Okay sooo I aaayyyy have mentioned this before. But Minsiter Bastion is heavily inspired by Frollo and, seeing as he is my favorite Disney villain of all time. Not to mention, The Hunchback or Notredame soundtrack has been my go-to for writing AYCF.

So once again, my friend @thatbloodstainfromcaleb blew my mind with this absolutely amazing screenshot redraw of Minister Bastion as Frollo.

Like I'm kicking my feet and screaming over this!!! Aahhhhhhhh it's so cool!!!!

I did a super little rough animatic I finished last night featuring our main characters. The lyrics aren't literal to their story,but the theme of this part fits a certain scene in the novel that is a pivotal moment for Frederick.

how did mr mansell and minister baston meet?

Hello Anon!!!! I am so happy you asked me this question! So I would give a simple answer: Instead, here is a snippet of something that I'm working on that answers that question. Both Minster Bastion and Mr. Mansell are around 7 years old.

Rain poured down from the sky as young Frederick Mansell pushed open the doors to the Meetinghouse to escape the rain. He had another argument with the woman he was now living with after the unfortunate passing of his mother, and he didn't know who his father was. He should be thankful that someone was willing to take him in, seeing as what occupation his mother had. As he opened the doors, he noticed how peaceful the meetinghouse was when no one was around. He knew he shouldn't probably be here without a reason, so he called out.

“Hello? I’m sorry if I am intruding, but it’s raining, and I wanted to stay here until the rain clears.” He started walking closer to the front and ran his hand along the pews and boxes when he suddenly heard a voice behind him.

“Boo!”

“Ahh!” Frederick let out a yelp. Startled by the loud noise, he fell to the ground. He looked up when he heard a laugh and saw a boy around his age standing there, with dark black hair and near onyx-colored eyes.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you.” the boy said, offering his hand.

“It’s okay. I just wasn't expecting anyone, that's all.” Frederick said, taking it. “Wait, you're the son of the Minister, aren’t you.”

“Yes, I am! I don't think we have met. My name is Richard, Richard Bastion, and who are you?” Richard said, smiling.

“Oh, uhh, I’m Frederick, Frederick Mansell.”

“Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Frederick."

So I went down the rabbit hole of Stage Adaptations of the Hunchback of Notredame, and I discovered a French original musical, that is pretty 1 for 1 with the book.

And there is this song called "Tu Vas Me Dètruire" and thematically it's this musical's version of "Hell fire"

And some of the English lyrics kinda fit with Minister Bastions' thoughts and feelings about his feelings for Mr. Mansell, when they were younger( around their early 20's)

So I had to draw something to it.

An Ember in the Twilight: An Original Novel by @azure-blaze92

An Ember in the Twilight follows the lives of two childhood best friends, Richard Bastion and Frederick Mansell. One is the son of their town's Minister, and the other is an orphan bound to the latter's father, living in colonial New England during the 1600's.

As they grow up, Frederick realizes his feelings for Richard go beyond friendship, and unbeknownst to him, Richard feels the same. Yet, even though he tries to deny it. There is just something about Frederick that draws Richard towards him.

But as the years go on, their friendship is tested time and time again, and Frederick slowly watches his best friend fall further and further into the darkness of his own power and corruption. And despite the horrendous actions Richard takes, a small part of him still holds on to that love—like an ember in the twilight.

If you know me from my main Tumblr, you will recognize them from A Young Candles Flame. Thanks to my friends, their headcanons, and our unhinged voice chats, these two OCs have become very near and dear to my heart, inspiring me to turn their backstory into a full original novel.
