I've been planning this illustration for over a month now - in April, I had the patreon folks vote on a theme for a big gravity falls print, and camping was the winner. Even just planning the general composition took a while, figuring out where I wanted all the characters to be. Once I shored up a good thumbnail, I made it tighter twice before putting it on paper, and working in pencil. The pencil drawing part took me four sit down sessions of drawing, and then coloring the scan took another couple of days. I worked SO DANG HARD to finish this monster before mc3, and by some miracle, I did.

Overall, I'm really happy with how this illustration turned out! I feel like it does a good job of expressing my love for the show. I'm really glad people were enthusiastic about it at the convention - I had a lot stop and look at it with these really awestruck, sad wet goo goo eyes expressions LOL! They did this: 🥺 with an actual human face dskjhlsdfkjh!!

crazy that gravity falls was like, hey what if we made twin brothers, and one of them is the worse one. he gets bad grades, he likes to punch his problems, everyone thinks of him as “the other one.” he’s engulfed in a shadow that’s shaped like him. he doesn’t even have his own name—it’s derived of his brother’s name, the only one his parents planned on having and using. everything about him is derivative—imitative of another person (his twin brother) (the one everyone likes and wants) and is disapproved of for that reason (he isn’t just “bad at this thing,” he’s “not as good as his brother”). and then he ruins his brother’s science fair project (the one next to his own—no one noticed it because it’s not good, it’s almost stupid next to a “perpetual motion machine” made by a high schooler) (he tried to fix it) (he doesn’t know how; he’s not as smart as the guy who made it) and he gets kicked out. the potential of the money his twin could’ve made is enough to throw him onto the street, and he can’t go home until he makes that money back (the money that was never gained and therefore was never lost. he never had a chance of making enough). he took every job he could (his brother went to school). he got banned from multiple states (his brother bought a house). he traveled internationally and went to prison and had people try to hunt him down and kill him because he couldn’t make enough money (his brother’s house has three basements. he made them himself, as secure as can be). and when his twin finally summons him for help, things go wrong (he messed up this machine like the last one) (he doesn’t know how to fix it. he isn’t as smart as the guy who made it) (he tries to fix it) (he was never any good at reading and these blueprints are impossible, coded and fragmented and in a science that he didn’t know existed) (he tries to fix it). the townspeople ask who he is, and he doesn’t even say his own name (it was hardly his to begin with). and he invites them to a house that isn’t his to show off experiments that aren’t his because he needs to make money that can’t be his. everything he does for the next 30 years is in his twin’s name, for his twin’s sake. he had two funerals for himself and it isn’t even his body in the casket; he had to wear his brother’s name to both of them. if he had died before he fixed the portal, that funeral wouldn’t have been for him. we meet him as a funny and unique character, but in-universe, he’s only ever been defined by someone else.

and then they went, this is entirely in the background btw. most of that is going to be revealed in one episode and won’t be addressed again. he’s a primary comic relief, even. I’m ill about this.

a long time i characterized my interpretation of the axolotl as bill’s very sweet stepdad who has absolutely no idea how to handle him and is just trying to get him to talk about his emotions instead of just punching the drywall in their living room. and bill is constantly telling his equally shithead friends that his stepdad is so lame and boring and he doesn’t have to follow any of his dumb rules, and once he’s out of the house he’s never talking to the guy again. but then bill mouthes off to the wrong person in a bar and gets his shit absolutely rocked, and frills gets a call at one am from bill, who is sniffling and bleeding in an alley and needs someone to take him to the emergency room, and knew that frills was the only person on earth who would actually come pick him up. anyway i still think this characterization is funny

Trans Dipper HC: Their parents are transphobic but Dipper was introducing himself as a boy from the start and Stan never even thought to question it, so when their parents called asking about their "daughters" he was like "SHIT DID I ALREADY LOSE ONE"

People who headcanon dipper as transmasc are so real, same applies to people who headcanon mabel as transfem, but ive never seen anyone hc both at the same time because of "but the whole POINT is that identical twins can't be different sexes, you can't headcanon BOTH of them as trans" yes I can actually it's called headcanoning them both as intersex and trans'd in opposite directions. Hope this helps.

To be so fucking real, rewatching Gravity Falls as an adult can be so infuriating. I'm sorry Ford and Dipper, but Stan REBUILT THAT PORTAL ALONE, STOP CALLING HIM STUPID EVERY FIVE SECONDS. It urks me so incredibly much in Dungeons, Dungeons and More Dungeons that they both gang up on this man who cares so much and loves his family so much that he worked on a problem for 30 years.

Ford is smart, yes, but he didn't even get back on his own in that time. Stan had remnants of the original plan, no way to find out who "F" was, and no one to talk to about this thing. He got the supplies and some of the info probably in his own conman ways, but that isn't an illegitimate way when the end result is still what he wanted. Ford had someone who was objectively more intelligent than he was to help him build the thing in the first place.

Stan has his flaws, of course. He's stubborn, he's a liar, he's a fool, but he is not foolish! He did not fall for Bill's shit. Ford has all the smarts in the world and is still a total dumbass the moment someone strokes his ego. He betrays McGucket, he falls for Bill's tricks, he puts Dipper and the rest of his family in harm's way, and he betrays STANLEY who was there for him since the beginning because he made a mistake.
