Calpurnia
I don’t know if I could admit it but, Calpurnia served as a mother-figure to me. I never really know what a mother feels like but from what Calpurnia does for me I could see her fitting that role. She teaches me and cares for me and keeps the house clean. She is a friend to everyone in the family. Because Atticus is unmarried right now and the Tom Robinson case and all he relies on Calpurnia to take care of me and Jem when he is gone. Isn’t that the same thing a mother would have done? She prepares our meals, punishes me (not Jem for some odd reason) when she says I’m out of line. She gives life lessons and advice. She treats and love Jem as if we were her own and we lover her too. I have never known life without Calpurnia. I share strong memories with her good or bad. With all this can I say that Calpurnia serves as a mother figure in my life that I thought was actually non existent.

Imma kill Francis.
I always hated Francis. Always. Francis is this annoying little tattletale that shouldn’t even be related to me. I’m surprised that we even are, I mean look at him and the way his boring little self acts compared to me. How do we have the same blood, we are nothing alike! But, what he did drew the line. It was bad before, tolerable, but still bad. Man but what he said about Atticus was unforgivable. I don’t care if he is older than me he needed to know I wasn’t going to just take that. He goes on to call Atticus a ****** lover. Yes, he said that about Atticus, can you believe it. I couldn’t let this slide so to retaliated by fighting him Uncle Jack sees us and stops it punishing me. Blaming me which is so unfair. But, I then talk to Uncle Jack later telling him what really happened. He believed me learning next time he should take two sides os a story instead of one and assuming.

Syrup, he pours syrup on rice... oh lord
Let me start from the beginning so it could all make sense. So, my first day of school, see that Walter Jr. her classmate tries to defend himself when Miss Caroline tries to question him on why he has no lunch money. I end up getting in trouble and was sent to sit in the corner! So when I saw him during lunch I gave him a beating for obvious reasons until Jem breaks up the beating I was giving Walter. For one odd reason he invites Walter for dinner which I knew if I tried to argue I wouldn’t win. When at dinner for some odd reason Walter starts to pour syrup all over his rice. Normally, I spazzed out on him thinking that he was crazy and thinking how dirty that was. Calpurnia shut me up real quick and told me to go in the kitchen. After a few hours I go to talk to Atticus about what happened, He says to me,"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."When he said that I understood what he meant. Not only about Walter, but also Miss Caroline to. I don’t understand them and haven’t experienced what they have gone through. So what I might seem as normal may seem as different to them vice versa.

My brother sucks
More and more I am seeing Dill and Jem becoming more an more close. Don’t get me wrong I like Dill but I don’t like how Dill and Jem, my brother, spend more attention to each other than to me. It seems as if I’m not apart of the group anymore. And when I complain or ask to play Jem always responds like, “Stop being a girl”, girl this and girl that. I think Jem just thinks that he needs to hang out with boys his age I guess. but, that still doesn't make it right that he needs to make fun of me or try to drive me away overtime I want to play. Ever since they grew more distant from me I’ve been hanging with Ms. Maudie more. I grew to like Ms. Maudie more than before and grew a deep connection with her.

Mother
I never met my mom. I was told that mother passed away from a sudden heart attack when I was two years old. I don’t remember her mother much and Jem and Atticus don’t really bring her up much. I am aware though of the fact that Jem misses her. I’ve heard from Mrs. Dubose that she was a lovely lady and hear from Jem that she is beautiful. Mrs. Dubose says that it’s a shame that Atticus won’t remarry. I wonder why he won’t remarry anyway. I would rather have some type of mother than Aunt Alexandrea. Anyway, I was two when she died as I said before so I really don’t feel her presence. Should I be able to murn the lost of my mother? Is it inconsiderate of me not to since Jem feeles the lost of her while I don’t? I just don’t know.

Atticus is actually...cool
Today in Maycomb something out of the ordinary happened. Well to really start off what happened I have to explain something, my fathers sort of a lame. I mean he is cool and all being a lawyer but what else. More times than not Atticus is older compared to the other fathers in Maycomb. To make matters even worse he wears glasses and reads which is so uncool. He doesn't even have any special skills or hidden talents that interest me. To put it bluntly he’s just boring. That was until I saw one day, however, a mad dog appears wandering down our street. Calpurnia calls Atticus, coming back home with the sheriff. Sheriff brings a rifle and asks Atticus to shoot the animal. I wondered why a lame like my father would be asked to shoot. I thought that he hadn’t even held a gun before. To me and Jem’s amazement Atticus hits the dog with his first shot despite how far he is from the mad dog. Later, Miss Maudie tells me and Jem that as a young man, Atticus was the best shot in the county—“One-shot Finch.” I was eager to brag about this, but Jem tells me to keep it a secret, because if Atticus wanted them to know, he would have told us.

DEJ Quote:“Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.”
Background needed to understand this quote is that in “To Kill a Mockingbird” recovering morphine addict Mrs.Dubose was fighting for her life to recover. To assist her in her, Atticus gave Jem a punishment where  he hes to read to Mrs.Dubose for destroying her flowers. It’s important to realize that Mrs.Dubose chances of survival were very low and wasn’t expected to live. However, she decided to keep on fighting despite the odds. What this quote is stating is that even when circumstances are low you should keep fighting to win. This resonates with Mrs.Dubose because when the odds were stacked against her she still decided not to give up. This connects to the thematic parts of the text because throughout the whole book we see how Atticus knows that he won’t win the case of Tom Robinson but still tries.

When looking at what happened to Bob Ewell I could say that I was scared and confused of what happened. What I mean by that is one second I’m walking down the street, than running away from something, than tussling on the floor with a complete stranger. I was scared because I wasn’t sure on where Jem was and if he was even safe. When everything was cooled down and began to make more sense I finally understood what happened. It was Bob Ewell who was trailing me and Jem not one of my stupid classmates. From what I could make sense of from what Atticus and the Sheriff is that Bob wanted to hurt me and Jem. And the stranger who saved me was “Boo” Radley. At first when I saw him I was confused and unsure of who the stranger was. But looking at his feature I could see it was a person who did not go outside in years.

I just don’t understand why people could be so hateful.I just don’t understand why people could just hold so much hate for people to the point where it’s not fair anymore. The verdict that Tom Robinson got was guilty. When I was told this I had no idea what to do. I cried but, I made sure Jem wouldn’t see me because I didn’t want him calling me being a “girl” and all if he saw. I had hopes that the verdict would be not guilty because all the evidence that Atticus used to prove Tom Robinson not guilty seemed like everything would be OK. However, the way everyone that was against Tom Robinson used such hateful tone and words towards just because of the way he looks. That right there I knew that there why I startes to begin to doubt

Article 2
https://www.essence.com/news/colorado-black-teen-racially-profiled-channing-cowan/
What this article is about is how a black teen was conducting an experiment at the mall, asking random people if they could borrow their phones to make a call. This eventually resulted in a white man accused the teen of stealing his wives wallet. When the man accused the teen he grabbed him than excessively searched the teen. Eventually the man was informed his wife left it in the store. How this connects to, “To kill a mockingbird” is when Jem, Scout and Dill went to Boo Radley’s house, Nathan Radley saw their shadows. When seeing their shadows he assumed that it was a black man than shot at them. Both the article and the book show instances of racially profiling.

Article 1
https://www.cnn.com/2017/09/20/health/geas-gender-stereotypes-study/index.html
This article brings the idea of gender roles, more specifically that males have to act a specific way and females have to act a specific way. An article from CNN informs how the idea of this transformed from schools and social media. The article says, “While boys, men described having the freedom to come and go as they pleased to pursue education and other opportunities, girls found their mobility and access to education restricted” What this shows is the roles and jobs in society that men are preset to have compared to women. How this connects to, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is how throughout the book aunt Alexandra tires to make Scout behave like a “girl” because of Scout’s tomboy traits.
