moment meant.
Eloise noticed the tears beginning to form and felt a pang of concern mixed with anticipation. “What is it?” she asked, her heart fluttering with eager curiosity. She watched you, her eyes fixed on the piece of paper you held.
“Patience, El,” you said with a reassuring smile, trying to keep your voice steady.
Eloise let out a soft laugh, her impatience barely contained. “Alright, alright,” she said, her gaze never leaving the folded up paper. “I’ll do my best to exercise some patience, even though it’s incredibly difficult with you being so mysterious.”
With that, you began to unfold the paper, your heart racing as you prepared to share this incredibly special surprise with Eloise. The quiet of the garden and the soft rustling of leaves added a magical touch to the intimate moment, making it all the more memorable.
“Eloise, before I give you your birthday gift, there’s something I need to say. This past year with you has been a journey of incredible joy and discovery. From the very start, you’ve brought so much light and laughter into my life. Each private moment we’ve shared has only deepened my affection and admiration for you.”
You showed her the paper ring as you continued to speak. “This ring I’ve crafted is not just a gift but a symbol—a symbol of everything you mean to me. It’s a simple token, but it carries with it the weight of my feelings, my gratitude, and my hopes for our future. I chose the light blue paper because it mirrors the sparkle in your eyes that I find so captivating.
As we stand here, away from the chaos of the world, I want you to know that my feelings for you are as pure and as steadfast as the simplest design on this ring. Though we cannot yet declare our love in the grandest of ways, this small gesture is my way of showing you that you are cherished beyond words.
So, with all my heart, I give you this ring. May it always remind you of my love and of this special moment we share together. Happy birthday, Eloise. You are my everything. Now, will you please be my secret wife?”
You grinned, your hands trembling with nervous anticipation, causing the edges of the paper to crinkle slightly. Your gaze fixed on Eloise, you waited with bated breath for her reaction.
Eloise stepped closer, her eyes glistening with emotion. Gently, she took hold of your quivering hands, her touch warm and steadying. As she looked up at you, tears began to spill down her cheeks. Despite the tears, her face was illuminated by a radiant smile, one that spoke of deep joy and overwhelming affection.
Eloise’s bright blue eyes locked with yours as she began to speak. Her voice trembled with profound emotion, struggling to remain steady. “My love,” Eloise began, her voice cracking slightly as she fought to keep her composure, “your words, your gesture… they touch my heart in ways I cannot even begin to articulate. This ring… this simple paper ring… means more to me than any grand jewel ever could. Every time I look at it, I will be reminded of the depth of your love, the strength of your affection, and your unwavering commitment to me. It is not the ring that has made me your secret wife; your love, your loyalty—these are what made me yours long ago.”
Tears welled up in your eyes at her heartfelt words, and your heart raced with relief and boundless joy. Overcome with emotion, you swept Eloise into your arms, lifting her up and spinning her around in a joyous embrace.
As you spun her, Eloise’s laughter rang out—a melody of pure delight. The happiness radiating from her only deepened the love you felt for her, making the moment all the more special.
“So, that’s a yes then, correct?” you asked playfully, your face still beaming as you gently set her back down.
Eloise rolled her eyes in mock exasperation, a broad smile spreading across her face. “Of course, it’s a yes, you ridiculous woman,” she teased lovingly. “How could I ever say no to you?”
“Just checking,” you replied, your grin practically glued to your face.
With a sense of satisfaction, you slid the delicate paper ring onto Eloise’s finger. She admired the simple yet heartfelt gesture, her gaze softening as she looked up at you.
With a tender smile, she reached out to wipe away the tears from your cheeks. Her touch was gentle, her expression soft with love and contentment. “You know, you’re absolutely daft,” she said affectionately, “but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“And now that I’m your secret wife… I have a few demands, if you don’t mind.”
“And what are those demands, secret wife?” you asked, your curiosity piqued.
Eloise leaned in closer, her face alight with a mischievous grin. “Well, the first one is quite simple,” she said, her tone adopting a playfully authoritative edge. “As your wife, I demand regular kisses—at least ten a day. Minimum.”
“Only ten? I expected twenty at the very least,” you responded with a grin, the warmth of the moment filling you with unbridled happiness.
“Yes, only ten. For now,” Eloise said, her lips curling into a coy smile. “Though, do keep in mind, the number might increase depending on my mood and whims.”
You raised an eyebrow with a smirk. “Or perhaps it will increase based on the amount of private time we manage to steal away from the world?”
Eloise chuckled, clearly relishing the playful exchange. “Ah, you’re quite perceptive, my dear wife,” she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “You’re right; the more private time we manage to carve out, the more insistent I might become.”
She leaned in closer, her breath warm against your ear as she whispered, “I can be quite demanding when I set my mind to it.”
“Oh, I know, my dearest. But that’s one of the many reasons why I love you so,” you responded, your voice filled with affection.
Eloise’s heart fluttered at your words, her expression growing soft with tenderness. “And I love you,” she replied softly, her voice full of affection. “Though I should give you a fair warning—I have a few more demands in mind. Would you like to hear them? Even if you don’t, I will tell you anyway.”
You nodded eagerly, a giggle escaping your lips.
Eloise’s eyes danced with playful energy as she continued, “Firstly, I demand that you always save me the last piece of chocolate cake at every event. It is my favorite, after all.”
You rolled your eyes affectionately, your heart swelling with love for the woman who could so effortlessly blend whimsy and romance.
As you looked at Eloise, you marveled at how fortunate you were to share this life and these precious moments with her. How did you ever get so lucky?

————
Eloise and you were now something more, no longer just friends. You were sneaking around, stealing kisses whenever no one was looking. It was exhilarating but also nerve-wracking, especially for you, whose parents would kill her if they ever found out. The Bridgertons seemed far more open-minded. Eloise didn’t seem as worried about them finding out as you were.
Both of you were making out on Eloise’s bed, your hair disheveled and dresses crumpled. The room was dimly lit by the setting sun streaming through the curtains, casting a warm orange glow over the scattered books and trinkets that reflected Eloise’s personality, a personality that you adored with every inch of your being. Eloise’s hands roamed freely, fingers tangling in your hair, then tracing the curve of your back. You responded in kind, your hands exploring the softness of her skin, the delicate lines of her neck, the curve of her waist. Her lips were warm and insistent against yours, each kiss deepening as you both lost yourselves in the moment.
Her breath mingled with yours, creating a heady mix that made your head spin. The taste of her, sweet and intoxicating, was something you craved more with each passing second. Your kisses grew hungrier, more desperate, as if trying to make up for all the stolen moments you shared. Eloise’s hand slipped under your dress, her touch sending shivers down your spine. You gasped softly, your heart pounding in your chest, a mix of desire and fear coursing through you.
When you heard Anthony’s voice booming from downstairs, your heart raced with panic.
“Eloise!” he called out, his footsteps echoing up the stairs.
You pulled away from each other and your eyes went wide with fear. Eloise laughed heartily, finding your panicked expression both endearing and amusing. “No need to worry,” she whispered, gently wiping at the smudged lipstick on your face. She glanced toward the door, hearing Anthony’s footsteps approaching. “Stay calm, my love. Let’s hide under the bed.”
You gulped nervously before nodding. Eloise grabbed your hand and tugged you down with her. You both slid underneath the bed, making sure your feet didn’t stick out from underneath.
Anthony knocked at the door. “Eloise, Mother needs you,” he called through the door. When she didn’t answer, he knocked louder. “Eloise!” His tone grew agitated. Eloise couldn’t help but stifle a giggle. The sound of her brother’s frustration only added to the thrill of the moment.
You shot her a look, a quiet huff escaping your lips. Eloise could barely contain her amusement.
Anthony continued knocking, his agitation growing.
“Eloise, I know you’re in there,” he thundered. “Come out this instant.”
Despite the situation, Eloise couldn’t help but find his frustration comical. The absurdity of hiding under the bed like children hiding from a scolding made her shoulders shake with suppressed laughter.
“Very well, I shall enter. I trust you will make yourself presentable.” He opened the door slowly, scanning the room as he walked in. Eloise stifled another giggle, her eyes sparkling with mischief. You glared at her, quickly covering her mouth with your palm. “Could you be quiet for once, Eloise?!” you hissed in a whisper. You could feel Eloise’s grin against the palm of your hand, the vibration of her silent laughter only adding to your anxiety.
Anthony’s footsteps thudded against the hardwood floor as he moved further into the room. He glanced around, clearly puzzled by Eloise’s absence. Each step he took seemed louder in the tense silence, and the air felt thick with anticipation. You held your breath, every muscle in your body taut with fear of being discovered.
Eloise’s eyes met yours, her playful demeanor unchanged despite the gravity of the situation. Her irrepressible spirit shone through even now, making it impossible for her to take her brother’s ire seriously.
Anthony moved around the room, searching for any sign of his sister. He was so close to the bed now, and Eloise fought desperately to stifle her laughter. She could see your wide, nervous eyes in the dim light and felt the warmth of your hand over her mouth. You were surely going to get caught, and the thrill of the situation was making everything more hilarious to her. But definitely not to you.
You pressed your palm harder into Eloise’s mouth, a silent warning to keep quiet.
“Eloise?” Anthony said. He walked around the room some more, his shoes heavy against the hardwood floor.
You were beyond scared. Eloise was not taking this situation seriously enough.
“Where did she go?” Anthony whispered to himself. He stopped directly in front of Eloise’s bed.
Your heart thumped against your chest. Eloise could feel the rhythmic beating of it against her side. The room was silent except for the sound of your ragged breathing and the creaking of the floorboards as Anthony moved closer. Every second felt like an eternity, the suspense unbearable. Eloise’s body shook slightly with suppressed laughter, her eyes sparkling with mischief. You closed your eyes tightly, willing yourself to disappear into the floor, every muscle tense with fear. The scent of lavender from Eloise’s perfume mingled with the dust under the bed, creating a strangely comforting cocoon despite the perilous situation above.
Anthony stood there for a moment, his new, shiny shoes inches away from your hiding spot. Eloise’s heart raced faster, her amusement replaced by a slight flutter of anxiousness. Yet, her irrepressible nature couldn’t resist the temptation, and she began to poke her fingers into your sides teasingly.
You grabbed Eloise’s wandering fingers with your free hand. Eloise took the opportunity to lick your palm.
“I’m going to kill you,” you whispered lowly into Eloise’s ear.
Even in the tension of the situation, with Anthony so close and the fear of being caught, Eloise couldn’t suppress her mischief. The feeling of your skin against her lips sent a shiver down her spine. It always did.
She smirked slightly against your hand, replying in a whisper, “I’d like to see you try.” Her breath was warm against your palm.
Anthony finally left the room, shutting the door harshly behind him as he went.
“Eloise! You don’t take anything seriously, do you?” you hissed, removing your hand from Eloise’s mouth. Eloise was still grinning like a child.
“Oh, come now, I do take things seriously… sometimes,” Eloise laughed quietly, rolling her eyes at your chastising tone. She inched closer to you under the bed, your faces just inches apart. The dim light cast shadows across her face, emphasizing every perfect feature.
“You worry far too much, love.”
You sighed with a shake of your head. “I know… I just don’t want my parents finding out. You know why, El.”
Eloise smiled, amused by the lipstick smudges still on your lips and cheeks.
She reached a hand up, her fingers gently touching the smudges of lipstick on your face, wiping them away tenderly. A sly grin tugged at the corners of her mouth. “I know.”
She leaned in closer, her breath warm against your cheek. “But you can’t deny that it’s exciting, can you?”
“Maybe a little…” you muttered quietly, a flush on your cheeks.
Eloise’s grin widened as you admitted the truth. She inched even closer, your faces tantalizingly close. Her hand still gently touched your cheek, tracing the contour, as her voice dropped to a whisper.
“A little,” she echoed, “Only a little? I think the way your heart’s racing speaks differently.”
“My heart is racing because we were about to be caught by your eldest and most intimidating brother if you hadn’t quit your giggling!” you replied, but couldn’t help the smile that formed on your face.
Eloise returned your smile, “I suppose you have a point. But I also think it’s partly from my touch, don’t you?”
She gently twirled a strand of your hair around her finger, her tone playful and flirtatious.
“It always is, Eloise,” you said, pressing a kiss to Eloise’s cheek. “Now, must we stay here all night?”
Eloise chuckled, her heart fluttering at the feel of your lips on her cheek. “No, I suppose not. Unless you would like to stay here… under the bed with me for the entirety of the night?”
“Anywhere with you is a blessing, but I fear this may prove rather uncomfortable as time goes on, darling.”
“True,” Eloise conceded with a playful pout. “As much as I’d love nothing more than to stay here with you, this isn’t exactly ideal. Besides…” she leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper, “We have plenty more room on my very comfortable bed.”
You both giggled as Eloise grabbed your hand. The pair jumped back onto her bed, Eloise attacking your face with kisses.
The giggles quieted as Eloise lavished kisses all over your face, moving from your cheeks to your neck. A soft gasp escaped your lips, your heart fluttering at the affection. You were laid out on the bed, Eloise hovering over you, a mischievous grin on her face.
“You see,” she murmured between kisses, “Much more comfortable, hm?”
“Mhmm,” you hummed.
Eloise smiled against your skin. “You need not worry, my love. You’ll have me, always,” she whispered.
You nodded, embracing Eloise into a tight hug, your arms wrapping around her waist.
Eloise returned the embrace. She buried her face in the crook of your neck, the scent of your strawberry perfume filling her senses.
“I swear it,” she whispered, her breath warm against your skin. “I wish I could marry you, just to keep you like this, in my arms, every night.”
“Me too. Maybe one day,” you whispered back.
“Yes, one day,” Eloise agreed, closing her eyes and holding you tighter. For a brief moment, the two of you held each other in silence, each lost in thoughts, hopes, and dreams of a shared future together.

Better Than Any Book
pairing: eloise bridgerton x female! reader
word count: 2558
summary: eloise is jealous of the girl her best friend is secretly seeing until they have a heart-to-heart and feelings are revealed.
on ao3 here!
————
After Francesca and John’s wedding, Eloise decided to spend the summer with them at John’s estate in Scotland. Nestled amidst rolling hills and serene lochs, the estate provided a tranquil escape from the bustling yet suffocating life she had known. However, Eloise’s departure was clouded by a bitter farewell with her closest and bestest friend.
Your friendship had always been strong, built on trust and shared secrets, including your preference for women—a secret Eloise had vowed to protect to shield you from the Ton’s harsh judgment. Yet, the bond was strained by jealousy and misunderstanding. Just before Eloise left, you both had a heated argument about a woman you had been seeing in secret. Eloise didn’t truly dislike the woman; she was just envious, unable to admit her feelings even to herself. The argument left a lingering bitterness between them, and their parting words were sharp and unresolved.
As Eloise approached your residence, her heart pounded in her chest. The months of silence and the unresolved disagreement hung heavily over her, threatening to turn this reunion into a painfully awkward encounter. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves, and knocked on the door.
The door swung open almost immediately, revealing you in an elegant purple dress, as if you were about to go out. The sight of you, more beautiful than she remembered, made her heart skip a beat.
“H-hello,” Eloise stammered awkwardly, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt a rush of emotions—relief, anxiety, and a glimmer of hope.
“El? You’re back?!” you exclaimed, a broad smile spreading across your face. The disbelief in your eyes was quickly replaced with joy and warmth.
“I’m back,” Eloise confirmed, her timid smile mirroring her relief. Seeing your welcoming reaction eased some of the tension she had been carrying. “May I come in?”
“Of course,” you replied, stepping aside to let her in. “I was about to head out, but that can wait.” Your gesture was accompanied by a reassuring smile, the kind that always made Eloise feel at home.
As she stepped inside, the familiar scent of your home comforted her. She glanced around, taking in the warmly lit living room that held so many memories of shared laughter and deep conversations. You closed the door behind her, and for a moment, the silence between you was filled with unspoken words and lingering emotions.
Eloise hesitated, then looked at you with an unreadable expression. “You’re going out?” she asked, finally breaking the silence.
“Yes, uh, with Elizabeth,” you replied hesitantly, the name hanging in the air like an unspoken challenge. Elizabeth was the same woman Eloise had fought with you about before she left for her summer in Scotland.
Eloise’s heart felt like it dropped at the mention of Elizabeth. She tried to keep her expression neutral, though. “Ah, I see,” she said, struggling to hide the pang of jealousy that surged through her at the mention of the woman’s name.
“Yeah… how was everything? In Scotland?” you asked, eager to change the subject as you sat down on one of the living room couches.
Eloise took a seat across from you, still wrestling with the jealousy that burned inside her. “Oh, it was wonderful,” she said, trying to sound nonchalant. “The scenery was breathtaking, and the people were lovely.”
“You’re lucky, El. I wish I could’ve gone with you,” you said wistfully, a hint of longing in your voice.
Eloise’s eyes softened slightly. “I wish you could have, too,” she admitted. “It was beautiful, but I missed having you there to share it with.” She paused, searching for the right words. “I know things were tense when I left. I… I regret how we parted. I missed you.”
“I missed you too, but I didn’t think you would miss me after everything…”
Eloise felt a twinge of guilt at your words. She regretted the argument you both had had before she left, but her jealousy had gotten the better of her. “Of course I missed you,” she said softly. “I was an idiot.”
“I’m glad you agree,” you laughed, a lightness returning to your voice.
Eloise chuckled, feeling the tension between you start to melt away. “I suppose I deserved that,” she said, a small smile forming on her lips.
“How are Frannie and John?” you asked with a small smile, curious about her summer with the newlyweds.
“Oh, they’re great,” Eloise gushed, seizing the chance to steer the conversation to safer ground. “They’re enjoying their married life and are very much in love. I spent most of my time as the third wheel, tagging along on their romantic outings.”
“Then you must’ve desperately missed me and my company, huh?” you teased, a playful glint in your eye.
“More than you know,” Eloise replied with a rueful smile. “It was a lovely time, but I longed for intelligent conversations and witty banter. No one could provide that like you do.”
“Glad to hear you believe me to be intelligent,” you responded with a grin.
Eloise laughed, the sound light and genuine. “Of course I do. You always know how to keep things interesting. Without you, I felt like I was missing a piece of myself. Francesca and John are great, but there’s no substitute for our deep talks and your sharp wit. You’re one of the smartest people I know, I do not know why you do not believe it yourself.”
“You flatter me, El,” you blushed, the warmth in your cheeks matching the softness in your eyes.
“I only speak the truth,” Eloise replied, a soft smile playing on her lips. Hearing the familiar nickname come from your lips specifically, made her heart flutter, bringing back a flood of cherished memories between you two.
“Thank you,” you smiled, the sincerity in your eyes unmistakable. “You’re the most intelligent person I know.”
Eloise’s heart skipped a beat at your words. She knew she might be reading too much into it, but the feeling of being praised by you made her giddy. “Even more than Elizabeth?” she asked, her voice tinged with a mixture of curiosity, hope and that familiar feeling of jealousy.
You tilted your head with an arched eyebrow. “I take it you still are not fond of her?”
Eloise’s expression soured. “No,” she said bluntly. “I still do not think she is worthy of you.” She crossed her arms defiantly, her jealousy flaring up again.
“Please, I do not wish to argue about her again. I like her, Eloise. She is kind, caring, funny and pretty. She cares for me.”
Eloise felt her heart ache with each word you spoke about Elizabeth. She knew she had no right to feel this way, but she couldn’t help it. “Perhaps she is all those things, but I still do not trust her,” she said, stubbornly clinging to her view of Elizabeth.
You got up from your seat on the couch and stepped towards Eloise, looking down at her. “And why is it that you feel this way?”
Eloise looked up at you, feeling flustered at how close you suddenly were. “I just… I have a feeling that Elizabeth is not as genuine as she appears. I do not trust her to truly care for you. You are naive and too kind for your own good.”
You raised an eyebrow, a hint of challenge in your gaze. “If I’m so naive, do you truly believe I wouldn’t know that there is more to the way you are acting, Eloise?”
Eloise’s eyes widened at your comment, her heart racing. She knew you were aware of her true motives now. “I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she stammered, averting her gaze, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks.
You gently lifted her chin, forcing her to meet your eyes. “Eloise, we’ve been friends for too long for you to hide your feelings from me. I always thought you to be honest, yet right now you are not being honest with me.”
Eloise was torn. She wanted to be honest with you, but admitting the truth would reveal the depth of her feelings. Fear and uncertainty gripped her. “Please don’t do this…” she pleaded softly, her voice trembling.
You sat down next to Eloise, your proximity close enough that she could feel the warmth of your body. “I don’t understand,” you said, your tone gentle yet firm.
Eloise’s heart pounded in her chest, the proximity of your bodies making her feel both nervous and excited. She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before speaking. “I… I was jealous. I didn’t want to lose you. And I’m sorry but I don’t want you to spend time with her,” she blurted out, unable to keep the truth hidden any longer.
“What?” you asked breathlessly. “You know you’d never lose me, El…. We are best friends.”
“I know,” Eloise said, frustration evident in her voice. “But when you started spending more time with her, it made me realize… I don’t want you to spend time with anyone else. I want all your time to be mine.” Her words dripped with possessiveness and longing, her true feelings laid bare.
“Eloise…” you trailed off, your eyes searching hers. You looked directly into Eloise’s bright blue eyes, a mix of confusion and realization dawning on your face. “What are you implying?”
Eloise swallowed nervously, her heart racing as she met your gaze. She couldn’t back out now. Taking a deep breath, she spoke up, her voice trembling with emotion. “I… I think, no. I know that I’m in love with you. I have been for a long time. I know it’s a sin, us being women, but I cannot help how I feel.”
Your breath hitched in your throat at the revelation, and your hand came up to cup Eloise’s cheek. “Oh, Eloise,” you mumbled, gazing at her lovingly.
Eloise’s heart skipped a beat at your touch, a wave of emotion washing over her. “Please don’t hate me,” she pleaded softly, her eyes searching your face for any sign of rejection.
“I could never hate you, Eloise,” you whispered, your voice thick with emotion. “Because… I love you too.”
Eloise’s eyes widened in surprise and relief, her breath catching in her throat. “W-what?”
“I’ve loved you for so long that I don’t know who I’d be now if I didn’t,” you added in a whisper, your thumb gently grazing Eloise’s cheek. The tenderness in your touch made her heart swell with hope and happiness.
Eloise’s heart nearly leaped out of her chest at your words. “You… you truly love me too?” she whispered in disbelief, her eyes wide with hope and joy. She reached up to cover your hand with her own, holding it against her cheek as if to anchor herself, grounding herself in the reality of the moment.
“Eloise, I have loved you ever since I first laid eyes on you. How did you not ever see it?”
Eloise felt a mixture of surprise and regret wash over her. She had been so focused on hiding her own feelings that she had missed the hints you had given. “I… I don’t know,” she admitted, a touch of shame in her voice. “I was so blind, focusing on everything else but the truth right in front of me. Why did you never tell me?”
Your voice trembled as you responded, the vulnerability raw in your words. “I couldn’t… I did not want to ruin our friendship. I feared the rejection, the possibility of losing you entirely.”
Eloise’s eyes filled with tears, the depth of your emotions breaking her heart and mending it at the same time. “I’m so sorry. I should have seen it. I should have known,” she said, her voice cracking. “But now, knowing that you feel the same, it changes everything.”
You nodded, your own eyes misting with tears.
Eloise’s heart ached at the thought of wasting so much time because they had both been too scared to speak up. “We’ve been so foolish!” she exclaimed, a grin spreading across her face, a mixture of frustration and joy in her voice. “All this time, we could have been together…”
Eloise’s voice trailed off, her mind reeling with the lost moments and missed opportunities. The weight of unspoken feelings and hidden glances felt like a heavy burden now lifted.
You gently took her hands in yours, your eyes locking onto hers with a deep, unwavering intensity. “Let’s not dwell on the past,” you said softly but firmly. “What’s important is the present and the future we can have together. I love you, Eloise Bridgerton, and that is all that matters now.”
“And I love you… I love you more than anything in this world,” Eloise spoke softly, her misty blue eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that made your heart race.
“Even more than your books?” you teased, a soft smile playing on your lips as you leaned in closer to her.
“Even more than my books,” Eloise affirmed, a grin spreading across her face. “No book could ever compare to you.” She reached up and gently ran her fingers through your hair, the touch sending shivers down your spine.
“Then you must truly love me,” you grinned goofily, trying to lighten the heavy emotion hanging in the air.
Eloise let out a breathless chuckle, her eyes glittering with affection and unshed tears. “I do,” she whispered, her voice trembling with sincerity. “I love you… I am so, so utterly in love with you.” She leaned in closer, your faces now just inches apart.
The world around you seemed to fade away as Eloise’s confession sank in, filling your heart with a warmth you had never known. “Eloise,” you murmured, your voice thick with emotion. “I’ve dreamed of hearing those words from you for so long. I love you more than I can ever express.”
Eloise’s eyes welled up with tears, but she held your gaze. She moved even closer, her breath intermingling with yours. Pressing her forehead against yours, your noses touched lightly as her eyes fluttered shut.
Time seemed to stand still as you savored each other’s presence. Your noses gently brushed against one another, a tender and affectionate touch that conveyed more than words ever could. You could feel the warmth of her breath, the softness of her skin, and the quiet intensity of her heartbeat. Each second stretched into eternity as you cherished the moment.
“Then show me,” Eloise finally whispered, her voice barely audible but carrying the weight of all her hopes and dreams. “Show me how much you love me.”
You tilted your head slightly, and as if drawn by an invisible force, your lips met hers in a sweet, heartfelt kiss. It was a kiss filled with unspoken promises and deep affection, a kiss that spoke of your shared past and the future you dreamed of together. Eloise’s lips were soft and warm, moving gently against yours in a perfect, loving rhythm. The world outside ceased to exist; all that mattered was this moment, this connection, this bond between you two.
When you finally pulled away, both of you were breathless, your foreheads resting against each other once more. Her eyes fluttered open, sparkling with joy and love. “Now that,” she whispered, her smile positively radiant, “was better than any book.”

————
You were a rookie cop, still finding your way around the precinct. You had seen Jill many times but had never mustered the courage to talk to her. Every time you were in the same room, you couldn’t help but stare, hoping she didn’t notice. Jill was strikingly beautiful, and you found it impossible to look away.
Unbeknownst to you, Jill had noticed your glances. She brushed them off as mere admiration, not realizing you had a crush on her. Each time she caught you staring, she smirked inwardly, wondering if she should address it one day.
Tonight, the precinct was nearly deserted. Only you, Jill, and Derek, a younger officer who had taken a liking to you, remained. Despite your polite rejections, Derek persisted, misinterpreting your kindness for something more.
Derek believed you were alone, unaware that Jill was finishing her paperwork in the S.T.A.R.S. office nearby.
“C’mon, just give me a chance. Please!” Derek pleaded suddenly, his voice desperate.
“Derek… I’m sorry, but I’m just not interested,” you replied, trying to remain calm.
Derek’s demeanor shifted. He glanced around to ensure no one else was nearby before grabbing your arm roughly. “I’m sick of women like you,” he snarled. “Giving me so many damn mixed signals!”
“Derek, what the fuck? Let go of me!” you yelled, struggling against his grip.
Hearing the commotion, Jill got up and walked towards the source of the noise. As she approached, she saw Derek holding your arm, his face twisted in anger.
Jill’s presence made Derek freeze. He looked towards her, his face turning pale.
“Is there a problem here?” Jill asked, her voice cold and commanding.
Your eyes met Jill’s, pleading for help. “Ma’am, he won’t leave me alone. He keeps harassing me,” you said, trying to keep your voice steady despite your racing heart.
“N-no! I wasn’t,” Derek stammered, abruptly releasing your arm.
Jill’s gaze shifted to Derek, her eyes narrowing. “Is that true? Have you been harassing her?” she asked, her tone icy.
“N-no, Miss Valentine,” Derek said, his voice trembling.
Jill didn’t believe him. Her eyes flashed with a mix of irritation and protectiveness. “I don’t believe you,” she said, crossing her arms. “Apologize to her and leave her alone from now on. Understand?”
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled, then quickly added in a small voice, “I-I won’t lose my job?”
Jill’s expression hardened. “No, you won’t. But if I hear another word about you harassing her or anyone else, your job will be the least of your worries. Got it?”
Derek nodded, his hands shaking as he quickly left the office.
Jill watched him leave, her expression still stern. She turned to you, her features softening. “Are you okay?” she asked, stepping closer and gently touching your arm where Derek had grabbed you.
Your face flushed at the contact. "Y-yeah. He’s been trying to get me to go out with him. He just kind of snapped tonight after I rejected him yet again.”
Jill’s expression softened as she listened. “That’s unacceptable behavior,” she said, her voice serious yet laced with concern. “He shouldn’t be treating you that way, no matter how many times you reject him.”
“Yeah… and people wonder why I don’t like men,” you mumbled.
Jill chuckled, a faint smile crossing her lips. “Glad I’m not the only one,” she replied, her tone slightly playful.
Your face flushed a deeper shade of red. “O-oh, really? I didn’t think you…” you trailed off, feeling flustered.
Jill smirked, clearly amused by your reaction. “But now I’m wondering… is that why you keep stealing glances at me when you think I’m not looking?”
You tensed up at the question. “Uh, what do you mean?”
Jill chuckled again, clearly enjoying how flustered you were. “I’ve noticed you looking at me,” she said, her tone playful yet serious. “You’re not very subtle.”
“Sorry… I didn’t mean to stare. It’s just…”
Jill’s smirk softened into a small smile. “Just what?” she asked, her voice gentle and encouraging. “Go on, I’d like to hear what you have to say.”
“…You’re very beautiful,” you whispered, your eyes not meeting Jill’s.
Jill’s expression shifted, a hint of surprise crossing her features at your compliment. She had always been aware of her own attractiveness, but hearing it come from someone else, especially you, sent a flutter through her heart.
She tilted her head slightly, studying your nervous expression. “You think so?” she asked, her tone softer than before.
“Absolutely,” you said with a quick nod, still refusing to meet Jill’s eyes.
Jill studied you intently, her gaze softening. “You don’t have to be so nervous around me,” she said gently, a warm smile on her lips. “I don’t bite. Unless you want me to.”
Your cheeks flushed even deeper at her teasing remark, unsure how to respond to the mix of playful banter and genuine interest in her eyes. You took a deep breath, trying to steady your racing heart. “Sorry… I, uh, didn’t think you’d be interested.”
Jill’s smile softened, her eyes watching you intently. “And why’s that?” she asked, her tone teasing yet sincere. “You don’t think I’d be interested in a gorgeous woman who keeps staring at me?”
“I didn’t know you liked girls…” you admitted softly, feeling a bit awkward.
Jill raised an eyebrow, her smirk turning into a warm smile. “Well, let me assure you, I do. And I have eyes, you know. I notice when someone’s attractive. And you…” Her voice trailed off slightly, her gaze lingering on your features. “You’re very attractive.”
“Thank you, uh, ma’am…” you said, cringing at your awkward choice of words.
Jill chuckled again, noticing your cringe. “You don’t have to call me ‘ma’am’,” she said, her tone gently scolding. “In fact, you don’t have to be so formal with me at all.”
“Sorry, I was told to be respectful towards my superiors.”
Jill smiled, leaning against the desk next to you and crossing her arms. “Oh, sweet girl, you can drop the formal ‘superior’ act when we’re alone,” she said, her voice soft but playful. “We’re just two women talking here. No need for formality.”
“Alright, cool,” you replied quietly.
Jill’s smile deepened as you finally looked up and met her gaze. Your eyes were captivating, and Jill found herself unable to look away from them.
“There you go,” she said softly. “Much better. Now we can actually talk instead of you trying to melt into a puddle on the floor.”
You managed a shy smile, feeling a bit more comfortable in her presence. “Thanks for stepping in to save me from Derek,” you said, shuddering involuntarily as you mentioned his name.
Jill’s expression turned serious again, a hint of protective fierceness in her eyes. “No need to thank me,” she said firmly. “That guy was being a total creep. I couldn’t just stand by and let him keep harassing you.”
Gratitude swelled within you as you looked at Jill, admiring her strength and integrity. “Something tells me I have a better shot at scoring a date with you than him, anyway,” she added teasingly, her eyes locking onto yours with a mischievous glint.
Your cheeks warmed at her playful comment, but you nodded shyly in agreement. “Definitely.”
Jill laughed softly, the sound warm and melodious, and a small smile played on her lips. “We can discuss the details tomorrow, sweetheart. It’s getting late.”
She leaned forward, her breath ghosting over your skin, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to your cheek. The warmth of her lips sent a shiver down your spine, and you felt your heart nearly burst out of your chest at the contact. Your face grew warm as you watched her saunter away, her confident stride and the way she glanced back at you with a playful smile making your stomach flutter.
“Goodnight, rookie,” she called over her shoulder, her voice filled with a mixture of affection and teasing.
You stood there for a moment, stunned by what had just happened. Jill Valentine, the strong and beautiful officer you admired greatly, had just kissed your cheek and hinted at a future date. The reality of it all was almost too much to comprehend.
