in tandem with my previous postĀ  Ā  —  Ā  ella did NOT want plans for the isle to go through. she’s a character that is full of love and care, through and through. in all adaptations of her story, she chose to forgive. she forgave her step-mother and her step-sisters. her entire arc was about choosing kindness. and this doesn’t change in desc verse at all ( and i like to think i have free rein with this bc there are no canon desc. references to her, really ). during auradon’s formation and the uniting of the kingdoms, there was saturated fear and paranoia about the villains, propaganda made from all sourcesĀ  Ā  —  Ā  the villains had ruined their lives, hurt them, abused them, took people from them. how to keep these families and their future children safe? it took but one suggestion for most people to agree : the isle. a place to keep the villains separated and away. meaning their world would be away from any potential danger threats.
but ella hated the idea of imprisoning people, of bringing them back from the dead. it went against every one of her values and her morals and she felt it was wrong, unjust, and inhumane. being one of the prominent rulers of this newly formed auradon, she had a voice and she used it. every single meeting, she spoke out against its creation. however, she was with child and her unborn baby was used as leverage against herĀ  Ā  —  Ā  could she live peacefully in a world where danger always lurked, where these powerful villains could take everything away in an instant? it came down to the villains or the safety of her children. and when put in that position, she chose safety of her children, vowing to never let them grow up in a world where they couldn’t be safe.Ā
the gif at the top is so important because that’s how i see her having this very conversation with her husband, being so torn about it and upset, unhappy with the decisions she’s being forced to make, and the new world she’s now forced to adapt to.
so, for ella, what got her through it was convincing herself that it was for her baby, that it was for the safety of all future children in auradonĀ  Ā  —  Ā  not yet considering the very real fact that children would be born on the isle, as well. and as the years went by, she grew comfortable in auradon’s bubble. because of her upbringing, she grew up become a prominent figure in auradon, a major philanthropist. she’s founded and funded numerous charities and foundations, focusing on the lives of children, determined to ensure none of them would live the same life she did.Ā
even after learning that there were children on the isle, she remained out-numberedĀ  Ā  —  Ā  auradon had enough of its issues ( sidekick mistreatment, lack of rights for sentient animals, just to name a few from the long, long list of everything wrong with auradon ) that it couldn’t just drop it all and focus on the isle. so she told herselfĀ  Ā  —  Ā  after things in auradon were fixed, they would help the children of the isle. but it never happened all those years. until ben.

#so when all canon source material for desc.'s universe shows that the 'heroes' ended up being narcissists or mean or bad or neglectful .....#don't remove that.#desc isn't the universe for you if you're not comfortable with that???#a lot of these aks and vks's stories heavily depend on their parents#and in THIS world. most of the parents are difficult. for lack of a better word#like. think about it. if every single royal were to be against beast. why didn't they stop the isle?#bc they didn't or not enough of them tried hard enough#it's even canon that most of the aks have strained relationships with their parents#politics is MESSY and brutal and ruthless. and every single one of these royals are involved w politics#auradon aint perfect
desc. is a universe where the classic ā€œheroesā€ are a lot more complex and messier and darker - it’s different from the original lore and it does drastically change how a number of beloved characters act and think. ak parents can be just as neglecting ( whether it’s intentional or not is circumstantial ), it’s just hidden behind closed doors as most of what the public sees is purely a story to make thisĀ ā€œperfectā€ world really seem perfect and pristine, and that these families are all happy and sunshine and rainbows. auradon has a secret and it’s that it’s really not a happy place full of happy people, just an illusion of one. if everyone in auradon was as good as their original lore, the isle wouldn’t have been created. the isle was created because enough of these royals grouped together and made a decision. good people can do bad things. good people can do bad things out of fear and misguided paths to justice. and nobody in auradon is exempt from this.

everyone: "gaston is better than ad--" you: I THINK NOT (btw i love your takes on adam, people love using him as an easy scapegoat, it's refreshing to see your posts.)
oop - hghdlskfdkslfjsl yeah it’s a little annoying and it doesn’t take a lot of brain power to understand the situation is more complicated than it is !!Ā Ā  like characters feeling that way? valid and justified. us, as writers, being narrow-minded and refusing to see a bigger picture? ehhhhh. like adam was still a bad dude for what he didĀ !!!!Ā  Ā he did a vvv fucked up thing and he should be perceived as a villain but he’s not the ultimate villain and still isn’t nearly as bad as the actual villains, bc what he did ( with the support of literally everyone ) will never amount to the things the villains have already done. i think it’s just easier for ppl to collectively hate on him bc it’s easier to pin the blame on one singular source for plot purposes than to think bigger than that ??Ā  but thank u for this !!!!!!Ā  Ā i’m glad i’m not the only one /:

anyways adam was king of a small population similar to the size of just a village ( and didn’t even rule it for many, many years since he and his staff/guests were cursed ), he wasn’t omnipotent by any means. getting elected high king required a majority vote from other royals/rulers that now make up the regions of auradon, and he couldn’t have possibly been aware of every single villain from every single person’s story aside from his own. his fear and his rage wasn’t his alone. and the creation of the isle could have been dealt with sooner if the other rulers spoken up and overpowered him. but they didn’t. it wasn’t one man behind the creation of the isle, it was many, many other figures who played a hand in it, whether they contributed or did nothing to stop it.Ā
